Well ill give them points for making the 209 BIOS update but not all updated successfully.
-
They don't even seem to care about the GPU issues, no update for half a year meh!
-
I think there needs to be a 3rd option: What issues?
You need to look at it from their side: If the gpu works great with the ASUS drivers, then it works as designed. I had problems with my error log/error reporting service, and turning off powerplay fixed it. I consider that the fault of asus (others blame intel), but it isn't really a problem. It can also be fixed by using stock drivers instead of updating the chipset drivers...
Also, you have to remember that the majority of people that come here, have problems - that's why they're here! For the regular guy who gets a g73 and has 0 problems, he'll look for 0 solutions, because he doesn't need them, and *never* end up here.
From a consumer side, this sucks -

But really this is TSMC's fault which is why for the top of the line products, AMD/ATi will have their new chips manufactured by Global Foundry instead. -
Do you think ASUS is trying? Yo, fix the issues of the G73 biz-itch.
Word!
LOL -
Well, i'll give them points for the bios209. Mine works perfectly so far on stock video drivers after 3 weeks. I'd like to see some vBios love for those who are having problems with their GPU especially since the clevo, msi and TARD vBios seem to fix most issues (and add new one on the video output side).

I think it's linked to whatever they are using for power management. Undervolting during gaming would cause this nonsense.

I had desktop Sapphire ATI 5850 reference design card bought back in January. After using it for five months (no OCing) it started to show randomly GSOD (Green Screen of Death).
Looking in the forums I saw that many others were having similar problems with the latest generation of ATI cards. I found in some threads people were saying that the first series of these cards had manifacturing defects which led to their early death.
I RMAed it and within two weeks I got a totally new full retail Sapphire ATI 5850 which is not a referece card anymore.
It is a custom designed by sapphire and also uses a better cooler. -

I remember 5 or 6 years back I put together a desktop with an Asus A8N SLI premium motherboard. I had a few issues getting it setup and running right initially, and turned to their forums, as well as keeping an eye on updated drivers/etc.
Fortunately I'm having no issues with my G73, but I still pop into the download areas from time to time. . just to see. While I was there I checked out the forums for old time's sake.
Things are still exactly the way they were back in the day when I built that desktop. Forums not moderated or answered by Asus. Few driver updates, Vague BIOS update descriptions. . . i think they MIGHT have slightly revamped the look of their website, but not by much.
I wouldn't expect things to suddenly change now -

OMG, finally a comment about GSOD from Asus.
Don't forget to check the latest user modified vBIOS too: link Several users reported that it fixed GSOD. Hope you guys can use the information from forums to release an official vBIOS fix like Clevo and MSI OR finally release a new (working) Catalyst driver. -
Also whats up, asus -
I also remember I notified him of the issues with the bios, Fn+Esc and the CPU throttling. Sure enough he replied in a thread that this issue would be brought up at a meeting or something and few weeks later have a new bios.
Not saying we are going to get a new vBios, but to think Asus doesn't know what's going on isn't true. Whether they decide to fix or believe that it's a problem is a different story, and I have no idea about. -

Yeah well they take too long with some of their certain products and common for a company that takes pride in creating and making their own designs and products could you please make your cooling better than the crap produced in the past and now also with this machine, the cooling is alright but its nothing compared to Flextronics, and also can you please have some better customer service for godsake and also for the ones who live in their own country!!! Besides that this company needs to be quicker on the fixes with their notebooks. But i am happy that the reps come on here, a forum which originated from the Roman Empire has truly has its voice finally through the many sites like this.

I hope they find a way for everyone to have a successful BIOS update

I fired off a PM to the Asus rep about the issue with KB Lights and flashing BIOS, along with a suggestion

Please see this post for what info to send the Asus rep! -

I have had no issue. The varied range of issues makes me consider rushed assembly. Not that that helps anyone that suffers from. I am however concerned so many seem to suffer issue from updates/upgrades and the like. As such and if so not sure my empathy is all there 100%.
Just my thoughts I do not have any special insights. -

Glad you are paying attention Asus support. Just PM'ed you.
I know it's an Ati issue that some people experience GSOD but several tests here have shown that either timing, clocks and voltage solve it. Most people here would like to see a new vBIOS though with better clock and voltage profiles so the laptop uses a lot less energy in idle low performance/battery operations. Several tests have shown that battery live goes up significantly when the memory is also down clocked and even more if the core voltage is lowered for that situation. Not to mention the lower temperatures.
Hope you can quickly notify a new vBIOS is coming.
For me ideal would be a battery mode of core 100 MHz and memory 200 MHz and a somewhat higher performance mode of core 200 or 300 with memory 500 MHz but we all know that the 5870 has issues clocking to fast back up. You will have a GSOD then. -
I don't know if this could be of any help. I found this page when I was experiencing GSODs with my older Sapphire ATI 5850 desktop card (reference design).
This gives some explanation of what could be happening.

As I said before I RMAed my 5850 and Sapphire sent me a new custom designed one. This one so far had no problems, but I cannot be sure because the first one started to have these after about 4 months of use. -
In reference to the initial question (If it is ok to stay on topic), I would say a resounding yes. You can not expect a company to mointor chat boards, froums and the like and expcect to get fixes implemented. What needs to be done is sign into Asus support, and let them know your problems. I am confident if they see patterns (GSOD's, sound issues, etc) they will work toward resolutions. There is a reason their 3 year reliability record is so good. This will also help going forward I would think with future design and manufacturing. Peer to peer help has been a god send for me, but I do not expect anyone here to do what I would should do initally if I had a major issue. (Contact ASUS!).

If people tell them the problem, they usually work on it and solve it at some point.
We users of N71JQ have also an issue with the NB and that is the fan is cyling like crazy every few seconds up and down.
Ken Lee from Gentech PC was a great help for us. He has reported the problem to ASUS and they are working on it and hopefully N71JQ users will have a solution soon.
Ask Ken Lee, maybe he had already forward this GSOD problem to ASUS. He is very active around here and he will help ASUS owners whenever he can. -

Did anyone notice the lack of communication or even lack of updates after the tech support guy here notified they are busy with the problems?
I find it worrying that with all the problems there are no updates yet!!!
How difficult is it to release an updated video BIOS which better controls the 5870m for the various uses? Other suppliers already did this.
Then there's also the completely borked application of the heatsink and also the borked heatsink itself.
Basically there's a load of problems and none of them have seen a fix. -
maybe they decided to leave it be and focus on the NVIDIA GPUs
Do you think ASUS is trying to fix the issues of the G73?
