Im an owner of the G60jx and would like to find a bluray drive to replace the dvd drive in this.

I would assume they are standard chasis and would fit in most notebooks?

The lowest price i found was an LG CT21N but its kinda pricey still..

Anyone else sportin a bluray drive in theirs yet? What model? and what'd you pay for it?

I have BC-5500S drives in the G73 and an external housing for my Mac. I've used others as well. bought all on ebay for under $75 each, however, it looks like around $100 is the norm right now. You just need to swap the faceplate and add Blu-ray player software and you're good to go.

    Cheers,

Can anyone describe to me the faceplate? Some minor things like the annoying logo bothers me. Is the "DVD ROM" logo a sticker or it it embed on the faceplate? So I know if it can be taken out.

Looks like it might be a small sticker on the G73. I don't want to dig at mine too much and if I removed it, I don't have a small BD-ROM sticker. On my G72 it's definitely part of the faceplate.

    Cheers,

    Newegg.com - ASUS 6X BD-ROM 8X DVD-ROM 24X CD-ROM USB External Slim External BD Combo Model SBC-06D1S-U

Got this from another thread, can't remember where. It's an external, but it's really not hard to open it up and take the drive out.

Using it for my G73 and it works fine. Put the original DVD drive back in the casing and it also works perfect as external drive!

The faceplate isn't a problem to switch out, just be careful and don't pry it off so you don't break anything. Unfortunately it is a sticker on the G73, and I also didn't want to remove it, since I didn't have a bluray sticker...

Where on ebay have you found it for $75? The cheapest I've found is like low to mid 100's.

And a few others before these. It appears such deals are hard to come by now.

    Cheers,

Edit: As you can see, I just buy them as they show up so I have some stock in case of failure or purchase of new machines. I have a stockpile of removed DVDRWs now! :)

these are expensive laptops why would i damage it by over heating it and playing games? These laptops including the g73 have overheating issues. While they may improve a bit with each new model they still overheat.

What does this have to do with inexpensive Blu-Ray drives? Also, you do realize many ASUS laptops are designed for gaming and the newest, G73 runs cooler than most.

They are about $100 to $125 more expensive.

Nope, the g73 is one of the few i7 laptops that doesn't have heat throttling issues.

For anyone that needs to swap out the bezel, there's a youtube vid (not created by me) in my sig that I found to be very helpful with my G73. It would apply to any laptop, but the video shows an ASUS.

    Happy swapping!

Does anyone know where to buy the bluray sticker for the ASUS faceplate? My dvd rom one peeled off and now its just blank. I've seen pictures of it so I know it exists, just don't know where to find it.

    Vmac,

Maybe contact your reseller and see if they can get ahold of their rep at Asus. I bet they can get you another.

Also on the topic of cheap blue ray drives anyone looking for specials PM or email me and I let you know my "thoughts" :)
