I own one but since moved on. It was great around the time right before the witcher 2 released...after that, even a stable OC of the 5870m wasn't cutting it for such games.
Im sure it could run certain recent games fairly well such as Dishonored or XCOM only due to them not being graphic-intensive..but other than that, in games like Far Cry 3 or even the Crysis 3 beta, im sure the 5870m is damn near obsolete unless you like playing in low settings..
Im just curious if people actually found out a way to put a more recent mobile card into a G73 or are the majority of G73 users here seriously still on the 5870m...
-
Mine isn't really in use anymore, simply ebcause I use my M6700 and I got a gaming desktop in the mean time.
-
HD 5870 is the same performance as desktop HD 5770/6770 so it is capable of playing newer games even now...
My friend is still gaming on his HD 5870m and it still doing fine at 720p . -

Some people put a 7970m into their g73.
-
People are definitely still gaming on their G73s but no way are they maxing out current non-graphic intensive games. Also playing at 900p isn't as taxing as 1080p. Right now the G73JH is a pretty low-tier gaming laptop. It will get the job done with older games and SOME recent games and yes it will play ALL games but the most recent ones from this year having to play at LOW settings and even lower (if possible...) if trying to play in 1080p.

My Asus still handles games pretty well, at 1600x900 (native resolution) and High/Very High settings (without AA, or SSAO/HBAO).
Just recently finished Max Payne 3, Hitman Absolution, now playing Risen 2.
But I'm starting looking for replacement (maybe something with new AMD HD8xxx). -
I pretty much stopped touching Asus G73JW after I installed a GTX680M in the Clevo P150EM I later on bought.
-
Still using mine everyday with the stock 5870! Game and work on it daily for hours, running great knock on wood! Just installed Farcry 3, runs great at 1600x900 (native) and med/high... did just install an SSD and that has been a nice little bump in snappiness.
Haven't run across a game yet that didnt run totally satisfactorily... and I play just about everything out there from Witcher 2, Flight Sims, racing, Hitman Absolution, FC3, Dishonored, MP3 etc... haven't had to run anything low yet, mostly medium-high across the board.
Has been my longest used laptop yet... Sager 4870, G51 and Toshiba SLI 205 lasted about a year each satisfactorily... ie still ran fine but performance was beginning to be an issue... G73 so far is still not at that point so hard to justify retiring her.
I can't help but think the aging consoles and slowed graphical requirements have helped matters... but yep she stills runs great! -
I was still using my g73sw daily (8-12 hours per day) until I bought a g75vw-bbk5 (oem win8 install) last week.
after I saw the specs and played with it I couldn't pass it up.
with the exception of not being able to update the wifi card without tearing down the laptop I am VERY pleased with the upgrade.
oh and I have a g73sw-bst6 for sale btw.... win 8, ms office 2010 and adobe cs6 all installed at no charge. officially licensed. -
I bought my G73JH back in April or so 2011, used. About $850, I think? I game, but don't consider myself a hardcore gamer. It was a Best Buy model I upgraded with an Intel X25M SSD, matte 1080p display and a second HDD caddy(deleting the optical drive I don't really use anyway). Bumped the RAM up to 8GB later, still considering 16GB just to max it out.
I'm handling Far Cry 3 on pretty high settings at native resolution just fine, and that's going out via HDMI to an external 1080p monitor. Skyrim(yes it's a year old but I'm still playing it) at pretty much max settings. Most of my other titles are older but obviously I'm able to run them without any issues whatsoever. For what I'm using the machine for I don't see any reason to upgrade. I'm not exactly swimming in cash right now and I haven't found anything in the price/performance range that I'd like better.
My chief complaints are minor and mostly concern ports and build quality. I would have liked having an ExpressCard slot and maybe eSATA. The touchpad has pretty much flaked out, but I use an external mouse since I really don't like touchpads anyway. The keyboard is mushy and I don't like using it for marathon writing sessions(I'll use my ThinkPad for that sort of work anyway). The performance makes up for those minor cons, though. -
According the GPU benchmarks at notebookcheck, the 5870M lies between the 460m and 560m. So it's performance should still be fairly relevant.
The 560m is only last gen and my 460m overclocking runs most games on med-high settings on 1080p.
The 720qm might be showing it's age though, but that can be fixed with overclocking. -
Yeah, the 720qm is starting to show it's age, even my 920xm can't compete with my 3720qm. I can OC the 920xm for intensive stuff up to 2.7GHz, but the 3720qm in my M6700 runs at 3.4GHz has better performance clock for clock and runs cooler.

Well, I don't game as much on it as I used to. There was a time when my G73JH was my only machine and I had to do everything in it. Since then I have built me one or two gaming desktops.
I still use it for coding. That is, the G73 became a "work machine" and the desktop is my "gaming machine". Nevertheless, I run some games on the G73, just not new ones. Mostly indies, SC2 and WoW. Oh, and almost anything I got on GoG; they're there so if I got an itch to play something casually while working or away from home, I can entertain myself for a while. -
I sold my G73 and I bought G75 with gtx670
-
It's about 14% faster than the GTX670M and with a lot of OC headroom.
-
-
As far as performance I really have no issues at all with the G73... that was always my struggle with replacing it... for the money it's still tough to beat the 5870 in it!
-
Bought mine in 04/2010, and still runs my games well. Can't complain.

I bought mine on July 2010 and it's still good enough for my everyday tasks. It's even good as new! It's still with its stock parts and nothing was ever upgraded. I run VMWare Workstation or Oracle VirtualBox for programming on a Linux environment, I run 3 browsers at around 50-60 tabs in total. Games that I still play with this beast are StarCraft 2 (most of the time), Diablo 3, Total War: Shogun 2, H.A.W.X and some CoD MW2 and MW3. It's starting to show its age so sometimes I have to crank up graphics settings on high or medium.
By the way, hello ChastityIt's been a while since I saw you post here again. I'm glad you're back

I really wish asus would use a standard MXM slot for their models, their machines would introduce an interesting 4th party to the proceedings as their design can be very good.

It's quite determined to go their own way on design but it does tend to make them sluggish to respond and limit their options.

Yep, an Overclocked SW is still my primary machine, thanks to an RMA with Chastity.
That said, it is definitely showing it's age, and I'm actively looking into building a new desktop. -
I play dota 2, starcraft 2, CS:GO and a bunch of other games mostly at high settings, I'm not much of an fps guy so maybe that helps extend the lifetime of this computer.
The only thing that's broken is the battery, but to be perfectly honest, I've never used it on the go anyway, treat it more as a portable desktop (for lans, work, vacations) rather than something I sit on the couch with.
Very happy with it, but probably won't be dropping the cash on another beast of a gaming laptop soon. I will probably upgrade about a year or maybe 1.5 years from now to a standard desktop.
Do alot of people really still game on the G73?
