Hi everyone, Until recently when I got into PC gaming I was a console gamer (...yes I know  ) and I loved (still love) pwning people on CoD4 and MW2 with my beloved Tritton AX 720 5.1 surround sound headphones. The problem is that I have read that it is impossible for these headphones+amp box to be used on the G73, so for future gaming (new CoDs/Battlefields) I have to buy PC-specific surround sound headphones. So what are the cheapest 5.1 headphones that will work on the G73? Thanks :D

For a point of record, I use ABS FX-8's. They work pretty darn decently and are based on the 8 speaker design format (true 5.1 while using software decoding to produce 7.1), though are a bit lacking in the low-end. They use USB for power and audio so no other cables are required.

Now, I know the Tritton AX 720 and I've gotta know, why is it you cannot use it with your G73? Either use the USB input or use a mini-Toslink-to-Toslink cable/converter and connect that instead. Especially since the box has a power input.

How cheap do you mean by "Cheap"?

The best "Virtual" surround headphones are in my opinion the Logitech G35s, I found the virtual 7.1 sound to be excellent, and you can get them for $65 when the go on sale at either newegg.com or logitech.com (when damaged box), check techbargains.com periodically or setup a deal alert to find out when it is on sale.

If you want to use your 720s with the G73 you can buy a Soundblaster X-Fi HD 1095 USB soundcard which supports Dolby Digital Live, then you can use optical output on the soundcard to connect to your 720s.

I've done a lot of research on this. The "best" headphones is a personal choice as we all like different things in headphones.

If you want to look at some other options you can look at this post....

Wow thanks for that suggestion ValkerieFire! I guess I wasn't aware of the fact that the G73 needed an external sound card. Its probably because i'm a noob when it comes to anything concerning audio reproduction lol. Now I have one more question: Do I have to buy THAT specific external sound card or will others work? Again I don't know what to look for since i'm a noob at dolby digital and TOSlink connectors and whatnot.

You don't "need" an external soundcard with the G73, I am not using one (but I may someday), but if you want to use your ax720s you will need an external card that does Dolby digital live, the only USB ones I know of are the Asus U1 and the X-fi I mentioned above.

Honestly it is a rather complex setup and you may be better off with something else. What is your budget?

Actually, after thinking about it, that external sound card seems like the perfect solution since it is a lot cheaper than say the logitech g35's. Yes it may be a complex setup, but im used to it after using my ax 720's and amp box and ps3 and the torrent of wires lol :D . So I think i'll go for the external sound card option because I love my ax720's and can use them with a variety of things (unlike g35's) including ipod and xbox/ps3. Also I was planning to upgrade to the ax pro's sometime soon for ps3 black ops and mw2 to get TRUE 5.1 surround! Also if I get this sound card I can use it with my lappy! Yaay! :) Thank you again ValkerieFire for your help!
