G73s easily meet the AutoCAD system requirements.

If you have the cash, a CPU upgrade could be worth it if you're doing lots of 3D modeling work.

It's not hundreds, but THOUSANDS. You can always try the trial out to see if it works. Link

I use Autodesk Maya and 3D Studio Max, and I do alot of heavy rendering, and it works great with the G73, although I agree that a cpu upgrade would really benefit although if you are going to spend over $2500 you are much better off getting a mobile workstation.

Would upgrading the RAM from 8GB to 16GB help rendering or is it overkill

I'm an architect and I use my G73 with AutoCAD, Revit and 3ds Max daily. I'd recommend skipping the 16GB of ram and instead putting the $ towards a good SSD. That component alone is the best upgrade you can put in a mobile workstation.
BTW, you can run AutoCAD 2011 on pretty much any new laptop... I've even run it on a Eee before without a hick-up!

When memory prices drop sometime in the next year then I'd go ahead and bump up the ram.

An SSD + a 920XM from Ebay would be a killer upgrade for that application.

SSD is enough... the G73 makes my uni's desktop computers look like crap which they are.... they bought G310's instead of dedicated cards with core i5 processor and when they bought dedicated cards , they didn't fit. Nice one!

Wouldn't the 920XM cause overheating and isn't it overpriced right now?

its cheap now... 940xm is expensive and if you apply thermal paste properly on it , your G73 should have no problems.

ES models go for about $350 on ebay, and they work.
