Looking to pick up either the g750 or alienware 17. For those of you that have had some time to play around with the G750, do you recommend it? Regret your purchase?
Also, how is the display? Some people have complained about the graininess.
Thanks for any input

I must say the only thing that I dislike about the G750 is the screen. The screen is so grainy for me since I do a lot of work on white background. So the stock screen me a lot and I had to replace it with the Lp173WF1-TLB3, which fits perfectly my expectation. If you play games or watch movies, this stock screen isn't a problem. And I don't like the Windows 8 as well, which is the worst Windows OS ever.
Also, it doesn't have the steel series keyboard, which is very nice to have.
Otherwise, I am pleased with this laptop. The fan is so quiet, laptop is cool. The thing that I like the most is the aluminum palm rest, the best palm rest I've ever seen.
Alienware is quiet nice too, but it is a little bit more expensive. G750 has a very reasonable price and it doesn't look showy compared to the Alienware when bring to work, for example. -
I have the 3D screen and it's super clear with 0 grainy effect
I learned my lesson the hard way as my previous laptop was a G75VW with a matte screen, it was dull as hell and grainy especially on white backgrounds
whatever you do, get the 3D / glossy screen and not the matte or anti glare screen -
Where did you order from? I'm in Canada so it seems my ordering options are a little limited.

What you must do is take in positives and negatives and make a decision for yourself. If positives outweight negatives, I get the laptop. If not, I move on to my next candidate.
This laptop's palmrest is absolutely a beauty. Having a good palmrest for DTR laptop is very important because that's where such laptops are susceptible to wear and tear. The keyboard is very good. The screen is below average and the maintenance is pain if not impossible for average Joe.
The reason I bought this laptop was its strong palmrest. I've had DTR laptops literally breaking down on palmrest for years of usage, so that was the most important part. I can live with the below-average screen. I've had worse.
Performance wise, I have no issues.
P.S. Clevo W230ST's screen blows G750's screen out of water by miles away. -
The g750jh is the best gaming laptop currently on the market. I do not regret the purchase. But as others have already said: it is not perfect.
I wished they would have included a matte, 72% gamut IPS screen, but they decided to use the standard Chi Mei TN panel, that many 17 inch gamers use. Around 60% gamut and a bit too grainy with light backgrounds. It is good in games, but has weaknesses when reading docs and processing photos (color temps and gamut).
Build quality, keyboard, components and noise are very good. Still waiting for a serious review of the AW 18 to see if its screen is better. But even if so, I am sure, that it will not beat the Asus in other categories. -

You have to be a bit careful when using such broad brushes like "gaming notebook" as within that category people can have wildly different needs.
The M18 would win in sheer performance due to having two cards but it's going to be much bigger and heavier so it's not going to suit a lot of people. -
My G750 isn't here yet so I cannot speak with certainty but I believe the screens of the lower priced unit (w/ 765 vid) and the next bin up (770) are different as the latter supports 3D. Even tho it is a matte finish Digital Trends said in their JX review:
"All G750 models come with a 1080p matte panel that, unlike many competitors, doesn’t sacrifice performance to banish glare. Delivering solid contrast, our benchmarks show the display capable of rendering 96 percent of the sRGB gamut."

Also when considering a purchase note that the G750s support both AC wifi and Intel's Thunderbolt. Both were important to me as I have Apple's new AC Airport Extreme and a 27 inch Thunderbolt monitor; your mileage may vary.
For the $450 (Amazon) difference in price over the JW the JX offers a higher quality screen w/ 3D support, 4 GB more RAM, a 256GB SSD, a larger (but slower) HDD, and the nVidia 770 w/ 3GB instead of the 765 w/ 2GB; to me the added value was worth the higher price of admission, but I did not want to go another $600 to top out with the nVidia 780 model.
One downside: the days when ASUS supplied a nice backpack, gaming mouse, and Windows Install disk with the ROG G7xx machines are past, sadly. -

Yes a 3D panel and non 3d panel will be different models and will have different performance.
You should be able to burn your own backup DVD or best of all a fresh windows 8 copy to do a fresh install
For those of you that bought the g750...any regrets?
