Can OC the GPU cause a BSOD?

This may just be coincidence, but it seems like a possibility.

I occasionally get a BSOD with my Asus. Nothing seems to be damaged by it, so I just let it reboot and it works fine. I have never been stuck in a BSOD.

Here's the interesting part. When I upgraded my AMD driver to 11.5, I stopped getting BSOD. I thought the update fixed it, but then I noticed that my FPS sucked in my games (mainly rift). I decided to go into CCC and sure enough, the update reset my OC to stock.

I changed it to the recommended 800/1100 and my FPS improved a good 20-30. Everything was fine. When I booted up my laptop this morning, it gave me the BSOD. It just seems a bit fishy that as soon as I OC my GPU, the next morning it gives me a BSOD.

If it is the OC, should I reset to stock before I shut down? I installed afterburner so it's rather easy to switch between OC and stock GPU.

If you are using Overdrive and PowerPlay, it should be downclocking / overclocking automatically.

Open up CCC and you will find a tab for PowerPlay. It regulates the power savings of the GPU by controlling clock speeds.

yes it will cause bsod if the core gpu voltage is too low for the overclock you have done..that's the reason it is recommended to oc in 50mhz intervals..and torturing with furmark!

GPU clock tool and Overdrive are both fine. It won't change you max OC of course, i get artifacts in furmark if i OC my memory over 1090MHz regardless of the tool used.

Oh and we used the GPU clock tools before the days of the new vBios.

To the OP, yep you can BSOD if you OC too much.

What's your stable OC clocks? I see some going up to 840/1100.

And is the performance boost pretty good?

You can only BSOD from CPU overclocking, GPU just freeze/the screen is full of artifacts.

Meh, i got a BSOD due to a video driver crash when i OC'ed to death... other than that, i agree i got artifacts almost every time i OCed too far, only that one random BSOD.

You can OC your GPU to death!

I did that, Overdrive, MSI Burner, whatever...

Had to RMA, got a new 5870, superservice by Asus, but I´m finish fooling around with the clocks...

Yesterday it was 30C here and summer it just beginning (maybe that's why I got 105C only with one hour of game time). So are you telling me if I change my clocks over 800/1100 and it's hot, my gpu will die lol?
