Can the G73 be turned on with the lid closed?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if I get this laptop I plan to use it as my desktop replacement gaming system. Some laptops have a power button on the side such that you can turn it on and output to your external monitor without opening the lid. Anything along those lines on the G73 or do I always have to open the lid, power it on, then close the lid (with the setting to do nothing when it's closed)? And I do not want to keep it on 24/7 where I can wake it up from standby with the mouse/keyboard. For example, does anyone have this on a slide out "keyboard" tray under their desk?

You best bet is probably to open the lid, turn the laptop ON and then close the lid.
Most people here probably wouldn't recommend it though since the G73 sucks air from the top as well and blocking this air intake will affect temperatures.

Hmm I wonder what these notebooks are that have power buttons on the side. Every Dell/Toshiba/Acer/Asus/Apple/Compaq notebook I've ever used, power button under the lid.

And also, having your lid closed is not recommended for ANY laptop. The heat from the keyboard and laptop can destroy the LCD. It doesn't always happen and some people do keep their lid closed, but it is not recommended.

Lastly why would you buy a G73 if you don't have plans on using the 17" monitor? There are 15" notebooks with the same i7 and HD5870/GTX 460M as the G73 but without the 17" LCD. Why pay for something you aren't going to use?

Yes, you can. But you have to lift the lid a little bit in order to get to the power switch.

Mac users do this all the time. It's called clamshell mode. Most of the folks who do it leave it on and let it sleep. I've always felt just buy an iMac if you want a desktop but hey there are a ton of Apple fans using their laptops in clamshell mode.

    Cheers,

A very capable notebook that has it's power button on the side is the Sager NP8690. I know this is the ASUS board but it think it's relevant to the question asked :)
