Hey everyone, I am looking for faster and better performing harddrives than my stock 500gb hdd's for my g73jh. I want to look at hdd's before I look at ssd's because of the amount of space for the price. Anyone have suggestions?
    Thanks.

either the hybrid momentus TX, since you plan to use it as OS driver as well, or one of the scorpio black, either the 500 or 750gb model.

    3 letters: S S D

Get an 80gb one if you dont have the money for more, but just get one, my G73 was retarded before, now it's AMAZINGLY fast

SSD is the absolute last thing I worry about for a laptop, couldn't care less. I agree, I'd rather get a Scorpio Black with 500gb or 750gb of space, it's reliable and it's cheap. Save the money for another rig in a year or two. Although if I had a choice, I'd go with the Momentus XT. Get a hybrid, decent boot times with plenty of hdd space and a low price.

Yeah I was the same didnt care less, ignored the hype and those so called SSD lovers.

HDD finally packed up and thought why not its a costly upgrade but so many swear by it.

Best upgrade I have ever got, you do not understand the performance of an SSD until you get one it is not just a slight increase in speed it is instant access to programs & files and a system that can boot for me in 15 seconds from hitting the power button, from gadgets to rainmeter to ready to go.

A normal HDD does not compare in any way. Agree with Polish Pat S S D.

@Op see my sig if you are interested in an SSD.

    Agree with Dallers, go SSD...

Get a small cheap one for the OS, and keep the 7200 RPM HDD for storage or whatever.

Second best is the Momentus XT, fast boot after a few times and HDD space.

How about if you have already 2 hdd's in G73? Should we remove the other hdd to have a slot for ssd? I still have free 500gb in my 2nd hdd waaaa what should I do on it...

    @TS:
If you need an HDD upgrade get SSD - sorry late comment.

Well I was the same had 2 500GB Seagates so got my 96GB Kingston 230mb/s read 180mb/s write for £80 delivered new from Ebay.

I sold my 500GB primary Seagate 7200RPM which was running at 80mb/s ish read and 80mb/s ish write for £20 on Ebay as it was on death's door.

£60 bargain upgrade for three times the read and twice the write and its silent.

Cool you sold already your 500GB. Hmm I might upgrade to SSD after several years or if reformatting is inevitable
I saw a video in youtube installing an OS for about 9mins on SSD

SSD is so cool and oh they have different reading speed(?)...I don't know much about SSD aside from it's super fast and pricey.

    Edit:
I saw your SSD for newb link.

For me I keep all of my personal stuff on my 2nd Drive so I had a 500gb primary drive and only 100gb of it was being used seemed pointless.

I didnt think it would make much of a difference considering I dont turn mine off all the time and need to keep booting but the general responsiveness is huge, copying files, loading programs, the speed in which games load especially for me Anno 1404/Oblivion/Witcher 2 all load super fast.

If you are want to cough up more for a more powerful performing SSD have a look at my Newb thread as there are some very good recommendations in there. I personally would have gone for the C300 as I liked the look of it but for double the price of my one with only 32Gb more space it seemed a waste of time, along with the fact my kingston was literally a plug in and away you go no firmware needed and it is reviewed as very reliable which is a good thing for an SSD noob like me ;)

Your sig says you have a g73jh. Unless its a 5400rpm, I doubt you will see much of a performance increase with another 7200rpm. Write/reads will vary between 80-120mb/s depending on the size and drive (from the 500gb Seagate 7200 up to the 1tb black scorpio 7200).

I'd strongly suggest going for a SSD that is between 90-120gb for your OS and favorite games. And using your existing 500gb for data (if you have much, I have 40gb free across 2 500gbs and 30gb free on a 120gb ssd)

SSD is for the response times and read/write access times of many small files. This is what most user experiences consist of. Not large sequential files where HDD numbers are responsible for transfers

after all if youre looking for space, the G73 has a second HDD, and maybe even a 3rd if you decide to scrap your optical drive. I have a 750gb HDD and a 240GB SSD, best upgrade ever. worth every penny

I'm gonna have to jump on the SSD bandwagon. If you want wicked fast speed, the transfer rates are insane. I've never had one, but I've watched comparison videos, and read comparison specs. I couldn't afford a good ssd, so I opted to get the seagate momentus xt. It is a great drive for the price. Stupid fast for a mechanical drive.......once it caches your frequented programs. After a few boots an program runs, I get about 17 seconds cold boot, but I have no widgets or anything that loads up. If you gotta have space and speed now but don't have a lot of cash, I would get the hybrid. If you don't need to upgrade right away, then I would save up and get a good ssd. Personally, I'm going to pick up a 120 gb ssd and use my momentus xt as a secondary. First things first though- gotta get my 920xm and 1080p screen >:]
    Hope this helps.

Also, I paid $99 with free shipping for mine, and it's brand new

I'll have to nab a few of those 160GB SSD's from the A2 models when I get to work (j/k Asus) (maybe)

I might consider a small ssd since everyone I have talked to so far has told me to go ssd. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I really appreciate it. Anyone mind suggesting a good ssd to invest in? Again something cheaper, so I know I wont be getting a huge amount of space.
    Thanks again
