Ok, so I decided to upgrade from 10.8 mobility cats to 10.10 last night. I uninstalled old driver, rebooted safe mode, ran driver sweeper and CCleaner. Rebooted back into Normal Windows 7 64-bit and installed 10.10and rebooted.

Clean install of the drivers. I launched Civilization V afterward and played for a bit, but I noticed now my video fan speeds up and gets louder than it did before. If I put my hand in the back exhaust, I can feel it pumping out more heat obviously.

I never re-pasted my video card, because I didn't want to void warranty or worry myself if I made a mistake. I used to rip apart customer's Dell laptops and replace all sorts of hardware, but I'm chicken to touch my baby Asus. :)

So did the new drivers change the fan speeds? Have I always had this much heat, and it's now getting rid of it more efficiently, or am I producing more heat because of the driver?

Ambient temp and humidity differences, driver that does more work on the games you're playing, etc....who cares? Do you have a reason to worry? If your machine's components are operating within their thermal design specifications than just enjoy it! :)

I'm not really worried. It's just annoying to hear the fan spin up, then down, then up, then down.

wouldn't know any ccc that changes the settings of the fans... thats more somethin for the BIOS. As for your temps, what are they exactly? use msi afterburner or amd gpu clock tool to check your temps while ingame. If they hit 90C or more, I strongly suggest you get your repaste done.

My temps seem fine. I'm at 57-58C idle and was at 80-82C running Civ V. I noticed my fan speed didn't move from 30% though, but it seemed like it got louder. Could it possible be another internal fan? I wouldn't think so, since it's only when playing a 3D game.

It seems like my idle temp is lower now. About 52 to 54 according to GPU-Z.

Fan % is not reported correctly by BIOS. You can however get the fan rotational speed.

That was using GPU-Z. First time I cared to monitor temps on my laptop.
