I just got my G73JH back from ASUS. I was having an overheating problem and they replaced the hard drive, MoBoard, Graphics Card, and Keyboard. Got it back and windows update would not work and I was having problems with the new ATI drivers. Sent it back again and they replaced the new hard drive. Now that I have it back, windows update works, but the only ATI driver and Catalyst control center I can get to work is dated december of 2009. When I try to update to the new ATI 12.1, all I get are problems. Doesnt matter if I uninstall everything before hand or try to upgrade over the old stuff, and I have updated MSoft .net framework as well (something I sa suggested.) When I run the express install it crashes to blue screen. If I do custom and try just the CCC to start once it installs I just get errors that it wont work. I can get the new 12.1 drive to solo install on custom, but then CCC wont work with it and in device manager if you try to upgrade it, it takes you back to the 2009 driver. I've tried several different ways. ASUS its not their problem since ati drivers and CCC is 3rd party. I am worried Ithe new video card is bad and will not be able to get it replaced before the warranty expires in a few days if this is something other than a software problem. Some of the errors I am getting depending on order of installtion of items are these:

Catalyst Control Center: Host Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working. Windows will close the program and inform you if there is a solution.

This was after I uninstalled the december 2009 CC and tried to solo install just the new CCC. As I said if I try to express install everything I just get blue screen of death.

Ive also seen errors about there not being a digital signature with the 12.1 CCC.

I'll post the other error when I get it to pop up again.

Either way, the 12.1 CCC will not work on this laptop. IS there a way to get an older version from december or november? I HAD THOSe working. I just cannot imagine having to use the ccc and drivers from 2009 as those seem to be the only ones available that work right now.

    HELP ANYONE???????????

Check the vbios version on your video card. Who knows, it might not be up to date. You can use GPU-Z to check what version you have.

I know how to do the normal cpu bios, and it is current. But no idea how to do the vbios on the vid card. How do I use GPU-Z? Is that a piece of software to download?

it is and I found it. downloading now

weird GPU-z shows a bios with numbers not even similar to numbers of what the bios from techpowerup (where i got gpu-z) shows it should be. not sure how to tell which bios is correct and or how to flash the gpu bios if needed.

even weirder, gpu-z shows my driver is atiumdag 8.683.0.0 (Catalyst 12.1), which makes no sense as the device manager shows it to be dated 12/17/2009. how can that be 12.1? and it still wont let me install the latest download 12.1 catalyst suite.

Looking at my C drive theres and AMD folder with ati stuff in it, plus ati folders in both c:/Programs and c:/Programs(x86). should there be stuff for catalyst in all three of those places. might need to uninstall again and delete all of these folders and try again. not sure. any other suggestions? any one else having similar troubles?

I actually also have this weird issue. I read on other places that a complete clean out of the drivers is supposed to help.
I could fix it for me with just installing drivers, reboot, install the rest.

Yes, a complete cleanup of the drivers could fix it. When you open CCC and check the software versions, what does it tell you, it's possible that you have the latest version of CCC, but you are still on the older drivers. CCC is only the UI for the drivers, the drivers are a separate piece of software.

I've done it all. Still cannot get the main download from ATI to run. But the version of CCC I have says its running 12.1 even though the date says 12/17/09. makes no sense. Did I mention I hate ATI? Will never own another one of their cards. Always have trouble with their drivers.

using the tool from this page
AMD Graphics Drivers & Software ? Download the latest drivers for your graphics products

get me this driver and software package: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...i-ccc-ati-drivers-g73-12-1-a.html#post8309214

but it will not install. However using the tool here: AMD Driver Autodetect

is what got me the version of CCC and the driver I am using.

when i try to install the other one, it says what I have is out of date, but the status page in CCC says it is the 12.1 driver, just with the bad date. who knows. anyone else have any ideas?

see it only shows or allows me to install the old CCC from 2009. but the driver says 12.1. go figure. In device manager it shows the driver as the 2009 version. ahh even though 12.1 the driver date there shows 12/17/2009 as well. still all the old crap. unbelievable.

    -----------------------------------
well I just tried a fresh install. Deleted all drivers, programs, etc, inclusing all folders left behind after uninstall. Turned off windows update, turned off find device drivers and made sure ONLY a basic VGA driver was installed. Ran the fresh install and this time it worked. Go figure. There must have been a folder somewhere I didnt deleted before or something. Not sure. But either way its working now. ATI still sucks and is a pain in the butt. NVidia for sure next time. Thanks for the helps.

Hey, I had the same problem with my G73jh BST7. It only worked with stock drivers, at least that's what I thought at the time. I never updated the vbios, or the mb bios and I never planned to do it so I thought that's one of the reason that the newer drivers don't work with my card. I stopped thinking about it for a few months until one time I saw here how many users were able to update their graphic cards to the last version without any problem. It made me angry that I can't do this (I'm in IT) and so many "newbs" can, so I uninstalled my driver and started installing every version of ati drivers starting with the last one. I don't know how many versions failed to install, but this one did (amd_catalyst_11.8_preview_driver_july_12.exe). After the succesfull install I started Far Cry 2 and it was fluid with everything maxed out, except aa. With the previous version it was fluid only with everything to high. I left it like that since I was too bored to update to the latest driver, until a few weeks ago when 12.1 came up. I uninstalled everything related to ati, then installed 12.1 and it worked perfectly, didn't even used driver sweeper or safe mode.
So, to sum up, download the latest version, run it, chose uninstall, select everything, restart, run the same installer and install. If it doesn't work, download the previous version and repeat. Or you cand try the version that worked for me, I'm sure you can find it.
    Good luck !
