Hey guys, I am brand new here, but I am having an issue with a recently purchased G73 from Best Buy. The scenario that is occurring is that sometimes, when I am trying to boot the PC by pressing the power button, the keyboard backlight comes on, the drives sound like they are spinning up, but the screen never comes on and I never hear the welcoming Asus boot sound. This happens infrequently but it is troublesome. Normally I just have to power it back off by holding down the power button, and it will come right back up correctly when turned back on.

However, the other day it did this to me 6 times in a row. It has not happened for the last couple of days but I fear it will be a serious issue once it is out of warranty it will not boot at all.

I haven't done anything to it (no bios updates or the like) and I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue in the past, and if there are any solutions to it, or if I should take it back to Best Buy and have them look at it.

    Thanks in advance!

well i own that laptop and haven't had anything like that happen. I say install the latest bios and vbios and whatever drivers you need. If it still does it take it back for a replacement.

Yeah, update to the "beta" vbios floating around here (it works fine) and bios 211. Also be sure to install any and all windows updates - there was a hotfix from around sept that solved random windows lockups.

You should also check your drives for SMART errors, google for howto!

Thanks for the responses, but if it was a HDD error wouldn't I still get the Asus screen at the start. We are talking nothing comes up, the monitor doesn't even come on. The sucker won't post. Then I turn it off and back on and 99% of the time this works. It does it when plugged in and running on battery.

I am a bit concerned about flashing my BIOS. The last BIOS I flashed was on an Abit NF7-S board 6 or 7 years ago. That went well but it appears that there are a great number of people who have bricked their laptops because of it. I really appreciate the help here guys.

Oh, if it won't even post then there is a non-hdd problem, like a bad power brick or a bios corruption. If you recently bought it (within the last month or 2) then it might already be on bios 211, or at least 209 (which is fine too, mine is 209). I have a suspicion that it is a bad memory chip, too - you can be sure of that by googling for "memtest86", or if you have a live linux usb it would already have that program on it.

It might just be best if you take it back to bestbuy and have them replace it (or the faulty psu or memory) for you under warranty - don't explain that you can 'eventually' turn it on, just demonstrate for them right there that it will not post. Then tell them it is either faulty memory, or a faulty psu; have them replace one or both and see if it will post then and there.
