I was a bit annoyed that CCC always showed the wrong version after installing the 10.1 driver - it always showed the previus version installed, so i looked into it.
It turns out ATI forgot to put the line into the INF file so the key in registry doesnt get updated.

So there are two ways to make CCC show 10.1 as driver version (or you can write any version you want it to display if you prefer):
    a) The easyer one is to just change the key in regedit. Its under:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000
The name is: Catalyst_Version. Just modify it and change it to 10.1.
(You can also use find and type in the version CCC is currently displaying, should also find it that way.)
This is the solution i used.
    b) Add the following line under [ati2mtag_SoftwareDeviceSettings] section in the CW_94995.inf file in <Driver Folder>\Packages\Drivers\Display\W7_INF before you install the driver:
    HKR,, Catalyst_Version,,"10.1"
Havent tested this myself, but it should work.

This does nothing else than just change the version it shows in the CCC, so it has no particular use, but i like the version displayed to actually match the driver package.
But as i said, you can actually put in anything you want.

So you're saying that if somebody installed 10.1 over stock drivers it would still say 9.12?

Where does this 10.1 driver come from? The Asus site? and if so, how does one reach the driver. I know Chastity has a link to the 10.1 driver, but so far I have been unable to actually locate this driver without using her link.

On the Asus site the download for the G73 VGA driver is VGA...868300.zip which is the 9.12 driver

The link Chastity uses has VGA...869210.zip

But I don't know how this link is found without a direct link

Thats correct, it would still say 9.12, becouse the 10.1 inf file is missing a line to update that.
The 10.1 driver is on the Asus support site. My package and strings versions match these 10.1 on this site.
Just go HERE and select Notebook->G73->G73JH and Windows 7 64bit, and its the only driver under VGA (the one dated 2010/01/29).

So you're saying that the Asus support site driver version is 10.1? And that the reason it does not say 10.1 is because CCC is displaying the wrong version?

No wonder I'm having so much trouble sorting out what Asus is supplying on their download page.

Yes, but only the Catalyst Version in CCC is displayed wrong, all the other numbers should be correct. And this was ATIs mistake, their reference 10.1 drivers are also missing this line, infact i think Asus didnt do anything to change those reference drivers, but rather just uploaded them on their site.

Indeed...that's been my findings so far - no evidence that Asus changed the drivers in any way.

One thing I see in the Asus drivers that I don't see in the 10.7 reference driver is the "SUBSYS" ID that differentiates the "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870" from the more general "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series".

I can't find any downloads for driver packages between Asus' so-called "10.1" and the ATI reference 10.6 so I don't have enough info to say if ASUS added the 5870 SUBSYS ID or not...

You can also try Notebook->Drivers->VGA and Windows 7 64bit and you'll find Version V8.692.1.0 04/15/2010

Are the Version V8.700.0.0 ATI drivers found on Asus site just some reference drivers from ATI?

Yes, id say they are the 10.1 reference drivers since i cant find a single difference.
As i said, the reference 10.1 drivers also work just as fine and the digital signature is the same. The problem is what ATI changed in later reference drivers...
