I've found the new Catatlyst Uninstaller does a good enough job, you don't need deep clean drivers or registry fixes. If you want to clean registry, use something safe like CCleaner. In general Windows 7 is excellent OS. You don't need OS tweakers or deep clean registry programs any longer, they do more damage than good often now.
Driver Sweeper, TWL's Cleaner, Driver Cleaner etc delete legacy drivers. Microsoft views legacy drives as system files. If you delete these, you will NOT be able to install Windows 7 SP1 in the future. Reinstalling legacy drives is a real pain and 95% you'll end up just reinstalling Windows AGAIN.
I personally have found after doing a clean install, I have better performance also by not deleting everything like that. My battery life difference is 3 hours vs 2 hours. No other changes to power saving settings and GPU clocks.
Just my personal experience. And yes I could not install SP1 after using these cleaners and it's been confirmed by other users. There is no need for it. It's true ATi/Nvidia uninstallers in the past were terrible. You find today, the current default uninstallers do remove the relevant registry entries and all folders related. So I recommend, just uninstall normal. Run CCleaner if it makes you feel better. Reboot, no safe mode, install the new drivers.
Just my 2 cents, and experience so far. I've been messing with so many different driver cleaners and custom drivers. I've found best performance is just doing the default and using WHQL drivers. It's fun to use modded for different features, but that's it.

Wow. So I won't be able to install SP1 because i used Driver Sweeper? Need a fresh install of Windows 7?
-
Well, thanks for the info, but too late for me, SP1 won't install, and I've used Driversweeper many times.
Maybe a fresh re-install is next... -
Should tell this to chastity
-
I thought SP1 was still in RC stage and not official, but next to official correct? The symptoms/problems you are having installing SP1 could be related to not official yet.
-
I installed SP1 no problem on 3 machines, including the lappy which has had many a scrubs.
@smitty870: it's RTM, and went out to OEMs, which of course leaked like a busted dam -
If Driver Sweeper has removed legacy drivers and your SP1 won't load, go to the DS forums and I think you'll find the files you need or at least assistance in finding them. I was reading about this problem elsewhere. I've only used CCleaner, so I think I'll be okay, but I'm also waiting for MS to release SP1 before I apply it (as I've no great need, ie., Sandy Bridge CPU or use for HDMI from my laptop, etc.)
-
i am using tune up utillities
will i be able to install SP1? -
You're welcome to wait, and it's going to be a few months, but there is not going to be any changes, since it is the RTM (Final) release.
-
Here's a question though: what, exactly does SP1 offer over the existing Windows Updates if everything has already been installed?
-
So you want me to type up a whole write-up on SP1 and it's benefits? No thx, use Google.
-
Driver Sweeper 2.8.5 is updated to leave the Windows 7 system drivers alone so it will not interfere with any service pack upgrades.
See UPDATE in NGOHQ.com link below:
Beware of Driver Sweeper on Windows 7
Chastity, would you mind updating your asus rog driver post to list this new version? Thanks for putting that up by the way! -
Welp, with the release of SP1 today I can confirm that my machine cannot install SP1. Windows Update is now asking that I reinstall the OS in order to fix the problem.
I'm sorry, but this new update to Driver Sweeper to no longer break your Windows install isn't going to convince me to use it again. I'll just have to place my faith in the driver package uninstallers. -
Likewise here. /facepalm
Edit: In the process of restoring the ati manifest and packages thingy. So far SFC.exe is scanning. Used to stop at 1%. -
Since I have every update installed through Windows Update today the sp1 size's is only 87.2MB for my system. The problem the update is stacked at 18% when downloading the files. I tried even repairing using Microsft Fix It to repair the corrupted updater. Every time I got the same error code: 80200053. Not sure is related to Driver Sweeper (using 2.5 until today) but so far I cannot find the way to repair it.
Any suggestion?
@BlumbeBoner: you can download here the ati manifest files needed. -
Used Driver Sweeper 2.1 since having the G73JH and I managed to install the SP1 without any problem. My SP1 download is 87.2MB as well.
-
Re-installing Windows is rather drastic for the layman I'd say.
An alternate fix, specifically the Phyxion forum one, is preferred over a complete re-install.
I couldn't update to SP1 initially as well, but the restoring process including the 3 sfc /scannow sessions+ reboots+ the actual updating took me less then 90 minutes. Watched Top Gear inbetween.
@Nekki
Thanks but I already got on it and succeeded.
Sidenote.
Xellon's troubleshooting method thingy.

A mod might want to merge the thread here. -
Hey Ruckus, take it easy dude. The problem was solved alone, I just run Windows Update this morning and I was able to download the whole update for my unit, the 87.2MB. The installation was pretty smooth and takes no longer than 5 minutes. In addition, I made the Ati manifest files restore using the DriverSweeper 2.8.5 yesterday night, so, this morning the update was fine probably because of this. The error code was give for failure in the download process, probably the MS servers were over-saturated since I'm experienced the same problem in my work place (the downloading precess doesn't even start)...
My only concern the 82.7mb sp1 generated over 26000 files of backup in no more than 400MB. Now I'm still in the precess to ged rid of the waste (30 min so far with TuneUp) -
It was a blast trying to update to Service Pack 1. Not only did it take an hour just to download to 50% (80MB by the way, screw you Microsoft), it froze my Laptop and crippled my Windows install on reboot. I could barely do a thing with it freezing or being painfully slow, I had to reinstall my OS because of that. After my fresh install it still took awhile for the SP to download but it downloaded successfully at least. I noticed my startup time is noticeably longer after installing it, otherwise my performance is about the same. SHUR IS FUN having to reinstall all my garbage, har har har...sigh:
Hate this Service Pack. -
Why do people even bother with Windows Update for service packs? Just download the redist and use that. Saves a lot of headaches, plus if you have multiple machines, you don't have to redownload.
-
Because the download details states that its close to a gig for the full x64 download, 1.9 gigs for iso and not everyone has a 300Mbit fiber optic connection.
Convenience really. -
No DIS intend for Ruckus.. Back to OP, In the title it should have the words 'If you do not know squat about computers' tacked on to the end. just in case a lurker sees the title and does not have the ability to read further + 1 BB
-
Even on a 2mbit line the download isn't so bad. You obviously missed the good ol' days of using MODEMS, and building up your ratios on dial-up BBS's!
-
Give me a chance and I'll hum the modem's dial up tone note for note. lol
Its because the SP1 update cleared your system caches and basically semi-wiped the computer's memory of your habits. Will take another bout of usage for the computer to relearn which are your most used files and stuff etc.
Standard fare when it comes to Service Pack updates I'll say. -
Off topic but I remember my friends being totally jealous of me because I had a 14.4kbps and they all had 2400bps modems. Playing Land of Devastation was a ton of fun. Now we have WoW.
-
Well I never had a problem with Windows update, hell even when I reinstalled it and used it, all the updates downloaded fine except the SP1 update. God knows why that is but if I had to choose between a 2GB DL and a 80MB, I'd pick the latter, and I did. Never again.
-
I was worried about this, but the 83mb update installed w/o issues for me. I have only used driver sweeper 2-4 times though.

I have too without issues. I think you had underlying issues somewhere else. With any registry cleaner you need to read everything to ensure its safe to delete and not just trust the program and delete everything. I have used CCleaner and it messed up my external Blu-ray drive drivers and it would not work any longer, I had to reinstall Windows that is how I learned my lessen.
Some of us are in Iraq and the internet is horrible. Paying for the best service and its 128K but only downloading at an average of 5.5K - 16K sec. Its horrible here. To download 1.9 GBs it would take at least four days if the download doesnt cut off, I have to use a download manager for everything or I am unable to download anything. LOL. I think I would be better off with 56K. -
And yet, if you downloaded it once, you could pass it around to guys in your ... squadron, or whatever you call it. your jeesh. your unit (not THAT unit, the OTHER unit). heh, your jeesh unit.
Sure, it'd take 4 days, but then you'd never have to do it again. -

LOL. Actually the download size for me on SP1 was only 80Mb-120Mb cause I keep the windows up to date. -
is it just me but i feel after installing the SP1 my CPU usage is always 5% or sometimes even 20% and i don't know why
i've checked all the processes but non of them go higher than 1%
any ideas? maybe some service? or hidden process ?
EDIT:nvm it was rainmeter
Don't use Driver Sweeper! Or others like it!
