Hallo, this week i bought my first Asus laptop after having Alienware with problems and missing games from using Mac, i got a G73SW-BST6

When it arrives tomorrow i will replace the stock HDD with my Samsung 470 128gb ssd, my question is, it comes with Recovery CD's? The drivers doesn't matters a lot because i like to download the more updated from the website. The problem is windows because i haven't found information about if it comes or not.

Also any new tips for my Asus (overclocking, experiences, etc.?), how does perform with games? Really the game that i will play more is Starcraft 2, because the rest will be for photoshop and things like that because i bought a new Canon (exploring the world of the professional cameras :D )

    Greetings!

No recovery CDs. You have to make them using the ASUS Recovery software. So before you swap out the HD, boot into Windows once first and make the discs using the ASUS Recovery Tool.

You will probably notice a big difference if you had an alienware sadly not so in the game department you have chosen the BST6 which has a downgraded GPU to 128bit and it suffers mostly in the memory bandwidth department but due to lower ROP's the fillrate's also have taken a hit.

Starcraft 2 should run fine but 40gb/s will not be enough to run the latest games ie Witcher 2, Battlefield 3, Skyrim at Maximum high res settings because of the amount of texture processing required.

If you have the chance of a 192bit GPU you would be better coughing up for it.

I'd strongly suggest you return it. Its going to be much worse. Get something like a MSI GT780DSX which is $1300. It will be a better deal.

The JH is the only exception to that since it has a non gimped 5870, the lower resolution screen might be a turn off though.

I would have liked 1080p when I first got it but now as games become more intensive it becomes less of a problem :D

I just bought the G73SW from best buy as well. The only games I want to play on my pc are Starcraft 2 and diablo 3. I have a ps3 for everything else Should I return the laptop? I only paid $650 for it.

For $650 it is a good deal regardless of the gimped GPU. Note that when we say gimped, it is compared to the GTX460m in the other configurations of the G73SW, it is still better than a 540m or 555m. I can't say for D3, but SC2 will run at near max settings.

Yesterday my G73SW arrived and well im happy (coming from a Macbook Pro with 330M and a M15x with GT 240M). Really i dont play a lot only SC2, League of Legends and some MMROPG (WoW, Ragnarok Online). Because i want to start with Photoshop and stuff like that for my new Canon.

The resolution of 1600x900 is fine for me because with the 1080p display my eyes would hurt of all the tiny stuff in the screen.

While i can play SC2 all in High (compared to my previous 2 systems in medium), im happy, and since i replaced the factory HDD with my SSD is perfect this system for me.

Honestly, the difference between high and ultra in SC2 is rather small. The one between med and high is huge though.

    Sorry to rant but:

    1. Asus needs to take a hint from MSI and ditch the GTX560m for the 570m.

    2. Best Buy needs to stop selling gimped GPUs. Someone should seriously sue them for false advertising. The G73jh-rbbx05 was the second gaming laptop I bought from them and both were powerful machines with good value. Sure it wasn't as good as an A1 but the gaming performance was on par.

But these gimped models make me sick. My advice is to return it and get the best gaming laptop you can afford. Even as a casual gamer unless you quit gaming you'll eventually want something better. The better your machine is the longer it will be that it satisfies your needs.

Return it and lodge a complaint against Best Buy for selling you a gimped laptop that looks like the real deal.
