So, as the delivery date of my G73 draws ever closer I am thinking more about the Apps I am going to put on it. I am changing from a Macbook Pro and therefore would be interested in what you Seasoned Windows Laptop owners have on your Lappy.

Of course I will put Office 2010 and the Adobe suite of apps on, iTunes etc and so on, but what else.

What are the essential apps for you whilst travelling?

As an alternative to Trillian, I would suggest Pidgin.

Nice Start, thank you guys. I actually use Giganews for downloading "stuff"

Hmm, this spawns another question. With Giganews you are limited from downloading from 1 MAC address. Are there any Ggianews type services that allow more, this way I could download whilst at work (The IT boys put in an ADSL line not connected to the corporate LAN to my desk :D ) and whilst I am in hotels travelling.

Also, can you run 2 versions of steam? I am wondering how that is going to work as I have a few games downloaded by steam on my Desktop.

Any ideas? And sorry for going slightly off topic :)

Pidgin is light and simple, good for some people and surely the best on Linux and *BSD. But on Windows, there is more to choose from. I think Trillian has the best Facebook and Twitter integration, but when you don't want to use FB/TW, Pidgin/Miranda would be a logic choice.

If you plan on gaming (G73 for gaming?!) then I just found this Game Save Manager tool. It allows you to back-up your saves for various games from a database they continually updating. But you can also manually add your games that are not in the database.

    GameSave Manager

In all honesty, the only software that you need with the G73 are drivers, DX11 and a s...load of games :)

Seriously though, this is what I use:
Winamp for music (don't like iTunes)
    CCCP (codecs for videos)
    Thunderbird (mail)
Open Office (free and does the same stuff as Microsoft Office)
Opera browser (in yer face firefox hipsters :p )
    Filezilla (ftp client)
    WinRAR (archiving)
    Pidgin (communicator)
    Skype (voip)
    IfranViev (picture viewer)
Photoshop (or get Gimp, which is the same but free)
    Dreamweaver (www design)
    uTorrent (file sharing)
    Steam (games)

Something we have forgotten is a Virtual Drive, app, cant remember the name of the one I have on my PC.

I get MS office for £8.99 via work so no need for Open Office.

Smart security is paid, I think it is worth using MSE instead. What is the last time you got virus? It is 2 years for me. CCleaner is only good for cleaning Temp files, there is really no need to do anything with your registry unless you your own system. And I wouldn't use the old ACDSee, there are many fast free laternatives.

That's one of the great things about steam! You can game on lots of different pc's as long as you are only logged in one of them at a time. And with the newer games that save to the cloud, you even get your saves wherever you are.

MSE and you will forget any other free or paid antivirus. Smooth, silent and not consuming-resources piece of software.

portableapps.com has many of the already mentioned apps in free portable format.
    Highly recommended.

MSE free/ESET or Avira for paid antivirus
Wndows LIVE downloads (writer and gallery are great)
WMP (it's suprisingly decent in W7), songbird, or AIMP if you can ditch itunes
MPC-HC or VLC for video playback
Boxee or XBMC for media center replacements.

Chromeplus for your web browser, updates on it have slowed a bit but it's still by far the best chromium based browser and after trying it you'll never go back to anything else; the speed is addictive.

VMWare player/VirtualBox, both are free and both are great.

    uTorrent for downloads
    CCleaner for clearing crap
    AutoHotKey for windows automation
PuTTY for telnet/ssh, if you need such a thing
WinSCP for FTP/SCP, if you need such a thing
    TeamViewer for remote assistance
    Hamachi for VPN
    7-zip for archival
    theRenamer for renaming downloads
q10 if you write a lot
    ImgBurn for burning
    Rainmeter for skinning
    hwinfo for getting computer info

vpn/vnc is the best for private network and remote control, but you have to have at leeast one computer with static public IP, otherwise use TeamViewer.

Anyway, theank you ieatrocks for Boxee and Rainmeter, they both seem to be a nice piece of SW!

you can do it that way, or install Steam, download the program, and then back it up to a external hdd. On the other machines, install steam app, then use that to restore the game.

Bare minimum. Only install what you need, nothing more. BTW you'll notice on your switch from MacOS X to Windows 7, Windows 7 is both faster and uses less resources. Mac morons won't admit it, but it's been tested and proven :p

Don't get caught. But really, for almost every country/MPAA etc. The issue isn't over downloading. The issue is over distribution. That's how they catch people with LimeWire etc. Just don't distribute what you download. Private trackers will hate you and ban you for that since that's how torrents die :p
