Would anyone care to clarify where exactly the vents are for the Asus G73? I've read that it draws from the keyboard, so the top, which I highly doubt. I've seen the video by Asus themselves, it says it draws from the front, yet I don't see any crevices or opening on my G73 that shows it does. Then I get people saying they just decided that it does draw from the bottom...

SO what's the case? I'm asking this for pure purpose of determining whether lifting the laptop up or getting a cooler for it might good for it.

As for GPU temps, when I play borderlands on max settings, I constantly hit and peak at 97C according to HWinfo. CPU stays at a a fine 64C~. At idle, the GPU hovers around 62C, CPU around 45C.

Lastly, how "loud" is loud for you guys? Many reviews say this laptop is whisper quiet or something of the sort, but I can clearly hear the fans running. Maybe not exceedingly loud, but I can hear it and I have no way to measure how loud it is and compare it... so i'm just wondering here if mine might be faulty.

There's been a few people here on the forums that has reported using a cooler helps reduce their temps. I'd suspect the main intakes are the ones located on the bottom of the unit over the ram modules and part of the GPU. There's also a series of holes underneath the keyboard on the top right which appear to aid the air intake on the right fan, but since the keyboard would be blocking these "intakes" I'm not sure how efficient this intake area would be compared to the ones on the bottom of the laptop.

For the loudness, each individual's tolerance will differ. As long as it doesn't bother you, I'd leave it at that. Measuring the loudness of laptop fans usually requires a sound level sensor which not all review sites use. If you can't put a number in decibels on the loudness of your fan, it'll be futile to ask for someone else's loudness levels.

Yeah, I kind of assumed that it had to be the ones on the bottom where the ram is.

notebookcheck.net uses a sound meter for their g73 to check for noise.

Also, I thought the intake was under the screen? Which explains why it gets quite a bit hotter (than one would expect from just having the screen down) when running in clamshell mode....

I can hear mine when I'm trying to fall asleep with it on. Otherwise, it's about the same as my desktop (which is to say, quite quiet)

I too thought the intake was under the screen. There are holes back there and I thought the vents underneath were passive.

Regardless of where the intake is located, my concern about using the laptop with the lid closed is the potential for damaging the screen.

Whether or not there is some intake on top. Using a cooler on the bottom is completely worth it. I made a simple, ghetto cooler with some old desktop fans and it cooled the G73 from 89c to 80c. So i'd say it definitely makes a difference, my cooler isnt exactly quiet though.

But, yeah, pretty much whether or not you see a 9c drop like I did, you should get some sort of drop as long as the cooler fans match up with the holes on the bottom of the G73(which is very hard considering its pretty much center and then the CPU one above it.)

I agree, I've said this several times, I use a 1 inch diameter rod of stainless steal place under the center of the laptop and noticed a temperature drop. So, just raising the back off of a flat surface helps. This has the added advantage of allowing easy rotating without pulling the rubber feet off. Although, a cooler would be better. ;)
