I've been looking on these boards, and the verdict on if I should get this laptop is so far a no. I've been looking particularly at the Best Buy version, which is cheaper. Is that one worse or better? If worse, what version should I look at?

It doesn't hurt to use the search button. This question is asked it seems every week and it's the same answer every time.

The BB version only comes with one HDD and a lower res screen and no bluetooth. At least for the G73jh model.

If you want 1080p, HD5870M/GTX460M and dual HDD with bluetooth, doesn't matter if you buy a Clevo, Asus, Alienware, MSI or any gaming laptop, you will have to pay a minimum of $1,500.

If you don't mind a 1600*900 res screen, and no bluetooth, with one HDD bay, then yes I think the BB version is a great deal, with excellent price.
    - Some advice. Check about return policy. Some BB have 14 days or 30 days to return.
    - The JW with 460M doesn't have the GSOD or crappy PowerPlay issues the JH version has with HD5870M

My Best Buy G73JH came with 2 500GB hard-drives. I always found it odd that it was only ever listed as having one on these forums.

Several of the major problems with the G73 have been solved. There is still one major issue with the keyboard lag with the touchpad enabled, but it has a workaround if you are willing to give up the touchpad. Also, while the sound works, most are not too happy that the Creative Software package provided by Asus isn't supported by Windows 7. Also, it's hit or miss, but some people have some very poor factory TIM jobs, but repasting has proved quite successful for many.

The problems aren't that significant any more. A month ago, yeah, it was really hit or miss as to whether or not your laptop would function well. With the release of a new vBIOS, the biggest problems really are just the keyboard lag and the possibility of having a really crappy TIM job. The lag doesn't have the most favorable resolutions right now, but the TIM job is something you can do yourself if you trust yourself enough to rip the laptop apart.

I don't think you should the BB version....simply because of the crappy screen resolution...
through the price is cheaper but you are missing quite a few things in that laptop...

Most problems are solved, the only thing thats still pestering over 60% users is the keyboard missing keystrokes when the Synaptics drivers are installed.
A few of us had some GSODs and stuttering even on the new beta vBios, but it seams these problems are very limited since most users are reporting a stable expirience with it.
However if you want advice on what to buy, id go for the JW over JH right now, becouse of the better touchpad, usb 3.0, i7-740qm CPU and a much cooler gtx 460m GPU (and thus less noisy fans).

A lower screen resolution will yield better results in gaming, which last I checked, this notebook is made for.

I don't want to jinx myself, but I've had absolutely no problems with my G73. No problem even using Catalyst 10.8 with stock VBios either. Fingers crossed.
I'm very impressed with this laptop. It even runs Metro 2033 on high with no problems.

The only way to get a laptop of comparable capability is to get a delloutlet refurb while using the 20% off coupon that is frequently listed on tech bargains. Other than that, nothing else comes close to the best buy version in terms of bang for the buck.

The G73 does have some quirks. I've had my JH-A1 for a month now and with the new vbios it has been great for the most part.

I would not recommend the best buy version. When you factor in the tax and the warranty only being 1 year, the JH and JW seem much better. There hasn't been much posted about the JW on here so I can't say much about it.

Also recommend the Intel 6200 wireless & IC7 thermal paste. Another $100 but worth it in the long run.

    $100 ouch, I only paid $40 for both. ICD7 @ MicroCenter is $7 and I got the 6200 from proadvantage for $30.

Card: PROVANTAGE: Intel 622AN.HMWWB Intel Wifi Link 6200 622AN.HMWWB Half Height Minicard VPRO Enabled Retail
Paste: Micro Center - IC Diamond IC Diamond 7 Carat Thermal Compound 1.5g THR-41

    :) Don't scare people away.

Really, the only outstanding issue is the keyboard lag and the touchpad is garbage right now. If you plan on using that then don't get this laptop right now. The touchpad messes up your finger detection/freezes etc...

Best Buy initially carried an -RBBX09 version that had 2 500GB hard-drives and 8GB of RAM. However, the price differential between it and the RBBX05 w/ 1 500GB hard-drive and 6GB of RAM was positively stupid, IMHO, and the RBBX09 didn't survive for long.
