I just got my first GSOD today. I downclocked the GPU to 300/400 with AMD GPU Clock Tool then I opened CCC then disabled the PowerPlay then the screen went Black and Grey striped on me.

Was my downclocking procedure wrong? whats the best settings for downclocking?

    Currently running 10.7 Drivers

Maybe you could try to down clock to a slightly higher setting first, give it a few seconds then down clock again... See if that works for you.

You do know powerplay underclocks it to 300/1000 itself if you change the powerplan right? I find that good enough of an underclock (i dont like underclocking the memory since it makes the screen flash and doesnt really lower temperatures noticably).

It lowers only 1-2C for me to go from 300/1000 to 200/300... Interesting.

when on stock clocks my temps idle at 68-69C and when i use 300/500 i idle at 57-58 C and when i leave it on through the night till morning, it goes down to 55-54C

I idle at 57-60C on high performance (700/1000 clocks), on balanced/power saver (300/1000) clocks i idle at 53-56C, lowering it further to 200/300 only brings it down around 1 or 2 more degrees which is negligable to me.
    Ambient is 26-27C here now.

Probably because you redid your paste and it's being more efficient at higher clocks.

HellCry, I idle in the low 70s (on stock clocks) and the only time I have ever overheated was when I was playing GTA4 and I kept it paused (pausing the game seems to warm up my temps a bit for some reason) for too long. Other than that my MemIO gets in the 90s and my core flirts with 90, it may be a bit hot but I've never had any problems with those temps.

i never experienced overheating with this machine. The highest i've gone was 100C for MemIO when playing GTA4. but that was just one time, now it just reaches the low 90s and more commonly at 87C

I would call it bad but I would also call it a fluke, as I haven't had any problems since, I've played a lot more GTA since then and after 20-30 minutes of playing I pause the game, check my temps and see MemIO at 85, everything else in the low 80s. Plus the other thing is when it overheated that one time, I was playing without sound and I couldn't hear the fans - I knew for sure they weren't on high. My temps said 105C yet the fans were only at 30% not 100% like they should have been. Now when I play without sound I can hear the fan (doesn't bother me one bit, in fact I'm glad to hear it because that tells me the fan is doing its job) as it's full blast, and when I check my temps they're in the 80s, so I think I'm ok now.

Usually a short circuit or something like that.
You can fry it with static from a vacuum cleaner for instance.
