Firstly, I am sorry if this has been already posted/answered. So I got my G74sx-xc1 yesterday (newegg bf deal) and I set up according to guides for g73 (removing crapware etc.). I did not, however, do a clean install.
When playing games (tried out saints row the third), I could hear a very low humming sound which was similar to something you might hear on an airplane. It wasn't something that was intrusive but it was there. I could hear it specifically during quieter portions of the game.
I am dead sure its not the fans as they have a different sound. I suspect this was the harddrive but I have never heard a hdd sound like this. There were also no clicking sounds whatsoever.
For the record, I am on win 7 64bit, 750 GB hdd, 8 gb ram. Also, do let me know which tool can help detect such a problem.

Constant humming will most likely be the fans if it is an irregular hum it could be the hard drive loading as mechanical drives are bloody noisy compared to SSD's you dont realise the different till you compare them.
If not are you sure you bought a G74 and not a Boeing 747 -
Well, if it sounds like a jet, it's just living up to the marketing
Faint, jet-like humming from G74sx
