Looking to see if anyone else tries this first. I don't have any issues with the Creative Software, but it's nice to have alternatives, just in case.

This program looks promising, but it Reminds me of something I heard when I was a freshman in college pledging my fraternity. I sat across a bar booth from one of the senior members of the fraternity. He looked me in the eye and said, "pledge, do you know what the best beer in the world is?" I leaned toward him eagerly anticipating this knowledge he was about to impart. "No, what is it?" I replied. "Free beer" he whispered back to me.

PROTIP: If you want to use this plug-in, you need to reconfigure the default settings. Right-click on the app, and select Settings. On the OUTPUT line, you'll see a box with KS. This stands for Kernel Streaming, and if you use this output on "Speakers" output, you'll bypass the subwoofer. Change the output to "DS" for DirectSound, and then select "Speakers" output. You'll have no problem noticing the difference.

Personally, I didn't care for the plugin myself, as I use Foobar2000 with it's ReplayGain controls, and the bass boosting tabs just aren't as effective as the Creative addon. But at least this one can be configured to work, as opposed to the SRS solutions.

Will this allow for 5.1 optical audio output? Or is that still not possible...

I tried this package and it seems to work just fine. I will say that the sound is improved with this utility. I noticed no lag or oddities with it except one. I had no sound upon entering windows. It appeared that the sound only started working after I was logged in and the software started. This bothered me greatly. I want to hear the jingle at the boot screen and then again when I log in. It's probably no big deal to most folks, but it bugged the crap out of me.

I tested it and found it's good to use :) . The audio quality is more detailed when using it. One thing that I've noticed is that when you set the volume to higher values, I can still hear the cackling sound from the subwoofer :(

You can't add more detail that's not there, that's impossible.

How do you explain watching TV on different quality screens (Plasma, LCD, LED)? The detail is there, just doesn't show up as well on one, as it does the other. Why do some speakers sound "more detailed" than others (Altec Lansing VS Bose)?

Simple: There isn't any TV ever made that adds detail or increase quality that isn't there before. If the TV is terrible and doesn't show the details that is already present from your cable feed, satellite, DVD/BLuRay, that's a different story. Anything that hypes to increase quality for both audio and visual media is simply BS and wrong.

If you want higher quality audio, get a better DAC that can convert the digital feed into analog cleaner and better. But that doesn't increase quality... nothing does. The quality of the mp3, .wav, or any audio file remains the same.

Equalizers and sound effects are bs? Since when? Just because it's some sound distortion/modification that makes sounds sharper, clearer or whatever ... doesn't mean it doesn't work.

no, he sounds like an audiophile. I don't care how much software you throw at a machine, you're still playing digital files across mediocre speakers with a laughable slightly larger speaker that's marketed as a "subwoofer". Your software may augment the sound coming out of your speakers, but a 112Kb mp3 is still a 112Kb mp3, and no amount of software is going to magically make it sound like it's 320Kb counterpart[I won't even go into lossless].

As far as equalization is concerned, that's a smoke and mirrors trick [this is only my personal opinion here] to make inferior audio equipment sound ever so slightly less suck. It's never going to match the quality of a high end signal going through a high end amplifier to a set of high end speakers.

Don't get me wrong here: While I personally won't try or buy this software, I'm familiar enough [at least with creative's software] to know that such software can have great benefit to the casual user and can enhance viewer/listener experience. Once you've really HEARD the difference between that software and a nice high end setup, however, it's REALLY hard to settle.

That right there makes your post off key....granted...im not here to argue...but if you and rukus won't try it and see how it enhances your computer audio anything you post in this topic is irrelivant.Give it a try......I personally have used many enhancers over the years but this one tops the cake....otherwise I would never of posted it... :)

The Realtek codec is doing it too...it's hardwired to be "tuned" to match the attached speakers.

It’s a wee bit old news as you can see from the above quote but I am glad that others have found it helpful too. I have been using this gem for a long time now. Completely getting rid of all my sound issues.
It was, and still is, the only cure for the horrid “intermittent screeching white noise” I had on my rig. And I still dont know how or why it cured it but but..........................woooooooot !!! (",) This machine is running like a bat out of hell with no probs whatsoever since.

    Best wishes for 2011 everybody.

    Take care and be Good

That's not increasing quality of the audio nor is it adding more detail. That's just increasing certain frequencies which I don't do anyhow. All that means is you can hear certain frequencies better, but at the sacrifice of others.

Messing with EQ and then claiming it's better quality is pure BS.

I don't care if someone likes their music with post processing. But don't tell others that the audio has been improved, increased in quality and detail, that's simply wrong.

But I agree with mindinversion. Investing any money to "improve" the sound on these laptops speakers and .5 inch subwoofer seems ludicrous to me. Spend that money on a decent pair of headphones and your problem is solved and won't need to mess with post processing.

The app is doing a form of normalization, so that all the audio you play is equally loud. It's also doing some waveform shaping to correct errors in the digitally compressed audio forms. On foobar2000, we call that ReplayGain and Dithering. :) The white noise you got occasionally is from a combo of the poor mastering of the engineers these days pushing for a louder sound, bringing the waveform close to max peak, giving no headroom for dynamics. Therefore, after being amped by your sound system, the poor speakers may be forced to clip, or the waveform errors, and you get clipped.

I bet beforehand the problem went away when you lowered the volume.

there are digital refinement that can help to eliminate the distorted sound and "smoothen" the digital curves. this is the difference between a cheap mp3 player and a kenwood mp3 player (was gonna buy a limited edition one but it was only available in japan)
they help, believe it or not
I have not tried this program but it appears it is doing similar thing as I have just mentioned.
