I have had the laptop for 2 months now and decided to buy a Blu Ray disc fpor my G73 JH A1, and once in, the computer can read the disc however i cannot play it. I get a message ''Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD. The disc was created in a manner that the Player does not support.''. Surely this should be supported?? ANy help or suggestions appreciated.
EDIT: Also i have been trying to search forums for this problem and i cannot find it anywhere, so apologies if this thread has already been made somewhere...

You need to buy WinDVD or PowerDVD with Blu-ray support to play Blu-ray movies.

    Cheers,

Even after folking out 1200 quid on this laptop??? I find that diabolical and will be forwarding a fast complaint to Asus if that is the case :S

AFraid so. ASUS has a free 8.x version of WinDVD on their site but it won't play some of the latest films. I use WinDVD 2010 Pro.

    Cheers,

My G73jh-A1 came with PowerDVD 8 from Asus. Don't know if that's the version you are calling Win DVD. But it played Avatar in Blueray for me. I had to update the software for it to work, but it did play beautifully through the hdmi cable to my HD 46" Samsung tv. Playing blueray doesn't cost thing if your G73 came with a Blueray player. I think the player software is a part of a whole Cyberlink suite that came on its own separate DVD when I bought my G73 from PowerNotebooks.com

    Blu-Ray on a free trial? You're dreaming! :)

" Please note that Blu-ray and PureHD upscaling features are not available in the trial until after purchase."

I recently contacted ASUS support and got this link for an ASUS Only edition of powerDVD 9 (YES 9) that will play BR's in win 7 64 bit. WOW!!!!
Note download from their site was very slow, but it worked for me.

BillyRay, mine came with intervideo winDVD 8. I just backed up my system and am now installing the aforementioned cyberlink Powerdvd 9. Will test and post back shortly. I read somewhere that the newer machines come with this program.
this is actually a suite I installed only the powerDVD 9. I have run part of my favorite movie Goodfellas on BR successfully. I also like the fact you can run video file from the hard drive ( I could not figure out how to do this with win DVD 8). So far so good!

Oh sure, NOW they post a link for the OEM PowerDVD9 to reinstall it. Actually, it's OK, I'd rather have a retail copy of 10 Ultra.

That is awesome! Other than the really slow download it's about time!

Of course I already paid for WinDVD 2010 Pro.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the info! :D I think I'll stick with my Asus powerDVD 8 until it causes some problem, in which case I'll download the update.

I was wondering if the update was the whole Cyberlink suite, as that is also my only way to burn CDs and DVDs etc. Glad to know it is. :)

Thank you all, and especially JOSEA, this worked brilliantly and i managed to watch my movie! However the blu ray makes a bit of noise in the drive while playing, almost a grinding noise every few seconds, is this normal to anyone else?

You are welcome, glad to help. No that noise is not normal!!!
If mine was noisy I would look into getting a replacement CD/DVD module.
Installing also changes the file associations for various files, but this can be changed in configure power dvd - Player -Advanced - Associations.
Another tip I do not think this OEM version is updateable, IF you click upgrade they will try to sell you the new version. For me It has done what I needed so far, but I will probaly take Chastity's advice in the future. I don't see why ASUS could not have thrown in a full version on a $1000-2000 machine
