I just used the ICC file generated by notebookcheck during their review of a notebook equipped with the Hannstar HSD173PUW1, the same display in our G73s
Instead of the colours becoming more vibrant as i had hoped, they took a yellowish hue and became dim..
How come? will the colour profile generated by calibration tools such as spyder3elite only work on the display on which it was done? doesnt importing it calibrate displays of similar make?(if not completely, then partially?)
PS: for anyone who wants to try out the colour profile, you can always revert to defaults if the colours appear messed up..

I am using the Spyder 3 Pro on my G73 with Hannstar display. I recently bought the Spyder so i am no expert but so far i have made 8 different profiles under different lighting conditions with different screen brightness. It is important that the conditions is about the same as when the calibration was done. If you like i can send you a couple of profiles made under different conditions such as artificial light, indirect sunlight etc. Maybe you will get the result you are looking for?
The screen on G73 has a very bueish tint and the colors are far off. When i made my first calibrations i thought that something was wrong with the Spyder. Looking at pictures in Digital Photo Professional coming from my Canon 50D i realized how wrong the colors were prior to calibration. -
I know Anandtech calibrate LCD when they do their review.
Anandtech concluded the default setting was the best and most accurate for color accuracy. -
@Registered kindly do send me the profiles, definitely wanna try em out..
-
The M6500 needed a target setting of 1.8 gamma before we could unlock its potential for color accuracy; we've tried a variety of settings on the other laptops and the best result on the G73Jh is still the default settings in ColorEyes Display Pro. -

I discovered a new feature, attachments
Here is two different profiles. Set screen brightness to maximum. One profile is calibrated for tungsten light the other is indirect sunlight with no artificial light.

^thanks.
will test are report back..
Edit: well i tried out the profiles, they're similar to the profile created by notebook check which i had linked earlier
Well the colours seem to be better but the whites and grays seemed washed out and yellowish..
i changed to the colour temperature to 7800k which seems to make the whites more accurate while retaining the vibrancy of the colours with the new profile.
I tried taking photos with my phone to post for comparison but unfortunately, i couldn't make out the difference in the pictures.
Thanks a lot Registered, will definitely buy myself a spyder3express soon..
PS: could anyone check in CCC and lemme know the default colour temp, was it 6500k?
Also please attatch any profile you might have created for a dark room, thanks.. -
-
Nevermind, found it. -
Two more profiles. This time ambient color temperature is forced to 6500C (same as Spyder 3 Express). One calibrated with Screen brightness set 50% the other to 100%. Leave the screen on for half an hour before judging the colors. Compare the greys with a Black/White photo. On my screen there is no yellow tint and colours and greys are great. Give it a shot!

Thanks for the profiles, just tried the above two, and will say not bad but it does have a distinct brownish tint to whites. I have also g73jw
ps: question do you guys/gals have splendid installed and using also? when i set these profiles to default my color scheme has a red brown type of tint. then all scroll through all the splendid modes until it hits normal setting and looks real good white is white?? -

HSD173PUW1 is what my display is listed as i believe it is an hannstar as its the same as the thread title. Now this info is from the resolution menu when you right click on desktop and select screen resolution. and in nvidia control panel its say hannstar display
-
I tired some of these profiles with my LG screen on my JH and they have done wonders for color correction.
-
Just remember not all G73JW come with the same monitor
And even then not all have the same brightness, things vary for each monitor, its best to use the sypder3express or any other calibrating system under your monitor and not use another profile. -
Anyway thanks again Registered..
Btw were thes profiles(6500k ones) generated while doing the calibration in a dark room? if not, could you please post one that was generated in completely dark room.. thanks. -
-
unfortunately spyder3express is for about $140 here(India) so will wait till i go abroad or a friend is returning from the US... -
The last one was calibrated in a dark room. If i set the colortemp to 7400K using the last profile it looks bloody terrible. It's hard to believe that two panels are that far from eachother in terms of color. -
FYI: The Asus Splendid Application, if set to Gamma Corrected, will setup a usable color profile.
-
Please give this a try. I have upgraded to Spyder 3 Elite which is a huge upgrade compared to the Pro version. I have made a new static profile calibrated to 7200K at 60% screen brightness. Make sure that the Kelvin temp is set to 6500K in ATI CCC. This profile will blow your brains out, thats a promise. It might be a tiny bit cold or warm but very close to perfect. Please give me some feedback.

Forgot to mention. Do not have any other program that controls the screen like Adobe Gamma or similiar. I dont now if Asus Splendid Application affects the colors but probably. -
-
Could you do me a favour and generate one with your temp set to 7500k and at max possible brightness in a dark room..
Thanks -
Sure! The color temp varies with the brightness so i'll make a couple of new ones when i'm back home. -
Thanks for info, so to confirm when applying one of these color profiles have splendid at gamma correction mode? Also how do you go about disabling splendid without uninstalling, sorry for noob questions but do appreciate the help.
Also is anybody elses back light seem like its way to overpowered, seems like it bleaches out whites and makes blacks not all that great, this is stock profile. Its the only thing keeping me from being fully satisfied with this laptop. -
Autoruns for Windows
Do you have the Hannstar FullHD (1920x1080) screen do you have an 1600x900 screen? When calibrating the screen Spyder 3 measures the brightness and suggests setting the brightness to 80 Candelas / m2 which equals Brightness at 60%. At 60% you will get the best color, Black/White reproduction. If you don't have the Hannstar then using my profile will probably not make the colors better. -
roger that on hannstar, thanks for info and the link to that prog.
-
Here we go. Four profiles, 7200 - 7500K at 100% Brightness. These look way to cool on my screen.
THX5354, curtcocaine. Better?

the difference isnt too pronounced between these profiles, a little bit cooler but overall i liked the 7200k with 60% brightness the best.. the colours seem most accurate and vivid with that profile.
BTW Does anyone know of a way i can edit an icc profile someway to tell my display to show 1R1B1G (red, blue, green = 1,1,1) when its told to show black instead of the 0R0B0G (red, ble, green = 0,0,0)?
it would sure hep with the dithering problem, it can get very prominent when showing absolute blacks sometimes...
for those who wanna know what dithering is see this. Scroll down and see the animated gif and read the explanation. I'm guessing i'm not the only one having this problem coz it says all 6bit displays have it to some extent. You have to see it from real close up to notice it.
The weird part is, it doesnt happen all the time with me, sometimes it shows the blacks as absolute pitch black and sometimes i can make out the dithering. -
Open up the ICC file in a Hexeditor. There is two blocks with data each containing three blocks ranging from 00 - FF for red, green, blue. I am guessing the first one is the input and the second is the output to be generated. It should'nt take to long to figure it out.
The Spyder Software recommends after measuring different brightness settings that 60% brightness will give the best result. I think this is as good as it gets on this screen. -
Hey really enjoying your 7400k full brightness profile i think this is probaly going to be the best it can be, plus i removed the splendid video stuff as that has always mad the picture look like crap.
-
I agree on Splendid, never understood the point of switching between 5 bad profiles. But thats me, others may disagree.
-
i even read the icc specification to see which part of the file stores what but couldnt identify which parts to edit.
infact i'm not even sure whether it;ll work coz i tried replacing parts of the file with a bunch of random data and it didnt make any difference somehow..
yayy i found out why my display was dithering so much on blacks!!
it was coz i had the brightness increased in the Desktop & Displays>notebook panel>colour setting in CCC
apparently setting the brightness to anything above 4-5 then the dithering is greatly accentuated.
someone else try this and confirm. While focusing on a completely black background increase the brightness in the CCC to see whether it starts happening to you.. -
I'll look into the ICC profile this weekend. -
@Registered: I'm a newbie in this, could you please explain step by step about how to apply the colour profile you upload. I want to try it but I don't know how to.
-
if you dont like it then reset to defaults or just remove it
If you do like it and want it as default then goto Advanced tab in colour management>change system default>set it just like you did before -
thx for the explanation, and I already did that, but I didn't see any difference.
There's some thing I don't know yet, like how to change colour temp and change screen brigthness to 60%, thx alot -
Hi guys!
Im find out my panel is CMO1726 (asus g73sw-xt1) and i would like to know if i can use this profiles in this panel?
Thanks in advance -
No, it's the wrong panel.
-
Hi there,
I`m trying to find out what lcd panel is in G73sw-3d? I wish I could find a proper icc profile to calibrate colors at last.
any help will be great! -
If your monitor shows up as Generic PnP in device manager, install hwinfo32 or hwinfo64 http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.htm
Run this program and once intalled launch it, click show all on the systray icon and you can verify what panel you have -
OK. I did as you said and it worked. Thanks a lot!
-
This is awesome, I didn't even know you could change the setting of a display on a laptop, damn I'm stupid lol.
I'll be playing around with these settings, I'm having the same problem as oligartoon though, when I apply the profiles I don't see a change
