Buy ASUS G series laptop. Excellent performance, i have been using G-50VT x6, and almost all games i played on High settings.
Poor on battery back up, but you cant expect that in a gaming laptop. Check newegg.com for deals on the same...
Newegg.com - ASUS G74 Series G74SX-XN1 Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 17.3" 12GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

i agree, i bought a G51vx-rx05 from Best Buy over two years ago. Bad Company 2 was the first game to come out that i couldn't run on high. even then, it runs, just low fps.
i'm about to finally upgrade the CPU and do a repaste. if you're in the market NOW, i would say find a good deal on either a G74 (best buy has some open box's/refurbished for $900) or a G53. both are great and for your price range you might be able to pick up a 3d model.
if you can hold out, the CES 2012 is right around the corner and Asus might be rolling out a new model of the G53 (maybe the G54 or G55). also the ivy bridge models could be out by the middle of next year.
even if you're not going to buy one, this will mean that the current models will be getting a price drop. -
I know your trying to get an Asus laptop, but why not get a clevo for $1600 at like xoticpc? I just checked that the 6990m is $100 off making it $145. I'm sure you can build a great rig for that price ($50 i7-2670 upgrade looks nice as well

Yup. I'd get a clevo/Malibal as well for some serious gaming with a good graphics card.

Agreed, get a Clevo if you need gaming power. Asus is just lacking right now, the 560M isn't that impressive compared to what Clevo has.
But... if you want a quiet machine, a great design, backlit keyboard etc, go with the G74SX. It's a fine machine, it should run all your games on high settings, and it seems to overclock well.
Personally I may still go with Asus, I just hate loud fans and Clevo notebooks are still the loudest fans of any laptops. It's something they haven't bothered to fix. Read that even Alienware has rectified that with m17x R3, though not as quiet as a G Series from Asus, but signficantly quieter than Clevos. -
Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
For $1600 you can get a gaming beast such clevo based notebooks that will last twice any asus released, and they are expandable.
Dont get me wrong i love my G53 but if i had that sum to spend for sure i wouldnt get one. At all
Can anynone here recommend me some Asus gaming notebooks for $1600
