    Hi everyone,

I recently installed Windows 8 Pro on my Asus G53 (Clean Install). All was going pretty well, until I realized that I couldn't adjust the brightness. It stays locked on the maximum.

I've tried installing Power4Gear, but it made no difference. I've changed power profiles, still no luck. I turned off "adaptive brightness" in the advanced power settings, and I still can't change the brightness.

By the way, the problem is the same if I use the Fn control keys to adjust the brightness, or if I use the sliders in Power Options.

As you can see from the screenshots, the sliders are at the minimum, but the brightness stays at max. brightmax.png brightmax2.png

maybe you are using some wrong driver for the FN key that overides
try to uninstall the ATK package (i think)
and try if you can adjust it with the windows driver (you should be able to)

    Still doesn't work.
I've uninstalled the ATK package and tried changing the brightness from control panel, but it doesn't work. One weird thing is that even though I uninstalled the ATK package (and did a restart), some Fn keys continued working like the wireless, and the brightness (even though it doesn't really changes it).

yes they should work by standard but not all of them
    i dont have idea
    try installing different Atk packages
i think the default brightnes driver is merged in the display driver

Could it be an issue with Power4Gear?

I installed it but it made no difference, so now it's uninstalled.

I've tried three different ATK packages. One of them was the latest one available for my laptop. The other two were made for Win 8, for another Asus laptop. The problem is still the same.

I'll try some more ATK packages later today.

I'd say go back to windows 7, microsoft hits the mark every other operating system. That's why xp keys are still sold today, vista is terrible (at least without sp1), and windows 7 is perfect pretty much right out of the box.

I don't really want to go back to Windows 7. The faster boot times alone make it worth the upgrade to Windows 8 imo. Moreover, the brightness issues are the only ones I've encountered so far. I guess I can live with it (or try another clean install of Win8).

No one else encountered this problem ? (on G73, G53, or any other Gs :) )

I've seen people fix this by uninstalling the Vid drivers and doing a clean install of them.

I read hp's are having this issue and you have to go read something in the registry when you have windows 7 installed, so you can then load windows 8 and change that specific registry value to match to get your brightness controls working. Though asus computers are a lot less finicky when it comes to fn keys and other media buttons. If everyone else is having this issue then i would guess modifying the registry value would fix your problem. I'll look in the history of my other computer at work and see if i can find the solution.

Also my windows 7 ultimate boots in 14 seconds (boot racer), i don't see a reason to upgrade to windows 8.

That actually did it. I thought it wouldn't since I had already tried going from 310.64 to 310.70 some weeks ago (by uninstalling 310.64 and then installing 310.70).
I installed the latest stable driver in the morning (306.97), and I can adjust the brightness again. Thank you very much Chastity, and thanks to everyone else who replied on my thread.

Edit : C4RN1 , I guess you were writing about this solution : The Ramblings of Adrynalyne: Fix Brightness Control for Windows 8 AMD SG Drivers
(I posted the link in case someone needs it)

Yup that's the one i was talking about. Looks like you just need to give the manufacturers some time to code for windows 8. Glad you got it figured out.

I believe the latest drivers from the Nvidia website would do the trick.

Try downloading the newest drivers, then running a full uninstall. -> Restart the laptop -> Install the new downloaded drivers -> Restart again.
