Hi All - G73Sw owner. Wondering; whats the thought on the battery being in vs being out all the time (unless needed). Read/Heard that you get better perf if it's left in. Thanks! - DT

People seem to think it is bad for the battery but the wear is not enough to warrant any reason to worry as the ACPI Battery Management prevents the laptop overcharging once it goes above a certain point around 95%.

My battery is the stock one and is 14 months old and has stayed in the entire time and I use it on battery every now and then. 6% wear which is nothing.

Performance wise there is no difference with it in or out when its on AC mode and that information sounds like it came from the same people who think the Twin Turbo button will allow you to hack into MI5.

Nothing wrong indeed in leaving the battery in. I usually remove it but it's more to prevent it from absorbing heat (i'm kinda OCD about those kind of things :p) when gaming than from overcharging it.

Generally speaking, if you aren't going to use it and will be tethered to an outlet most of the time- there's no reason to leave the battery in.

The problem with leaving a battery in all the time isn't the constant usage, it's the constant full charge. Most consumer batteries have cheap terminals inside which don't survive the constant 100% charge (the internal electronics have a hard time regulating charging at that level). Constantly keeping that 100% charge is what hurts it most (not to mention the heat near the laptop and while charging), as batteries have a decent charge/discharge limit which will outlive the battery usefulness.

That said, even being careful with batteries, 5-10% wear year-over-year is pretty typical with lithium batteries. Leaving it in all the time won't make an appreciable difference over the lifespan of the device or battery.

As I just mentioned ACPI battery management in these laptops prevents it reaching 100% and overcharging causing wear and the worst thing about the Asus G series is they do not give you a dummy battery meaning you have a huge gaping hole at the back of your laptop. For Shame!

Just leave it in. It's nothing worth worrying about.

There is a thread about the battery causing higher latency because of the way ACPI is handled through the asus drivers in windows. Test that for yourself. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/541000-disable-acpi-battery.html

Otherwise what MALIBAL #2 said, if you're looking to keep it prime keep it at 40% charge in your refrigerator. Keeping it constantly 100% charged and the warmth from the exhaust will shorten its life if you really care about the battery.

Really though it's a battery, it's a consumable item, so just use it normally.

I use to leave it out because I am always plugged in. However, I realized after a few storms that it is worth it to leave in as an ups.
