As we all know, Bioshock is known to lock up due to audio issues in Windows 7. This happened to me as well when I fired up Bioshock for the first time today thru Steam on my Asus G73jh. It typically freezes with "bioshock.exe has stopped working" message.

From numerous threads it has been established that it's an audio issue with RealTek audio not playing nice with the game's FMOD audio engine.

A lot of solutions have been posted on the web to fix this .. none of them worked for my Asus G73jh until I read this post which ACTUALLY works and fixed the problem for me:

    The link is below:

    FIXED - "bioshock.exe has stopped working" on Windows 7 - 2K Forums

This addresses the lock up issue and enables audio throughout the entire game.

In fact I've further condensed the steps as follows as it for works for me:

    1. No need to edit the Default.ini file as outlined in numerous posts. Undo any changes.

    2. No need to set Bioshock.exe to any compatibility mode. Unselect the "Run this program in compatibility mode for " option for this file.

    3. Does not have to be run in directx 9 mode .. no need to pass -dx9 to the command line. Runs directx 10 perfectly fine.

    4. No need to enable 'Stero Mix' under Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording as has been mentioned in numerous web threads.

    5. I have not updated my RealTek drivers. Still running stock ver 6.0.1.5987.

    6. Simply go to Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback. From Playback disable 'Realtek Digital Output'. You can leave 'Realtek HDMI Output' enabled and obviously 'Speakers' will also have to be enabled.

    7. Note: I'm running Bioshock thru Steam. I believe G73jh locks up Steam in general as mentioned in numerous threads on this web-site due to Sound Blaster EAX drivers. The fix for this is simple, simply select Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers -> Properties and go to 'Enhanchment' tab and select 'Disable all sound effects' and do the same for 'Sound Blaster' tab. This will take care of Steam problem without having to uninstall the Sound Blaster drivers.

    Hope this helps !!

Ok .. now back to playing Bioshock.

Thx for the heads up, but to run Steam you don't need to disable all sound effects, as this will kill the Bass Boost and other options. See the Creative thread below for other options.
