Morning all, browsed through the other threads and was unable to find anything that related to my post, so thought I would finally register and ask the general public for some insight and opinions, maybe even a concrete answer.
I purchased the g73jh from best buy, p/n# is G73JH-RBBX05, and love the unit, my only problem was the native resolution of the screen. I am used to 1920x1200/1080 so figured I would see if there was a way to replace it/upgrade it.
I found this thread on these forums,
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/476583-upgrade-screen-bb-g73jh.html
which led me to laptopscreen.com and there I pulled down the model numger for the G73JH and it takes me to this page;
ASUS G73JH compatible Laptop LCD Screens. Brand-new (never used).
Well, I figured that that was that, model numbers match, people in the thread said it was easy enough, someone even had a guide to pulling the machine apart, so I went for it.
The screen shows up, correct dimensions and all that. I take apart the screen chasis, takes like 5 minutes, I pull the LCD panel out... and BAM. The replacement screens LVDS(think thats what it's called) port is on the other side of the screen. There is a bit of slack coming from the laptop, but not enough to stretch across, and cover the 6-7 inches needed.
Basically, when I put both screens viewing side down, side by side... the Port is on the right for the original, and the port is on the left on the new screen, respectively.
I guess, my question is, has anyone else ran into this? Have other people that have bought the BB model upgraded their screen, and where did you purchase your monitor. Did I miss something and just create a huge user generated error? I am going to send the screen back monday for a refund, it kind of bothers me that it says G73JH compatible on the website, and it is infact not... unless the BB model has some strange hardware revision and decided to make the change.
Any help and/or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

shameless bump, anyone have any insight?

seeing as you were able to get the screen out in 5 min it sounds like you have a bit of technical experience.
one rather brutish solutions would be to to cut the connectors get you some wire and extend them so it would reach as far as needed. get you some insulation tape it up and shove the newly extended wire into place. -
I don't know, but is there any kind of extender/adapter that could take care of the situation?
That's the problem with forums, si that people say, "oh yeah, it's easy," and they haven't even actually done it or tried it. Hope you find a solution, but I have to ask- if you wanted a 1920 x 1080 screen, why didn't you buy one of the other models that has it? -
The reason I bought the lower end instead of the higher end, is the only difference between the models was the more expensive one had 2GB more of RAM, another HD or larger, and the higher res screen. The price difference was like 3-400, and the other differences didn't really matter to me, so the cheaper option was to just buy the screen and swap it myself lol.
I will definately look around and see if I can find an extension cable, I don't think I will go the wire cutting route though. I actually considered it haha.
But yeah, taking the screen out was fairly simple, 2 screws to get the front plate off, then out 12ish inside to release the screens bracket from the frame, and then 4 on the bottom to release the bottom brackets. Had a friend hold the top while I slid it out. If I had never done something like this before, I would have disassembled the whole thing.
Thanks for the insight guys! -
I know on the G51 this was a common problem, and a few did cut and extend the cable themselves, but I didn't like that idea, so never upgraded. I hadn't read about this being a problem on the G73's though, and was planning on upgrading mine possibly down the road, but definitely not if this is the same problem.
Is odd that others have posted without any issues that have shown pictures of doing the upgrade. Good luck, keep us updated! As I too have a Best Buy model that I'm interested in upgrading. I would definititely check with your supplier, they may have just sent a wrong screen. -
I guess I need to first find out what type of lvds cable I am looking for, now I am in uncharted territory.

out of curiousity, which screen did your's come with? The LG or the AUO?
-
It came with the LG screen, I had read up on it before hand and made sure I got the LG screen. The display model they had up had the AUO one, it really didn't look that bad, but it definately had a degraded quality when compared to the LG

Sorry to awaken a dead thread, but if you never got an answer I have it for you.
I just upgraded my G73 screen, and the old 1600x900 had the connector in the left, while the new 1920x1080 had it on the right. The cable from the gpu is plenty long--the gpu appears to be on the right side of the notebook, and so there is less of a distance to the connector on the new screen. You have to undo some tape and reroute the cable, but no cutting is required.
I'll post a link to my guide when I get that written.
