Alright, So I'm gonna buy an SSD next month.
I need one with at least 60gb of space.
It has to be under 160 dollars.
What's the best possible thing I can get for my budget in Canada?
Any specific drives that are good for the G73? That don't have compatibility problems and what not?
Thanks.
-
Anything with a sandforce controller. There are lots for about $100 @ 60gb.
-
Any better ones with more space for under 160?
-
go for either ncix.com or canadacomputers in ur in canada. the ocz vertex 2 and teh forsair F-series are the fastest SSD's
-
Intel X25-M, 80GB, G2, can be had new for $120-150 on ebay if you watch closely, prices will drop even further when the G3 comes out next month.
-
NCIX.com - Buy OCZ Vertex 2 Extended Sandforce 60GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD - OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G In Canada.
Is that one good?
How would it run on the G73? -
That will work perfectly!
-
Alright sweet, I'll look into it.
So how would I go about installing this SSD and doing a clean install of windows?
(Sorry I'm new to this) -
Quite easy, just make a bootable windows 7 usb stick ( if you don't know how: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/), open the bottom hatch, remove the primary drive (the one in the middle of the laptop is your C:\) and just put the SSD in place. Et voila!
Start the machine, at bios, press f2, select the usb drive as boot device, and get ur magical hat from the clauset and put it on! -
But I'm going to be installing off a windows 7 CD
So do I choose the disk drive then? -
I also agree a Vertex 2 is a good choice, but a intel 80gb is good also. Get the biggest you can afford since you only have 2 HD bays. Try this....

Then this to set it all up...

SSD tweaks are at the bottom.
... it may answer some of your questions.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 13, 2015 -
One more question
If I fresh install will it get rid of those pesky partitions Asus made? -
If you are gonna put your OS on your newly-bought SSD, its still gonna require a 100 mb partition for the system, but the rest is all up to you =).
It's better not to split it up though, to keep the performance at its best. -
Hm okay.
ONE last question lol.
So I need windows 7 and since I'm doing a fresh install and didn't get recovery CD's how do I go about getting windows 7?
Can I use my key on the bottom of the laptop and get a legit download? -
Be carefull with OCZ atm, they are having some issues with using 25nm on their ssds, i would avoid them unless you can make sure on getting 32nm which are fine. Check the following thread, Buyer Beware: OCZ Agility2 and Vertex2 issues.
Personally i think intel X25m is probably the best ssd of its gen, not the fastest, but reliable and the firmware is mature. I would wait for the G3 though, you might be able to get away with 80/120 gb inside your pricerange. -

Thanks a lot JOSEA!
I heard you had to "activate" the key on the bottom with MS first though?
Will I have to do that? -
Once you install win 7 you get 30 days to activate it(sort of a free trial) This can be done over the web or by phone. There is a way to save the activation file from your old hard drive thus avoiding web or phone activation , I think the answer is somewhere in the link I provided above... you though this was going to be easy didn't you?
Gotta go now, it 2 AM here man! Feel free to PM me if you have any other Q's,
Kudos to Kalim for the win 7 install thread!!! -

I just bought the ocz vertex 2, and i wasn't so lucky to get the old model but i can say that i'm not disapointed, and with the triks i've lernt here my system is really fast, a great improvement, much faster than the momentus xt
Best SSD?
