Hello, wanted in one single post to tell my experience of cooling the G73. This thread for others to post how they keep their G73 cool while surfing the net, video watching, work or gaming.

    Xeven's v2 Asus vBios with 1.05v mod

I created two Profiles in Catalyst, one for performance (PowerPlay Performance) and one for Idle (PowerPlay Battery mode) with hot keys so I can switch quickly between the two.

I have set Catalyst AI to Advanced. This supposedly means drivers are optimized for texture rendering etc a little better with minimal detail loss. I found GPU works more efficiently with temps lower.

For gaming I have OverDrive set to 800 Core, 940 Memory.

I use the Thermaltake Massive23 ST
    - This cooler uses a large 230mm fan to shove cool air up the bottom of the G73
    - I have found having the G73 elevated on top of the cooler works best
    - I bought a package of pink erasers from CVS, and cut them in half, so I have four. The rubber erasers elevate the G73 and keep it from moving around.

Overall I have found this setup best.

My IDLE temps with 72F ambient temp - 44C DispIO, 49C MemIO and 43C Shader
    My Performance Temps with 72F - 75C DispIO, 83C MemIO, 74C Shader
Games like Crysis 82C Core, 93C MemIO.

Try Furmark to see how high the temps get!

The plastic glossy trim on the NC3000 is a deal-breaker for me. Not that it should affect the cooling efficiency, but a fingerprint magnet material isn't my first choice when it comes to consumer products.

why not just use AMD GPU Clock tools to underclock the GPU? I can attain lower clocks with than the powerplay option, and I idle at around 47-50C without a cooler.

That would be an option as long as the user won't mind the drop in gaming performance. I'd say investing in a laptop cooler would probably be best and if the OP doesn't mind voiding his warranty, replacing the TIM with a better quality paste would help with the temps.

My experience in keeping my G73jh-bb05 in a nutshell...

I use it on my lap playing games and use the wrist pad as a mouse pad... It runs cool in 74-77 degrees F ambient air... I do absolutely nothing else to keep it cool other than not playing it directly in the sun.. no cooler necessary at the moment.

I would suggest lots and lots of copper and lots and lots of drilling.

    What?

I'm doing the same thing as Ziddy, and am in a hot office and my laptop is sitting at 48-50C for the 3 sensors for the GPU.

The problem with using AMD GPU Clock tool is that it doesn't stick on boot; you have to manually do it and it doesn't always work, it fails with a GSOD sometimes for me. Overall I really am happy with this solution.

I posted one way to have AMD GPU Clock Tool set your GPU clocks at bootup. You can find the instructions here.

Reviews I read say it's not very effective. I'd look for a portable air conditioner instead and prop the back of the laptop to let air in that way instead. I used to remember ads for those personal air conditions small enough to cool your neck/face.

Yeah, anybody can drop anything in their startup group but I've already mentioned other reasons why I don't like using AMD clocktool. Also doesn't play nice with Powerplay.

I was mentioning why I didn't like using AMDGPUClock tool. My settings are sticking fine. :)
