    Hey j00zl33t:

I put a Sony Optiarc BD-5730S in my G73jw. No firmware upgrade required. Provides read and write for all Blu-Ray, DVD and CD mediums, took less than 5 minutes to install and, so far, has worked great. Got it on eBay for about $100.00 but I had to wait and watch for about a month to get it at that price. Sorry, I don't remember who the vendor was. Good luck.

    Best regards
    Ross

I upgraded to an LG CT21N about 8 months ago and it works perfectly fine. Had no issues with Blu-Ray playback or burning DVDs.

    ..
Ok .. re-read you question. The LG CT21N CANNOT burn Blu-ray .. just DVD.

Out of curiosity, how did you guys...err...well like the internal drives on notebooks have a sort of covering on them, I guess, that's part of the notebook's body...how do you get that off or transfer it to a new drive? I've never understood that.

I'm trusting that you are referring to the bezel or faceplate on the front of the optical drive, the trim piece that carries the manufacturer's name, logos, etc. If so, it's very easy to swap from one drive to another, assuming that they are compatible, as they simply unsnap / snap in place. The original bezel from my G73jw was easily removed and it replaced the one on the new Sony Blu-Ray drive.

You'll need a paper clip to manually open the trays and a small flat blade screwdriver to depress the clips. Search " video swap bezel faceplate optical drive " and you'll find several good presentations on how to do this.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards
    Ross

Yeah, thanks! Just eyeballing it it's never been obvious to me how to do it, so I've never tried.

EDIT: I probably should have tried an internal drive on my current notebook...been through THREE external solutions, none of which have really worked.

    Dumb question coming.

Are the form factors universal for laptop Disk players? As in, any Bluray drive one buys would fit in the ASUS? Face plate aside, obviously.

    Hawflake:

Please take this information with a grain of salt as it's based solely on the research that I did in finding the correct Blu-Ray optical drive for my G73aw-A1.

I found that there are 2 different heights available, 12.7mm and 9.5 mm. The G73 series uses the taller of the two, the 12.7mm. Other than that I believe that all specs are the same so it's important to get the correct height. As far as the bezel / faceplate goes, I can tell you that the OEM part swapped easily to the new Sony BD-5730S optical drive that I installed.

    Best regards
    Ross

I am a little leary of the quality of writeable Blu Ray discs on the market right now. If you go to site like Amazon and check out the discs, the reviews are full of stories of people losing data after long periods of time. Maybe the technology on consumer side is not quite mature yet.
