Just got a G73JH and I have some questions:

I chose to hide the desktop icons, but - I have to click twice to get it to register and then everytime I reboot, they reappear. This is not a problem on my desktop. How do I get them to stay hidden?

Similarly, the icons in the taskbar (WiMax,etc.) are still there even though I chose to hide them. What am I missing?

The card reader will not read SD HC cards. Is there a way to upgrade or replace it with one that does?

    Thanks in advance.

Best I can tell the readers are SDHC compatible but every ASUS model I have had my hands on the reader was complete crap. Only actual complaint i have on the G50 is the reader and its one of a few complaints I have with the U50F. When I got myne originally my SanDisk cards would work but my PNY would not. At this point nothing works in it except for maybe a second or two.

EDIT - Just got an 8GB PNY to read in myne, freaking miracle. Had to confirm but yeah i dont like the readers in ASUS laptops they all seem to be crap.

desktop icons reappear after restart - Microsoft Answers
This thread may be some help. I can confirm that I do not have power4gear installed and I do not have the problem with icon reappearing.

    Its Power4Gear's settings.

Launch Power Options > Asus P4G Power Settings > Hide Desktop Icons > Enable.

    the reader is working fine
just don't install any drivers ... use windows generic
    becouse
when i have installed alcor card reader i could only read my card once and then when i wanted to read it again i had to restart the machine ...
but with the generic driver i don't have that problem
i can eject and put it how much i want without restarting

Well uninstalling power4 did the trick for the icons. As far as the card reader is concerned, the drivers are generic microsoft but no joy with anything other than vanilla SD.

Plugged in a card reader and it seems to work but it is quirky.
