hey all. g73 is working good but i have a minor bug i was hoping for some advice on. i installed an additional 2gb stick of RAM in my machine (asus g73 jh from bestbuy with radeon 5870) and since it had 6 gb i decided on upgrading to 8. i did a lot of research and was told that on a new machine like mine as long as i match bus speed and type, everything should be fine and that i shouldnt have to upgrade all previous ram slots. so i went ahead and sprung for a new stick of Corsaid DDR3 2GB RAM with a 1066 mhz bus. this is, as far a i can tell, exactly the same type and bus as my other current 6gb (its all stock, no other upgrades). first thing i noticed when firing it up was a BSOD. i thought oh crap and switched it off. i decided to try turning it on one more time. problem solved. it booted into win7 no problem and in my computer it says 8gb memory. now everything works fine until i switch my lappy off and let it set for a few days. today, after about 3 days off time, i turned on my g73 and was greeted with" "Catalyst Control Center" has stopped working and this was followed immediately by a Memory Management BSOD. i uninstalled CCC. ill see if this makes a difference. also should i run memtest86? what else can i do? thanks

What laptop version ie (A1 / RBBX05) are you using? Run hwinfo32 and check each SODIMM to see if the RAM speeds are actually 1066 and not 1333.
-
thanks for the quick reply! and u are completely and totally right. i ran system info for windows and noticed that the ram speeds are actually 1333 not 1066. guess i can re-install CCC now lol. hoping to repaste later today to reduce temps
-
Even so the good thing from this is that you now know you have faster RAM -
so... i bought a new stick of ram. Corsair DDR3 with 1333 bus speed. i installed it and no problems. Computer recognizes RAM and all is good
or so i thought. lol i upgraded to catalyst 11.6 drivers before installing the ram. now whenever i shut the lid of my computer to hibernate, it wont resume when i press the button. it freezes and io have to hold down the power button. windows asks if i would like to attempt to restore from hibernation or to restart. i choose attempt to restore hibernation and it works no prob. any ideas? possible catalyst driver issue? or ram? the supported frequencies are different between my corsair ram stick and my stock ram. the stock sticks of ram run at 667 mHz and the corsair also runs at this speed but it does not say if this is a supported frequency. could this be it?
-
Did you ever get this hibernate problem before upgrading the RAM and CCC? You could uninstall CCC, run ATI crap cleaner and re-install 11.5 to see if the issue persists, it will allow you to rule out CCC as a problem.
Also, if you haven't done so, update your bios to 213. -
i never had this problem. when i upgraded my CCC, i deleted the drivers and booted into safe mode and used driversweeper to clean all the ati drivers. ill try a fresh install of 11.5....
any harm in using ram that doesnt directly say it supports the frequency it is being used at? its running at 667 mHz but i think the corsair ram doesnt list that it supports that frequency. thanks
oh and my bios is at 213.thanks. i had to do that to upgrade from stock drivers

Quick fix for you turn off hibernation
It does nothing for the computer when I use it and things seem sluggish when it resumes. Either use sleep or turn it onto a low power mode and turn on shutting the lid - (Do nothing) -
sio i think its something to do with the RAM... not sure but well see. i removed the 2GB stick. Windows failed to start and i shut it off and removed the corsair ram. all seems to be working fine now. has anybody ever heard of problems like this from RAM? i know i had two different types of Ram, but i was under the impression that problems were very very very slim if the type, bus speed, and capacity were all identicle.
-
Yes, the chances of different RAM not liking each other if you match clock speeds, capacity and timings is very slim but still there. I have mismatched SODIMMs in my M40 and it never caused me any problems. Different RAM sticks in the parent's old P4 desktop (yep, it's a dinosaur but let's not dwell on that) and no problems there either, but they are working in matched pairs on the desktop though.

so i removed the ram and all is working great. Im guessing the frequencies is what messed me up. All four sticks were running at 667mHz but the Corsair was not listed to be supported at that frequency. Thanks for all the help! and i guess Corsair RAM will not work with my stock G73
-
Either that, or you'd need another stick of corsair RAM to run them in dual channel. If there was a difference in frequencies and/or timings and the computer was trying to run them in dual channel that might cause a BSOD. I have absolutely no idea how the SODIMM connectors are paired for dual channel, you'd have to find that out.
