    I'm on a G73JH, but here's what I did...

    1) With no HDMI plugged in, set the speakers as the default playback device (right click the speaker icon in the task bar notification area, choose playback devices, right click speakers, choose set as default).

    2) Plug in HDMI and make sure video/audio going to TV.

    3) Go back into audio playback devices and make the HDMI audio device the default playback device (see step 1).

That worked for me....the default playback device switches to HDMI audio when I use an HDMI device and reverts to speakers when I switch back to LCD only .

Note that on my G73JH, if I hot-plug the cable in I don't always get the audio enabled so I sometimes have to reboot. That's a failure (design/driver/who knows) somewhere in my hardware and doesn't necessarily apply to other machines...
