Hi, im relatively new to this forum, but I own a G1S. I’ve read about it, tweaked it and I love it.
In this thread i've tried to compile an overwiev of the most common problems people face with the G1S and solutions smart people found. I can not be held responsible if you use this post as a guide for your notebook/computer/desktop/laptop, this is your own risk at all times.

Below is benchmarks on the difference between having Thermal Monitor enabled or disabled during recharge.

PLUGGED IN RECHARGING FROM 80%, 167.45 driver
Ok here is some results for how the score when the pc is recharging with and without "enabled thermal monitor". The theory is that with the default settings (enabled) the CPU should loose performance compared to when thermal monitor is not enabled while recharging.

BEFORE TEST, same OC as above, 80% battery, RECHARGING


AFTER TEST, charged to 85% battery. *NOTE* CPU SCORE 1702! when it was full battery it scored 2079!


OK Here is the results when Thermal Monitor is DISABLED.

BEFORE TEST, same OC as above, 80% battery, RECHARGING, DISABLED THERMAL MONITOR


AFTER TEST, charged to 83% battery. *NOTE* CPU SCORE 2058! This proves that by disabling the thermal monitor when your battery is recharging the CPU will NOT lose any performance. The battery has also recharged 2% less then when thermal monitor was enabled, this indicates that the CPU has had priority instead of recharging the battery.


So we can conclude for now that you loose an important amount of performance when your battery is below 90% and recharging. The CPU score went from 2079 to 1702 when it was recharging. By Disabling Thermal Monitor it did however climb back up to 2058 CPU score. The battery recharged less and the temperature increased 2-3c. I also want you to notice that the CPU score is THE ONLY score that varies when the laptop was plugged in with full battery and when it was recharging, the other 2 scores where more or less the same! This proves that it is the CPU that loses performance and NOT the GPU when you recharge your notebook.

Its easy. Worst case scenario is you have to use your Asus Recovery CD provided. Follow the steps below.

You WILL off course need XP_Pro product key in order to install this release.

NOTE: Install the chipset and ACPI drivers first

After you have the chipset and ACPI drivers installed and have rebooted, install the audio drivers. Once the audio driver installation is complete, do not reboot. Go to:

Control Panel (Classic View) -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager

In the Device Manager, under "System Devices", select "PCI Device" as shown:

Let Windows automatically install drivers for it. Reboot and your audio will work.

How to fix VgaSave on XP with 3-4gb ram

If u updated ur G1S with 3-4gb ram u propably cant install GPU/VGA drivers cuz XP uses some weird VgaSave driver.
Solution: run everest, on chipset tab find northbridge and southbridge, on one of them at the bottom here are 5 ICH8 Root Ports.
Propably 2 of them are empty but in hardware manager they r using resources and they are causing conflict with GPU/VGA.
Just disable them in Hardware Manager and XP should detect new VGA hardware after restart, now u can easily install your fresh moded drivers for nvidia from laptopvideo2go.com ;]

If you didn't understand that; open up your laptop center panel, remove 1 of the chips with ram. Now you should only have 2 GB left and install will work fine. If this don't work and you didn't understand the above, seek help from Yoda.

Install SP1 this will enable WEI to "see" 4 GB, the pc will still only use 3GB if you go to task manager you can see it max has 3GB.
PAE mode explained below is supposed to work, but ive never managed to get it to work in Vista, maybe its a XP thing... idk... i've given up getting 4gb working on 32.bit system, get 64 bit if you want more then 3GB.

Get Vistax64 and it should work. If not, buy 4 gb, it boosted my laptops performance by 2-300 points compared to other G1S even if it just utilize 3GB.

Run Vista in PAE mode described in link above and it should work with 4GB ram! To enable PAE mode, you have to add PAE to the boot entry in the BCD file. Open an elevated command prompt, hit Windows button + R and type in "cmd". Type BCDEDIT /SET PAE ForceEnable.
I will test this soon.

A 32 bit system can max make ((2^32)-1)= 429.496.725. This is the maximum number of Unique adresses a x32-bit system can make. Every bit in the Ram chip needs one adress. If you look at the number it's just around 4 GB.

On a 64 bit sytem you will however be able to support up to ((2^64)-1)=1844.6744.0737.0955.1615 As you can see from this calculation the x64 got a very big potential for ram and removes all limits the 32bit has. This is as Microsoft say in the Quote;

It also boost security as you can make even more combinations in 64 bit.

If you enable PAE and your computer rebots and can no longer boot windows. Enter safe (F8) mode which disables PAE, type cmd and disable the PAE. I believe it should be the same command, but with one difference BCEDIT /SET PAE Disable (not tested!!)

Underclocking, UC, can be as usefull as the more popular Overclocking, OC. UC will lower the temperature in your laptop, but also perform almost as good as if it was running full voltage.

while testing on the "Settings" page make sure that "Run at Windows Startup" is *not* selected. (This will help if you undervolt too much for your 11x multipler setting, if you do your computer might not start properly).

Then on the "Management" page for the "P-States transitions method" allow it to do direct multi-step transitions. For the "CPU defaults selection" have it do the CPU-defined default FID/VID. I have it so it alerts me if the CPU overheats as well.

Now to the fun part.
I have no idea how other models/laptops work but I can't make my minimum voltage any lower, so I don't even play with that.

For the Max Voltage...

In the "Profiles" page, I have all four drop-down boxes on "Maximal Performance" (you will see why in a second). Now below that is a list of FIDs and VIDs listed. Click the very last one. Then below the list should be a VID Select drop down box. I believe the safest way is to go about 2 or 3 entries lower at a time when testing. (ie: Prime95 or gaming)

Now on the "Maximal Perfomance" page, I have "Use P-State Transitions (PST) check box selected for both AC and Battery. For AC I have the 11x FID selected. For Battery I have the 8x VID selected.
So when Plugged in my processor will either be in a sleep mode, or at full processing power. When on battery, it will either be in sleep mode or 1.6ghz. --This is just how I do it, some people have Perfomance on Demand for battery and have it use different FID settings and the like.

Now for testing. Each time you drop the VID, run Prime95 for a while. Up to you how long, its the same if you overclock. Just make sure it works some people do it 2 hours or whatever, i think thats only necissary once you are undervolting a ton and stuff not at the beginning. If it doesn't crash then go back up to the "Profiles" page and lower the VID some more until you do crash.

Once you find the VID you like, then you can go back to the "Settings" page and have it run at startup. Note for Vista users: If you have UAC on it will ask for permission for you to start at boot-time as well... so depending you might want to turn UAC off.

Lastly, on the "Advanced CPU settings" I have all the enhanced low power states enabled. Depending on what game you might be playing, you might want to disable these. I haven't found it mess with my EQ2 while playing with all of them on however.

I was able to undervolt my G1S .2 volts so far (1.037v from 1.237), which in RMClock is really close to the lowest voltage I can go... I really need to keep playing with it though.

OverClocking/Performance;
I suggest you use nTune for basic options, if you want a more "pro" tool, download RivaTuner. RivaTuner is definitively my favorite. I've OC'd to 580/820 stable clocks with nTune and i scored about 4667 at the time. Today my best score is 5076 with RivaTuner, 544 / 1325/ 826, main difference between the old OC which was higher core then this one is that i have now overclocked the Shader to 1325 which can be done using RivaTuner and scores you many points Of course the fact that i use newer and better drivers now with RivaTuner does give a performance boost. I believe it stresses the GPU less with a 544/1325/826 then then the 580/820 and it does run more stable.

If you want to stick to OC' just the Core/Memory then the highest you can get is about 600/848. This OC was made by Adolfotregosa the first time back when the G1S had just been released, 07-29-2007. At the time he used 165.01 drivers and ran the test in 1280*800, he scored 5278. Compared to 5076 points in 1280*1024 i believe that the OC i made does score better, it shall be said that i used 175.63 drivers which alone gives a nice boost.

I can say already now that the newest 175.63 driver gives 200 points boost and disabling thermal monitor removes the "bugg" where the CPU performance is cut. We have also again proved that the stuttering issue some experience comes from to high temperature on the GPU and not from a bad driver. This because i kept the laptop below the magic 90c where stuttering begins and had no stuttering during any of the tests with any of the drivers. Asus i hate you for making this laptop with so bad cooling.

All test has been run in 1280*1024 with all settings on default in 3dmark06.

First i want to say is that it never went above 85c. The highest i saw was 80. This is with default clocks 475/700 and the 167.45 driver. I will now run it again with overclock. 3907 is btw a good result for a G1S with stock driver / clock.


This is results before and after with OC. I seen the temperature hit 90c with this configuration.

Conclusion on the 167.45 driver
This driver works well and i did not experience any stuttering. However i do have proof that the stuttering issue remains in the 167.45 and the latest 175.63 drivers. Look at the bottom of OC section for the results when the GPU reaches 90c, 95c and the magic 96!

PLUGGED IN FULL BATTERY 175.63 driver
Well i am happy to say that i did get a better score with the new drivers, 100 points better in fact. With the 167.45 driver i got 3907 and now i scored 4075 with default factory settings. The new window in the pictures below is rivatuner, just to show that the driver has been updated.

After the test, compared to 4731 with the 167.45 we now reached 4948!



Stuttering due to High temperatures and its effect
I made this test really simple, i ran AtiTool, overclocked the gpu to 580/820 and had it show me the 3dwiev which forces the GPU to use its maximum potential. The results are very easy to understand as you see the AVG frames rise until the temp hits 95/96 then they decline again. On low temp the avg was 344 frames at max and when the temp got to high it declined to 269. I could never get the temperature above 96c.

At first here you see the frames at 340 AVG and the temperature increasing steadily. At the top it was 344 and 95c.


On the second image here we see the temp when its reached 96/97c and that the AVG frames is starting to decline.


On the third image it is quite clear that it will continue to decline until it reaches lower temp levels.


And on this last image i have reset the AVG counter to show the real-time effect and not the avg from when the test started like the above shows.


Conclusion on the 175.63 driver
This new driver has given my laptop a performance boost of 100 - 300 points depending on when its NormalClocked or OverClocked.
I did also run the OC setting on 1024*768 one time and it gave me 6149 score. This would explain how WEissbr0t managed to get 4739 on default clocks.

Note to all people who wants to run 3dmark06, the results you publish should be in default settings. If not you should notify the readers.

The 175.63 drivers gave a performance boost, but not really what i had hoped for. I had no stuttering issues during any of these tests. The temperature was steady below 90c.

The provided Images of ATItool should prove that stuttering occurs above 95c (at least in my laptop). Earlier its been said that it occurs at 90c, maybe they increased the max temp before it throttles down to 95c in the newest drivers? - i cant answer that one, id have to revert to old drivers and do the test over again and i cant be arsed! Stuttering occurs at approximately 95c. It lowered performance from 344 fps to 269 fps which is a 27% decrease in performance.

For more performance, get a faster HDD. The HDD is fast enough, but I’ve read you can boost the windows startup by 10 seconds if you get 7200 rpm. I don’t mind waiting 10 seconds so I only upgraded the ram.

Remember an easy trick is to use an object to lift the back of the laptop up from the table so you get more air under it. I use a book

If you want the best cooling, open up all the lids and place your G1S on top of the Zalman Notebook Cooler NC 2000. - when i overclock the graph to 580/820 it never goes above 70c at max load! - the built in cooler for the G1S wont even spin up! My idle temp is now about 40c, ive seen the CPU as low as 36c.

For those who thinks drilling is to advanced, just remove the lid, it will cool nicely.

This is how my laptop runs after the extra cooling. Note the CPU is overclocked to almost 2.4 from 2.2. Graph Card can be taken up to 580/780 without any major heat differences. However i do not need it as of today NOTE: after 30 minutes of Crysis, with no problems, i had a ATItool temp (graphic card) 93, and CPU tool 64. This is to me respectable temperatures. I do believe that ATItools temp is not accurate and shows to high temps.

After some time i found the temperature getting higher and higher by each week that passed. I figured i wanted to find the reason to why and not very surprisingly it was a lot of dust in the cooling sink that prevented effective cooling. As i wrote above i was able to run around 93/64c before, that had changed to 100/75 over the weeks, some clean-up and replacing the cooling paste on the CPU did the trick and im now back to 90/65 load temp when overclocked to 2.4ghz and 540/745
Every once in a while you should remove this silver tape and clean out the dust inside of it.
My system idle temp is currently 45 and 44 c. Core Temp Beta.

great post... thanks for the info. I've been toying with the idea of loading XP on mine. I didn't have a great experience with vista while trying to load some apps. After 4th attempt it's purring like a cat.

 

The two best that I know of are Nod32 (by Esset) and Kaperski (sp?). I personally use Nod32 and think it's great. The setup is (i.e. tweaking for optimal protection ) a little time consuming but there is an excellent guide here that you follow step by step http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=131758

Well, I use McAffe, but that's just because I get a free copy of the software and license from my school. I've heard of some good freeware programs, but their names escape me right now.

As far as a "grainy screen," It's also called a silk wash. It's a common problem among the glossy screens. My roommate's HDTV has a similar issue. Basically, when there is a solid colored area, there is some mild pixellation. It's hard to explain, but once you've seen it you know. It's not really a problem except for a minor annoyance on really plain webpages and such. During gaming, movies, etc that have varying colors and moving objects, it's not noticeable.

 

Great post Irathi. I for one will use this when I get mine. Just a suggestion...perhaps modify your original post to include the latest drivers that should be installed into the system (i.e. video, bios, sound). That would be very beneficial.

I would love to, but unfortunately I'm out of town right now and can't get a pic of the TV. Plus, I don't know how well it would come out on pictures. Also, if the G1s screen is like my roomie's TV, it's so faint that you don't even really notice it unless you're looking for it.

Note: I don't own a G1s, but I've been shopping for one for a bit. If I had one, I could probably be more specific.

 

This is good information - thanks for posting it. It's a quick start guide for new owners for basic problems.
It's also important to note that not all users are going to install XP. I for one, am not. I'm waiting out Vista, using this notebook primarily for school until the first SP comes out hopefully in the fall. OKay, some games but only ones that are known to run smooth on Vista. 3rd party developers need time to get patches and drivers out there too. I'll use my desktop for the high performance needs till then.
My main concern is a stable running laptop while I explore Vista's capabilities.

For the silkscreen effect, its on alot of high resolution screens from what I can tell.. the G1S has it and the 1080x1050 option of the Dell Inspiron 1520 has it, not sure what other ones do...
Also, for the rest of you... is there a dissassembly guide out for the G1S?

 

For AV i suggest NOD32. This is the best anti virus. It takes little ram and CPU and it searches faster then any other. In test NOD32 had 95,5% chance of sucess since v1.0, Norton Antivirus had 92%. NortonAV however takes a lot more CPU to run. AVG free got LAST on the list, thats the FREE version, i'm not sure about the payed one. AVG them self say that the FREE version should protect against virus as well as payed. I've researched this and AVG can go to bed - NOD32 > AVG

NOD32 is a good buy, i own it.

hey i just got my asus g1s today, i didnt run it yet lol...but i got a chance to open it and and check it out it looks amazing. Ill be turning it on tomorrow, but i was going to install an antivirus and a firewall first, then my microsoft office 2007. I use Avast antivirus and Zonealarm both free, i was wondering if anyone else likes these programs as well. Because i see everyone talking about Nod32, but you have to pay for that.

 

Yes. G1s has an Express slot.

I am using AVG free version and it is OK.

You can use the laptop safely without installing antivir and firewall immediately, it already has an antivir installed, and I think Vista has an integrated firewall which is enabled by default.

 

I really like ZoneAlarm, used it forever it seems. AVG is okay.. I use EZtrust AV and like it better though.

 

As I mentioned earlier I highly recommend NOD32. It does not take up a lot of system resources.

For computer protection here is what I use:
NOD32
Zonealarm
Spyware Blaster
AdAware
Spybot
Firefox

Plus a few great simple fixes from grc.com. If you haven't already, use their shields up test to make sure your firewall is completely protecting your computer/laptop

 

From what I've seen online ESSET NOD32(paid) > Avast!(free) > AVG(free).

 

nod32 is like a porsche, small and fast, you can catch most "threats/viruses", advanced heuristics, core written in assembler, great stuff, numerous rewards, Kaspersky is more like a Hummer, big and slow ... but in the end ... nothing escapes. Either this or that, great choice.

Now for the post itslelf, this is one of the most usefull posts about G1S. Thanks for this.

I m going to buy the G2S-A2, so I m really interested in potentional problems. Every system has its flaws when new, this one seems to be getting mature. I wonder if anyone tried Linux on G1S/G2S......

I might do it, depending on how little work i have at my job and how bored i am. I made the G1S because i own a G1S, I won't guarantee il do it for the G2S, but i might. Also i feel i might not have the background to do one on the G2S since i don't own one and can't test things out my self. I would have to quote information others posted.

NOD32 is best as described, but you must pay for it . ~boho~ .
Norton AV with firewall is pre-installed with 90 days subscription. This program works and is in my opinion top 5 AV. Only major problem is how slow it searches and how much CPU/MEM it consumes. It can be customized to consume less CPU/MEM by turning off automaticly scan files etc etc. If you aint upgrading to NOD32 then don't uninstall Norton AV as this will protect you very good, just a bit slow.

NOTE!!
If you decide to install a new AV-program, FIRST UNINSTALL THE OLD PROGRAM! - Unplugg from wall or wireless so you're not exposed to virus - INSTALL NEW PROGRAM AFTER RESTART!

Agreed. Doesnt look like it will be a problem. I think you will be the first to put this card into the G1S so keep us updated if you encounter problems!

You should cancel your order ASAP. The G1S does not take the Audigy ZS because that is using the PCMCIA slot that the G1S does not have.

At least to my knowledge. Please verify that you can indeed use this card and cancel your order otherwise.

Avast! is the best free anti-virus. NOD32(efficient) & Kaspersky(secure) are the best paid anti-viruses. I've encountered many internet problems with norton's internet security suite, so you might want to uninstall that if you do.

Suggest everyone read section -=6=- 4Gb ram as its been heavily updated with a solution that should work if microsoft's own guide is correct!

 

What else does the /pae extension affect except allowing you to address memory up to 4GB? I doubt it just fixes the problem or M$ would have enabled it from the start or patched it in...

 

It say's as far as i could understand that it enables 36-bit only on the RAM. I do not know why microsoft hasn't enabled it, but read on the link provided and it should have the answers. Seems however i can't recall where i read that it enables 36-bit.. i might just have read wrong, cos it sounds weird - il try to find the article

Well this still doesn't explain why /pae isn't enabled from the beginning except for the fact that some older processors might not support it. But that shouldn't really matter, since they don't even meet the minimum requirements of Vista. Anyone using this method, can you confirm that it works and that there are no problems and performance issues with it?
