Alltho not directly related to the G73 i for one have had these random win7 lockups and freezes on my G73 (havent experianced it on my other laptops tho). I have been running this fix since it was made public and no more lockups so far.
Might be wort a try:

That's interesting. I have experienced lockups coming out of hibernation but not every time. Over the weekend I had a lockup coming out of hibernation. Monday morning it came out of hibernation just fine. I don't know if others have had this issue. It hasn't been discussed much in the G73 threads but it's not really a G73 issue anyway. It's a Windows 7 problem.

Oh wow! I have not had any of the GSOD or PSOD, I can game forever (with peaks at 95C though) BUT... sometimes I get what feels like what you describe!
I had come to a partial conclusion that it seemed to be when the GPU changed "gears" with Powerplay and there was sound being played... I'm testing this hypothesis and so far no lock ups.
I'm trying the out the KB tonight. -

Just installed it. I wasn't sure what was causing my lockups. I thought it was the 10.7a drivers or something. I would just be idling at desktop and total freeze with a hardboot to fix the only solution. This just started about 2 weeks ago or so. Hopefully this solves that and I won't yell at Asus so much now.

Finally, I didn't test it yet, I wanted to finish testing the other idea before mixing in more parameters.
I played about 3 hours of Mass Effect 2(steam) with no lockups. At one point I got a big scare as the sound stuttered but instead of staying like that (aweful whine and must hard reboot to stop) it moved on.
As I said, I've been setting fixed frequencies to see if the issue comes when powerplay changes them dynamically.
Funny point, is that yesterday I had left 150/300 (my office/browsing frequencies) and played 3 hours like that! Game was a bit sluggish, I thought... but playable! oh... and temps were great ;-)
I'm starting to think that this could be the same problem some people fix by slightly overclocking their card and others by leaving "High performance"... if you set fixed frequencies, lockups and GSOD's seem to be far fewer...
Tonight I'll play again, but perhaps set the frequencies to a more... err..adequate value ! -
I downloaded the patch (you have so sign in and they mail a link to you).
Applied and rebooted... and it locked up!!!!!
But since then, no lock ups whether on battery or power, whether on fluctuating frequencies or fixed... knock on wood. -

yes. no more lock ups.
it's been very stable.
how about you? -
Rock solid!

I would just like to thank you for posting this as I have been struggling with GSOD & BSOD when updating my video drivers.
I installed this hotfix updated my bios to 211 then followed Chastity's instructions in the GSOD Fixes and Resources post as well as bluecoala's tip regarding using only Realtek 2.51 and Realtek ATI HDMI 2.49 as sound drivers:
I uninstalled my ATI drivers completely as well as my creative and realtek drivers.
I then booted into safe mode ran driver sweeper and cleaned the registry of the above 3 drivers.
My next step was installing 10.8 ati drivers and installing the realtek R251 drivers and the HDMI R249 for sound.
Rebooted and now I can run furmark indefinitely no GSOD!! SC2 runs so much smoother no more screen freezes in combat or jerky graphics, the visuals are also much nicer to look at!
My Temp is about 98-100 in furmark, If I was'nt such a klutz I would try doing the thermal repaste but no chance I don't wanna risk botching the job. I wish there was a professional I could hire to do it for me!
I still haven't been able to solve the skipping sound in SC2, I'll keep looking in this forum for tips though.
If you are suffering from GSOD please install this hotfix and uninstal + clean registry of your video drivers and install the new ATI 10.8, that just might work for you as it did for me! -
thanks for this. Just installed it and so far so good.

No problem -
I wanted to give some feedback.
As you can see, I was one of the first ones to benefit from this fix. Yet, after a while the lock ups came back. ("oh no! they found me!" but I digress...)
I reaplied the patch, I fixed what I could, I uninstalled everything and reinstalled drivers, from chipset to touchpad to webcam and its mother... but the lock ups kept happening.
So I did a clean install from an OEM windows 7 copy and since then it is total bliss.
If you try the solution in this thread and it doesn't work, then think about a clean install and do it cleanly, rebooting every time, etc. Also, think about making a back up when you reach that nice "all set" stage... that way next time you won't have to start form scratch. Oh, and don't forget to use ABR to back up your activation. I works great and saves you the call to MS. -

I've managed to fix the problem on my G73JH using the one I've posted on this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/492354-all-g73jh-problems-solutions-here-51.html#post6895358
Hope this resolves your problems on freezing or lock-ups on Windows 7 on your G73. -
My windows 7 was locking up due to Acronis home image 2011.
Took me nearly a day to uninstall that sucker. I had to basically DL devcon amdx64 and add that to my SysWow, then download the Acronis uninstaller and use a regsitry cleaner to take that junk off.
Now my system is back in tiptop shape. -
Attached is the Windows 7 hotfix in a .zip folder for x64 installations for people who don't want to go through the passwords and email stuff.
No viruses or anything, I just zipped the one file it extracted and posted it here. Should be about 200kB. Someone who trusts me can verify this.
Just run the zipped exe, no extracting needed.Attached Files:

I dunno, I think after the vbios update, my freezing just stopped. Strange how after I applied the patch, it worked fine but then a month later, it stared freezing again. Probably something from windows update.
but its fine now....
