I was just wondering, since we know the panel with the touchpad can be transplanted from the JW to JH to gain the better touchpad, if this was possible too.
I know for a fact, that the left USB 2.0 port is a separate chip, that is connected to the motherboard with a cable. Now im wondering if theres any such USB 3.0 chip that would use the same cable to connect to the motherboard and if it could even work...
Anyone ever found anything like that and do you think its possible it would work or does USB 3.0 only exist soldered on the motherboard and would the motherboard/bios even support a USB 3.0 chip if we got it and would it be able to make use of the extra speed?
The touchpad is a start, but if we could get this done, we would pretty much eliminate the advantages of the JW over the JH (not counting the GPU, which is just perfonal preference between ATI and Nvidia if you have a well pasted JH) ;).

Interesting concept. Too much trouble for many of us. However, if you want to come to the states and travel from region to region in a Winnebago performing these upgrades for the cost of parts plus a $50 labor fee per unit I'm sure many of us would take you up on it. For an extra $25 you could do a re-paste while you're inside. :)

    Cheers,

I like this idea. Personally I don't need USB 3.0 (yet) but I always like the idea of improving the capabilities of my devices. You never know when you'll find a reason to use it.

I'm game for giving it a go if you find a way for us to procure the palmrest portion of the JW laptop! I don't mind paying for it, but I don't know any shop or shoppe that will take my money and sell me one.

I am not 100% sure if this will work.
Most probably the bios need to be modified. On my N71JQ, there are options in the bios that are related to USB 3.0.

Ya i thought the Bios might need to support this specifically... Ill let you know if i can find some USB 3.0 chip. If its cheap enough i might want to try it. First though i really want a JW palmrest, but i still havent been able to get a JW serial number :(.

That sounds like two very cool upgrades. One of which I might be able to talk my girl into letting me buy. The other one...not so much. If someone finds out the JW touchpad serial, that'd be awesome.

Its not something you usually give to other people... I can imagine that the owners probably dont want some part on their service record they never actually needed just to help someone they dont know out.

Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will take too hi-res of a picture when they are selling one...
If I had a JW I'd tell you the serial, but I almost always buy used or refurbished so I wouldn't have much to lose.
If only there was a way to track the part back to the mfg. I suspect it's the same part from the same supplier, with different buttons. The part number is probably one or two digits off from our JH touchpad part numbers. Maybe that's a pipe dream.

Just an update on the touchpad; The upper panel does NOT include the touchpad, so do not try to order that, you need to order the touchpad separately.
I wouldnt count on it being the same part, since as its listed on AsusParts, there are already 2 different touchpad boards for the JH.

Now i got a reply from AsusParts saying exactly the opposite as my techs; they will have the JW top cover on their site soon, it will cost only around 45€, and it WILL include the touchpad board and buttons.
The part number for the part theyll sell that i was given is: 13GN0U1AP031-1.
They also added the image of the part and it indeed included the touchpad and buttons :).

So for anyone interested in doing the same JW to JH touchpad transplant this is good news, since AsusParts is one of the cheaper parts resellers and they dont need a serial for you to order from them ;).

I'm all over it just for a better touchpad with two buttons. If the USB port happens to work at 3.0 speed well that's just bonus. If the USB port doesn't work at all, I'll have to think about it.

Ill make a new thread complete with photos once i get my hands on a top cover and do the transplant. Please consider this thread closed and dont reply anymore, since its only encouraging flaming and is no longer constructive.
