hello,
first Kalim Thanx for the great guide, sort of like the bible for most of us.
i have a question i pre- ordered the ASUS G53JW-A1 and i have a retail oem dvd for my desktop. i plan on installing a fresh OS using this dvd and entering the cd key provided with the laptop. is this an option ?
1- using the oem dvd
2- using the cd-key with it
3- where would i obtain a driver and utilities cd, since i did not recieve one and i believe the link provided is for the G73 laptops
i am kind of a newb to stuff but i try to read alot. and i noticed you have been mia, i hope you are well.
Again Thanx for this wonderful guide , glad i found it -
) using my desktop OEM Win7 disk and used the ABR utility to retrive and install the factory cdkey, its super easy, the rest you can go with Kalims great guide.
-
thanks for your reply but i would like to know
if i install using the oem win 7 dvd why not just grab the cdkey from the bottom of the laptop?
as for drivers and utilities turns out i will be receiving one after all -
-
Your oem cd will work IF it is the same version of windows. So if your G53 comes with Windows 7 Home, you will need a Windows 7 Home disk (not a ultimate disk). Or you could burn your own disk which will install any version. If you want to do that, use the link in the tutorial to free legal win 7 download.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
Also as above the ABR utility is well worth your time. There are links to abr in the above link. You only need to save our activation once (as long as you save the files in a safe place like a USB key), and you can reinstall windows 7 more easily in the future. -
I'm still wondering why this isn't a sticky. It's a great guide.
But I guess it's not imperative for everyone to do a clean install on their computers. -
you could use that but would still have to call microsoft for activation......so this saves the call and ......
-
thanx guys u were really helpful, ill prob go with software for both my desktop and laptop.
this should really be a sticky and thanx again. ill keep following the post.
i know this might not be the place but any1 know if the NZXT cryo S is a good fit for this laptop?
also i made sure that both laptop and desktop are windows 7 home 64bit so i "should" be fine -
Would this version of windows Work with the serial key sticker on the back of my Asus G73jh?
-
which verdion of windows???Js make sure u download the type that the key corresponds to.......
-
Also see this... -
OK, there is a LOT of information between this post and the G73JW owners lounge to try and process in a very short period of time so I apologize if I missed this but I promise I've read almost everything posted but it's a blur.
I got mine on Monday, had the correct Windows 7 ISO downloaded and ready to go, put my new SSD in, set it up, installed of the iso disc and am up and running flawlessly.
Only problem is that on the computer information screen it is giving me an invalid key notice with a days countdown. Can I call in to validate since the hardware changed? How do I fix this?
Thanks ahead of time!

Assuming you still have your original windows install on your original HDD, you can use this program ( http://directedge.us/content/abr-beta-with-windows-7-support), which is linked in the first post of the http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html thread. Boot your original HDD, backup your registration using ABD. Then save the files to USB key. Reinstall your ssd, then retore your activation with the files you saved on the USB key. That will activate windows for you. Or you can call Microsoft and activate via phone.
-
i dont get it.. pls help.. this is my first ever reformat or clean install
i dont wanna buy new windows 7. so i wanna save my existing windows 7 or also know as EOM? or factory installed right??..
@kalim
can i skip those in the introduction and go to the "THE CHOICE?"
i really dont understand....what is the phone call thing?? about windows 7 -
Kalim doesn't respond here anymore.
All you need is to download a Win 7 ISO for Home Premium, or an Universal, and install using the key off the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. You can find the Universal disc image on my Resource link below. Download both part 1 and 2, extract the .iso and burn to a dvd blank. -
wow thanks for the VERY FAST REPLY...
another question what about what kalim said
"This is a complete walk-through for doing a clean Windows 7 install. This information is based on the ASUS G73JH-X1 laptop which includes one "Windows 7 Recovery Media for Windows 7 Products" and one "Driver & Utility Ver 1.0" disc. For the purpose of this guide they will be referred to as the "Recovery" and "Driver and Utility" discs, respectively. Your setup and needs might be slightly different than mine, so these are only suggestions. It is strongly recommended that you read this in it's entirety before proceeding.
"
i cannot really understand this??
or can i just skip this and go directly to "The Choice"(<-- the first one in the table of contents) -
You can either:
1) Restore your system to the way it was before using the Recovery Discs you made when you got your system, or from the Recovery partition on your main hdd.
2) Use a standard Win7 Install disc to do a fresh install of the OS, and using the Driver and Application disc to restore any Asus apps you want, and drivers you cannot find updates for online. -
so the option 1 is easier? coz i dont need to find any driver? -
you would still need to update the drivers to get optimal performance and to address issues with games or applications, but yes, restoring to factory defaults will have all the stock drivers in place. You will still need to restore your personal applications and games.
-
thank you very much!
-
I don't know if I did something wrong but the factory disk created by the backup software automatically also installed all bloatware. I actually expected that, but since I didn't read about that in this guide, I gave it a try.
Well, I am now downloading the clean iso of win7. Hopefully posting "thanks" in this thread tomorrow! -
I referred to this when I recovered my G73Jh. Great job!
-
i did it!! thanks a lot... just need to back up and try to play games...
-
would this process be similar for my ASUS N71jq-A1?
-
I have g73jw
IMSM driver dont exist on this model.
Should i skip this or take this drover form the g73jh model and install on my g73jw ? -
Couple random questions.
I've had my laptop for about 8 months now and did a fresh install with an intel 80 gig then. I'd like to do another fresh install as I've installed/deleted a lot of programs.
I downloaded the driver cd as I can't find mine. I used a friends Win7 disc to do a clean install. But I don't have that anymore so I guess I'll get the win7 iso.
Couple questions.
I've yet to upgrade the bios...at all. Does it matter if I do that before or after? Should I get the 209 bios or which ones should I upgrade to?
I can get the twin turbo mode on/off but how do I even know it's working? What does it do? Do you guys even use it and is it ok to always leave it on?
Should I upgrade my ATI drivers and if so where do I get them from? Th ATI site is a pain to navigate.
So if I download and burn a windows 7 iso disc since I never got the recovery CDs. What do I do with the partions with an intel SSD? I don't quite fully understand them. I understand it splits the drive and such. Right now my 2nd HD is split into 250/250 and then I have my intel ssd drive. I want to fully wipe it and do a fresh and clean win7 install using the ISO. What's the process and what are my options or partions, etc?
Thanks a lot in advance! -
1) You should upgrade the bios before doing any installations.
2) No reason not to be using 211
3) Twin Turbo doesn't work very well with i7's. Intel TurboBoost is a better solution. Keep Twin Turbo off.
4) ATI Mobility drivers can be gotten from AMD's website. Please update your vBIOS first before using current drivers to avoid a GSOD issue. (see sig links for that, scroll up for instructions)
5) You can backup what files you want, and then wipe all the partitions. This will also wipe the Recovery Partition. You can then use single partitions on the2 HDDs. -
Thanks for the response.
I'd like to completely wipe my main SSDboot (C) drive and leave my 2nd one that is split into two partions untouched. Anything special or just do a normal format/clean install of windows 7? -
When you run the Win7 install, you can delete the old partitions and install to an empty hdd.

Would anyone have the slightest idea why I can't seem to install the Win7 x64 Atheros 1.0.0.29 LAN driver on my clean install of the JW? The Atheros drivers from the CD and Asus site are rejected with an error window which says nothing but "Atheros LAN Driver", 1.0.0.27 does the same, and trying to update the Network Controller via device manager says no matching drivers found. Since I did just get a replacement mobo in mine, I downloaded the Intel, Realtek, and JMicron drivers as well in the unlikely event they switched chips in my mobo revision. No dice. Now I might have to restore the system to factory default just to confirm what driver is on there. If it is indeed the Atheros, I'll be damned if I can figure out why it's not installing... Also posted in the ROG forum. Thanks.
Update: ARGH!!!!! Just completed the restore and now, for some odd reason, the Network Controller (which worked just fine before the original wipe) is still coming up in device manager as uninstalled!! So now I have neither LAN nor wireless until I can figure out why. "General" tab claims drivers aren't installed with the old "Code 28".
Update 2: Gonna keep investigating. Apparently I can't get on the net via a Knoppix DVD either. it's highly improbable that just reinstalling Windows would have killed a network controller, but I'm getting stumped. -
pop open the bottom panel and check what unit you have in there.
-
Will do so shortly. So far I've reinstalled my 6200 Intel drivers, which took care of the Network Controller listing as missing. But I still have no LAN connection appearing, though nothing else problematic in Device Manager. So either it's not connected or dead. No lights when I plug in an ethernet cable...

Im on the edge of the clean installcliff. However, I'm not sure if I should jump before the windows 7 sp1 is comin out, to save me some trouble fetching old fixes, or jump right away, since the SP1 will take a while/won't be that good?
-
I wouldn't fret over SP1. It's out already, and takes about 10-15 min to install.
-
-
STICKY! Would be helpful.
-
I personally would go directly to SP1, but not until it's officially pushed out by MS. If I wasn't a beta tester, I wouldn't waste time installing the release candidate (RC) version either, as these can sometimes change and/or require uninstalling when the official release comes.
Of course, I may have missed a memo and it's really out today, in which case - never mind -

Hey, I just did a clean install using Win-7 of my G73JH.
I didn't have a restore disk, and had to install a new hard drive so couldn't make any. I installed about the same drivers Kalim recommended, but am having audio problems.
When I go to support.asus.com Downloads, for the G73JH Win 7 64-bit, they have 3 audio drivers (2 Realtek, 1 Audigy). When installing, they say "No supported hardware found!"
The Win7 default audio driver does work, but will not mute [rear speakers keep playing], and has some volume level problems... very irritating.
Any idea where I can get a driver to work??
Thanks!
Asus G73JH-RBBX05
Audio: "EAX Advanced HD 4.0" (thats what sticker says
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0269&SUBSYS_10431373&REV1000 (thats what Device Manager says) -
I guess you didn't realize how outdated his info is

Greetings,
When I first got my Asus G73JW, I went through the steps to perform a clean windows 7 install.
That went well, and all has been well since.
Until today...
I've been trying to run a downloaded program and it won't run, complaining about missing the MSSTDFMT.DLL file...
This file is present on my regular gaming machine (in syswow64) which also runs Windows 7 64-bit home premium. It is not present on my G73JW.
I tried to follow instructions for downloading it from dll-files.com (which I really didn't want to do, but anyway...) After I downloaded it I ran regsvr32 against it. It said that it registered the service, but there was an error. I don't have the error (it's on my other machine).
Nevertheless, the program I want to run still won't execute.
Has anyone else run into this particular issue after having performed a clean install? I'm assuming that this is why it's not working for me.
Thanks.
- s.west
Never mind about the regsvr32 error... I didn't run cmd as administrator.
I just re-ran the regsvr32 cmd and it worked. Now the program I want to run executes correctly.
My other question still stands, and I'm wondering whether anyone else ran into a similar problem after the clean install.

so recovery disk is same as the installer of the windows 7
-
A recovery disk is meant to RETURN the computer to a certain state. Factory recovery disks will usually return the computer to a like new condition with all the bloat wear etc. "Home made" recovery disks will return the computer to whatever configuration the creator of the disks intended.
A Windows 7 install disk only installs Windows 7, it does not install any other programs or enhancements. Many people prefer to do a "fresh/clean" install using a Windows 7 disk because it skips all the bloat wear allowing you to control what is on your computer. Another advantage is you only install the drivers you want, so a "clean" install is a good way to prevent driver conflicts or issues. -
so what kalim says to this statement that he refer recovery disk as a windows 7 Burned ISO?
so on This walkthrough can i still use the Universal Windows 7 i download and the Driver from Chastity Links....
and use the Product key at the bottom of the g73jh? -
Yes, you can activate Win 7 Home Premium with the key on the license tag.

ty chasty!

Have a new G73JH. Did a few mods out of the box - replaced CPU with i7-940 (nice!), 16GB low-latency RAM, 2 WD7500BPKT 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache drives - and a clean install of Win 7 Enterprise 64-bit. This is the nicest laptop I have ever seen. Having one issue - I have 3 passwords required - 1.)BIOS 2.)Hard Drive 3.)OS login. From the time of power up, the keyboard backlight is on at first, but from the time I am prompted for the first password to after logging into Windows - the keyboard is off, until the driver loads at login, then it comes on again. Using this in the dark is a real pain, and this was the primary reason for getting this laptop. Any suggestions would be appreciated, have tried everything I can think of. Thanks in advance -
