I was curious instead of buying another monitor for dual screen and multi-tasking, is it possible to use a HDTV with HDMI ports for dual screening?

For example have e-mails open on one screen and a show playing, while I'm typing up an essay on my laptop screen.

Not sure if this is possible or is the only choice I have is to buy a monitor?

Any help would be nice thanks!

Any HDMI display will work but TVs are usually not as clear as monitors, fine for video though.

Aww man I was considering playing like hearthstone on it.

Any suggestions for a nice 25 inch + screen that's cheap and nice?

There are loads of decent wide angle monitors out there for cheap these days :) Hearthstone should be ok, it's more games with a lot of detail in them that struggle.

I might just stick with the HDTV then.

Meaker do you have any suggestions for a nice cheap monitor that is wide angle by any chance?

Thanks again for the response man!

I don't know what deals are available in your area at the moment, I suggest you look up reviews of panels on offer.

Just found this monitor model for $220.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236348

Does this sound a good deal? It has nothing wrong with it.

or should I just stick to a 37 inch HDTV screen as a dual screen?

I'm mainly multi-tasking to e-mails, youtube videos, Hearthstone really. Maybe some League of Legends too.

The extra width it certainly nice for putting things side by side :) Not a bad deal at all.

I have used 32 inch TVs for dual-screening with a lot of happy success. The quality loss I experience is minimal- but I've never gone much higher than 32 inch. That said, you can usually pick up a 32inch for 100-150 bucks off craigslist, 180 off amazon (Last time I checked).

The argument someone posed is that the VGA is better- but honestly, it's not. VGA tends to look worse than HDMI, and doesn't carry audio.

    Happy hunting.

It really depends what you use it for, for reading text TVs can be pretty bad.

Do you already own the TV you wanted to hook up as a second monitor? If so go ahead and hook it up and see how you feel about the picture quality.
