After months of painful research following threads here and trying to find out if the G73 was a fatally flawed machine. Finally pulled the trigger and bought a G73 from BestBuy.
Some notes for those interested in the machine:
1) Cheapest version I've seen is from BestBuy due to concessions to screen resolution, accesories and peripherals. I don't mind though since my main concern is gaming performance.
2) The manufacture date according to the box is 6/2010. I dont know if its relevant but I did read in some thread that there are less problems in the more recently manfuactured units.
3) Th BIOS version is already 209 with stock video drivers matching those from the ASUS site. I don't intend to update unless necessary and only from ASUS. The only software changes I did was to remove the bloatware as per the guides in this forum.
4) I'e been playing SC2 for mostly two day snow, and I get 40ish fps on ultra and 60ish on high using native resolution.
5) After gaming on SC2, campaign and multiplayer for several hours, cpu temps were at 50ish and GPU at 60ish. I wasn't very scientific with this, I'll revisit the temps in another session. The laptop is also on a Targus Chillmat with 2 fans and in airconditioned room with thermostat set at 21C
6) No crashes or any faults or anything --so far. But I'm also not the type to run stress tests. For me, as long as it plays the games I want, and keeps relatively cool, then I'm happy.
While I'm sure that there are those with real and painful problems with their G73s, so far, I've had an encouraging experience with the unit. Hope this also encourages those wavering on the unit. It's not all bad.
