BIOS update on G74 - Not working

The ASUS Auo-update utility tells me that I need to (or rather 'suggests' that I should) updte my BIOS but it fails.

I tried to update it manually usng the winflash utility and the lastest update here:
    http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=G74Sx&p=3&s=336

It has the same problem - and same error.

"THE BIOS FILE VERSION DOES NOT MATCH THE BOS ROM VERSION". (See screenshot)

N.B. I currenty have BIOS version 201. The Auto-update feature has version 202, yet the downloads page has 203 (I guess the auto-update will catch up at some point).

I tried sending a support request to ASUS with all the information above (and the screenshot) but they clearly did not even read it as they just sent me a 'canned' response telling me to do what I have already done --- and completely ignored the error entirely.

    Any ideas guys and gals?

First STOP trying WinFlash or auto update. If you are sure you have the latest BIOS version, put it on a Fat 32 USB stick. Press F2 after power on and enter BIOS , insert the USB stick and then flash with EZFLASH
When I click your link it says 404 - File or directory not found.
I would redownload before flashing. BTW are you trying to fix something with the BIOS update?
IF you have the G74SX re download from here http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=G74Sx&p=3&s=336 & select others - to get 203

Sorry. That was/is the link I was using.
"flash with EZFLASH"? I am not sure what that is.

    The ASUS site has only:
    Windows BIOS Flash Utility
    and
    Description Aflash2 Utility

EZFLASH is a utility that is built into the BIOS. There is no download for this utility. IT is the safest way to update the BIOS
    See this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_x2wqX7Cxk
and Welcome to the forum. Let us know if this works for you

    Thank you.
I will try it tomorrow. Star Trek TNG is on TV (and I cannot miss that...).
If I never return...I have turned my laptop into a brick....

The BIOS I have downloaded is called 'G74SxAS.203'
The fle extension is *.203 (The version number).

According to that video link you provided the file he/she is is loading from is 'M4A77T~1.ROM'

Do I have the right type of file to use in EZFLASH or the file type dependant of the install method (i.e. is my file only useable with the 'Windows BIOS Flash Utility')?

    Thanks

The video is just an example of how to use the utility, I could not find a video of a G74SX flash.
Yes .rom is a BIOS file and can be used with either method
see G74SX BIOS 203 in this link
G73/74/53 Series Driver and Application Reference
Since you got an error initially I would redownload the file again just to be safe. But do not use WINFLASH or ASUS update.
do you know how to use Checksum to verify that the downloaded file is ok?

Yep. The file itself is fine.
You are saying that I 'can' use a file that ends in *.203 (as its extension) in EZFLASH? Because that is all I have.

I do NOT have a file that ends in *.rom (as is extension).

G74SxAS.203 is the correct name, after extracting it the size is 2.5 M
    That file should work fine
Your are smart to be cautious!
