Hello all, I'm extremely happy to say that I now own an ASUS G74, especially after all of the problems and hassle from Dell's customer support. My story is this- I had initially ordered an Alienware M17X R3, but after all the problems and lies from Dell, I want nothing to do with them. I ordered my M17X on the 3rd of July, and I STILL have not received it, and I won't until the 20th IF NOT LATER. I've already arranged for return shipping on the laptop (especially after reading the horrible reviews and nightmarish customer support stories), and on Friday night I purchased my ASUS G7. I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with it, and it can play all of my games smooth as butter (Including Crysis 2 on Ultra with 30 FPS). This laptop has taken everything I can throw at it, and kept on going like it was a stroll in the park. I love this computer so much, and I would recommend ASUS to all of my friends!

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I upgraded from an HP Pavilion, and I must say this laptop is out of this world, especially compared to the HP. I love everything about the G74, especially the matte screen! :D

I love how there are so many different notebook owner and fans ranging from Alienware, Sager, Asus, and MSI as the four top in gaming brand. Quite exciting actually.

It is quite funny I personally love alienware laptops they are so god damn good looking and I have always wanted one but never had one! Asus has caused me nothing but problems in the past but it comes down to money.

I can see me going for an AW Xfire setup next though because the M18x is very tasty!

Currently I support Asus but that is subject to change when power corrupts my mind! :D

congrats. i just got mine also. Just not having as fun of a time like you are. After initial power up. i tested the video, blu-ray and sound and proceeded to make a back-up of the recovery drive via AI Recovery. After some errors and a couple of failed dvd-r's...it wouldn't create the last disc.

i though it was a software issue. so i updated win 7 HP. now when i tried to use the AI Recovery, it doesn't read that i have a recovery drive. I've installed the updated 1.0.14 version, and re-installed the current 1.0.13 version with no luck.

I was wondering if you had that issue and if you were able to create the recovery disc.

I might have to start this thread on the ROG forums. just frustrated that i'm already running into some minor issues with this g74 and its only been 1 day. :(

What are you talking about? There's peace right now.

I have been down that path before. My G51, G71, & G73 were full of bugs and problems. Asus's Tagalog technical support was awful. The only way to get anything repaired was to send the unit in for depot repair and risk receiving a damaged unit in return.

Instead I bought a brand new M17x R2 with 5870M CF(originally priced at 2400.00USD for 1600.00 after discount. After encountering a few glitches here and there through software, AW/Dell upgraded me for free to a maxed out R2 with 256GB SSD. That unit had the same plugged in not charging problem as my prior M17'x R2 did.

Then AW/Dell upgraded me to a maxed out M18x for free. Currently I have received 580M's in SLI with cable for free(a 1200.00 upgrade) because of the aero bug. The M18x is so awesome/powerful I can never go back. Customer service has been more than fair. Not once have I had to send in my unit. They offer next business day servce & parts.

    Here's a pic of my unit and video of AlienFX during audio playback in WMP. width='425' height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8NKF-4ZVsYw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8NKF-4ZVsYw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width='425' height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
But....when it comes down to budget no one can argue that Asus provides an excellent solution.

    @skygunner

All costs included, including those incredible free upgrades that boggle the mind, how much did you spend in total for your current AW setup? And that discount ($1600) was via the old haggle the Dell service rep over the phone routine?

2920XM with 6970M Crossfire obliterates pretty much everything.

After all I went through I spent 2000.00 to get the setup that I have. That includes shipping an handling. 900.00 of that 2000.00 was from me selling my G73JH.

    Holy Loli!! O.O

Man I Think I will only chose Alienware machines from now on, plus they are getting better prices using coupons =p

Right now I'm aiming for the M17x with the 6990 *-*.

I never got any problems on my G73JH (but made both vBios and Bios updates), nevertheless your story motivates me to aim for a better gaming system ^^ definitely not the G74 coming from a G73JH ;) witch is a better looking system on my humble opinion, as well as a better video card.

    Thanks!

Their discounts are awesome. Besides all of the awesomeness that is Alienware....their customer service/AW/Dell tech support has never really said no to me.
I first bought my M17x R2 from Amazon for 1600.00USD. The original price was 2400.00. That unit was equipped with a 5870M's in Crossfire, 740qm, 1440 x 900 screen, DVD-RW, bluetooth, 500GB HDD, 6GB's of 1333 ram and sweet AlienFX lighting all in a sick package.

That unit was replaced through Amazon a couple of times and I lost 350.00 in shipping insured.

Then AW replaced my unit with a 940XM, 1920 x 1200(1200P RGB LED) screen, Blu-ray RW, 8GB's DDR3@1333MHz, Intel 6300, 5870M CF & bluetooth. An awesome upgrade. That unit had the same software problem as previous units. The issue wasn't life changing...just annoying.

Then they offered me a brand new M18x that's in my sig....but with replacement 580M's in SLI.
My current unit is perfect. With the exception of my first R2, all of my AW systems have exceeded all expectations and have been a blast to own.

I really, really don't mind the glitz (or ditz, depending on your level of elitism) and LEDs of an Alienware, and I'm strong enough to lug that bugger around if need be, and $2000 minus $900 sounds like a bloody mind-blowing deal for your current set-up.

I hope to hell you're not blowing smoke up our collective arses because its almost impossible to believe. :p

I got my G73 from Amazon too at about 1500USD and I'm lucky enough to have a trouble-free experience with it and should be able to get around 1k from selling it, and will be hopping aboard the new laptop boat as soon as Ivy Bridges hit, but the lacklustre Sager/Clevos and utterly disappointing Asus refreshes leave me no choice but Alienware. And you're the model I'm hoping to copy when I make my purchase.

So you just called Dell up, said that some components were not working properly, and they just upgraded you? Just like that? An 2920XM JUST LIKE THAT?!

I agree that when it comes to real performance/looks, Alienware can't be beat. I also have a AW 18" Orion Messenger Bag for lugging around my M18x, whenever I decide to show up at the local lan party.

I spent alot of hours troubleshooting to get the setup I have today. Even if you have to pay close to retail, a reasonably priced M18x with a 2630QM & 6990M's in Crossfire should cost you 2499.99 before any discount. That setup would be more than adequate for today's games, especially more so then a single 560M or 560M in SLI.

If you need help with ordering shoot me a PM or head over to the M18x forum. The community there is awesome and always glad to help.
I don't want to steal any fire away from the OP

I'm pretty sure that's the route I'm taking for my next purchase. Rebate from the G73, then get the 2720/6990M Crossfire setup.

Forever side-eyeing you and your 2920XM though. Immense.

Edit: Comes up to $2869 for 2720/6990Ms/8GB. I can afford that. :D

lol...the funny thing is that in the dept I work in, everyone thinks they are a computer genius. But when they see my M18x they know I mean real business...lol.
