    Hello people,

I've bricked my GPU by flashing the wrong bios to it and now I need to replace it. A friend of mine lives in montreal and will be getting me a new card from there. I have an Asus G73SW notebook with a nvidia GTX 460M GPU. Where would be the best place to get a replacement? Does he have to contact Asus to arrange one or would any specific hardware shop do? I need to let him know where to look before he comes back for a visit.

    Thanks.

Right now there's someone in the Marketplace selling one for 100$ + shipping. Getting a replacement through service would cost you much more. You could also contact svl7 and see if he's still offering bios replacements.

Thanks for letting me know but unfortunately my GPU has a different board layout than the standard MXM so his GPU will not mount properly on my motherboard. Any other suggestions?

There's no way in hell that I am paying around 300 $ to get this thing fixed. Worst case scenario I will just have to sell It as is. Also, I'm not interested in making any modifications to install a 7970m in it. It either gets fixed for around 200 $ or gets sold as is. Any idea what I should ask for it? I was looking to get a new laptop any way so this might be my chance to get away with it.

I still think cheapest way is to reprogram vbios chip. You must have service center around you that can do that.

If you can't fix it by reprogramming the bios chip, the only thing you can do to sell it is to either sell it for parts, find someone that plans to do the 7970m mod and sell it to him for cheap, or do the 7970m mod yourself and then try to sell it. I'd say the third option offers the biggest chances for a decent sale.

Who would buy a notebook without a gpu and a proprietary form factor otherwise?

I have sent my laptop to the Asus service centre in Dubai but they are telling me that the only way to fix the problem is by replacing the GPU with a new one. I asked about reprogramming the cbios chip and they said that they don't do that and that they send it back to China or Taiwan to have it done. I am waiting for a quotation from them and if the price is too high then my only option is sending it to you jmhdj and have you try to do the repair. We'll see how it goes...

I know in the UK there are emergency bios recovery services who do it.

I would do it for no fee as it is fairly easy job. But turnaround shipping to norway is not cheap :(

It should not cost much, there are likely JTAG programming pins on the PCB anyway.
