I just bought the G73J from Newegg. I wanted to upgrade the Blu-Ray drive but am wary as to which drive to get. The ones from Newegg (Sony & LG) doesn't seem to have much in firmware support. Anyone have any suggestions?

do you have info on which drives you were looking at?
-
I wasn't really looking at any specific one except for the ones listed on Newegg:
Sony
Newegg.com - Sony Optiarc Black 4X BD-ROM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-ROM SATA Slim Internal 12.7mm Tray Blu-ray COMBO Model BC-5500H-01 - Blu-Ray Drives
LG
Newegg.com - LG Black 8X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 6X BD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA Internal Blu-ray Super-Multi Combo DriveModel CT21N - Blu-Ray Drives
Both drives however lack any firmware updates when I tried to search the manufacturer's web site. -
I want to swap in a blu-ray drive as well. Do these fit in just like the stock dvd drive or will there be any gaps or fitment issues?
-
No, there are not. You just switch the fittings and front cover from the old one to a new one.

I ordered this one a week ago for my X1:
LINK DELETED BECAUSE THE DRIVE IS JUNK!
It's coming from Hong Kong, I think. I'll report back when I get it installed with any issues around replacing the bezel and playing movies with it. I think my order said it would take something like ten days to get it to Texas. -
Does anyone know a drive that fits and works perfectly in the G73? -
Most bd-rom drives only require the bezel to be swapped but some require firmware updates that are not easy to obtain.
I've had very good luck with the Sony (5500s) and HP OEM drives (Panasonic UJ240(burner I bought used for $85), UJ141).
Cheers, -
The name is more common for girls, I guess but they end it with an "ie" instead of a "y". Anyway, Please don't buy this drive. It has the wrong firmware in it. It WILL NOT play blu-ray movies. I'm going to remove it from my previous posts.
The worst part is, that I bet eeshops KNOWS it has the wrong firmware. That's why they are cheaper than any other blu-ray reader out there. -
Yes, they probably do.

Any info or leads on a Plextor or Pioneer Blue-Ray burner to replace a Sony BD-5730S? It doesnt need to be super fast, just relaiable and good solid firmware.
Thankx in advance!!!
