Hi, I just bought a g73jh, and updated to 10.6, however been having problems with GSOD and want to go back to the stock 9.12 but I am having problems uninstalling 10.6, I do the official uninstall, and the Driver Sweeper in safe mode, boot back up and install the drivers off the disc, and every single time 10.6 is still installed after reboot. I went hunting in temp folders and deleted anything 10.6 related I could find, but something is up.
So if any one has some other suggestions on how to get rid of 10.6 so I can downgrade the drivers please let me know, thanks. I really would like to avoid reformat if I could.
Unless I am reading it wrong, Says Catalyst Version 10.6 and Catalyst Control Center Version 2009.1217 = 9.12?

Uninstall the drivers&CCC, restart, boot into safe mode, run driver sweeper, restart, boot into safe mode again, install drivers from ati website (10.1 is there). Reboot normally.
That should do the trick and CCC should show 10.1 after that. -
Seeing 10.6 in the CCC Info page is just a bug. Ignore that.
-
Actually i tried a clean install of the stock driver (10.1).
I had the 10.6 and uninstalled it, ran driver sweeper from safe mode and installed the 10.1.
I am still seeing the 10.6 in CCC and my settings were stored even though i made sure i cleaned everything with driver sweeper (i analyzed twice and the list was empty).
So are you sure its a bug? Its already strange for it to show 10.6, but to also have the same settings stored from before, i dont think driver sweeper did its job.... -
Tried again to be sure, same thing. I really think driver sweeper doesnt find everything.. Ill go look into the registry this time to see if i can find something myself...
-
Can someone else confirm this bug or explain whats going on? Besides the driver version showing up as 10.6 after i installed 10.1 the CCC also had all my previous settings from 10.6 stored...
And i did a sweep with driver sweeper and tried twice to make sure... -
try to uninstall from device manager check the remove drivers software then reboot. run the driver sweeper in sasfe mode. then reboot and install the drivers you want then reboot again. this worked for me
-
When I tried to uninstall 10.5 or 10.6 my screen went black after the the driver was removed and had to force reboot so win driver could load :/
-
Same problem here, im just waiting for Asus to release a new vga driver.
-
Uninstall from device manager + running driver sweeper after that in safe mode worked to get rid of it showing 10.6 after a 10.1 install, but the settings in CCC were still saved... So this still wasnt a complete uninstall as it seams...
Anyone know of another method that would delete 100% of ati software - drivers and CCC settings? -

I too had similar problems when trying to update to a newer version of CCC. Until Asus releases a new version of the driver I will just let it be. Even after all of the steps others have mentioned I just did a restore on the laptop and called it good. I didnt have black screens, instead I had issues with the laptop getting confused with resolutions anytime something graphic related ran on the laptop.
I have become a big supporter of leaving it alone unless you are having problems. My G73 runs everything I want smoothly with great success. -
im running 10.6 with zero issues since they game out. Just got off a 3 hour game of BC2 then some maya. But then again, ive never had a single GSOD on this laptop.
-
Yeah I had to get rid of 10.6 cause it kept GSOD in Dragon Age, in the menus. Don't feel like changing clock speeds to obtain stability just yet. Working good on the 9.12 driver, but I can't get the FFXIV Benchmark to work unless its on 10.6 and change the clock speeds, so I hope Asus releases a stable driver before FFXIV comes out in sept.
-
So can a reseller or someone who knows whats going on say once and for if all these GSODs on any other than stock drivers are caused by a faulty GPU or could it really be something with the drivers, cause i havent heard of any Clevo or MSI Mobility 5870 user complain about any GSOD issues?
I have to know - do i need another GPU or is there actually something with the drivers...
If i only still had that Clevo Mobility 5870 i could test it in my G73JH and see if its the Asus GPU or a driver conflict... -
-
i have run 10.6 without any issues without doing any modification to the videocard or modifying clock speeds. Maybe some g73's aren't prone to GSODs as others. But Im back to 10.1 but maybe ill get back to 10.6 since i get the same temps as the 10.6 now.
-
I'm biased to believing the GSOD issue is tied to the power management.
-
Hello, its two months now since I got my g73 and have used both beta and official 10.6 relase and never had any issues so I dont believe that there is software related errors we are getting with g73`s. If so then we all others would have same issues as you (unlucky) guys.
-
But now I just got one question for all you guys who have issues with gpu`s on g73. Anyone of you that has this problem: When you boot on cold boot (like when pc was off overnight or was off for enough long time too all components get room temperature) does your pc lock before or sometimes on asus logo when powering on? With me it happens all the time no exceptions. But fortunaly its enough to just shut it down and start again.

Yeah I already tested it and I can confirmed it's the ATI non-stock driver causing the GSOD:

I wish we could get a really good manual on how to properly set up p4g and what different settings will do. I don't think the program is easy to use, it is counter-intuitive, and has no manual.
Right now I'm playing with quiet office, while plugged in, and am playing with the minimum proc. setting to see how low I can go without getting momentary SOD's at the Asus splash screen when doing restarts. It seems 12 % is adequate so far. This program affects the GPU and CPU temps, freqs, and power. -
And I can CONFIRM that its NOT a non stock driver issue because ever since day 1, ive never ran the stock driver. Ive never gotton a GSOD, crashes or any sort of screen issues or screen locks.
I used the 10.4 right when I got it, then the 10.5 BETA for about a month, now the 10.6 since the day it released and had absolutely no issues what so ever at all. This is all while running the the thing with crysis, BC2 and maya/max and the adobe accelerated GPU features in photoshop and after effects.
If the 5870 is working fine in its own hardware, any driver should work fine and give better performance as newer ones get released.
Its hardware guys. There is no more debate, its hardware.
***and another thing. Ive never once removed the drivers. Ive always just run the installer and update. Never had a single issue and it always updates just fine. -
One thing more from my side I have installed clean windows 7 with only necessary drivers from cd and havent installed power for gear because windows handle everithing perfectly fine with its own performance profiles.
-
But drivers can cause many errors on hardware which is new and havent been considered under development, It can even fry gpu in some cases.
What i believe is that there is some minor error under production of 5870 mobility. And it affects only every 10nth gpu for exempel. But error is so minor that it not defies under original 9.12 driver which asus had at the time when they tested machines under final development. But again its clearly comming forward now afterwards with new drivers from ati.
Anyhow just my thoughts spoken loud here -
How could you explain some people can run any driver and others cant? Driver issue just doesnt fit so well than as a hardware fault...
-
i was getting gsod constantly with 10.6. Now that i'm back to factory default, cs:s runs without a hiccup -
apachehavok has a point, but I get gsod with 10.6 too, and not with the stock. I just hope Asus will release some new drivers.
-
and in others I am certain I will get at least one per hour
