So I have an SSD and I tweaked it with all the tweaks there could be found on this forum. To make a long story short, I've found a file, called pagefile.sys, and its hidden on the OS drive. It acts like virtual memory when the RAM is all used up, or in some cases it doesnt even require for the RAM to be intirely full, it just gets used.

Keeping in mind that I have 8GB of ram, I'm considering of shrinking the filesize to 2GB.
Any thoughts on this are welcome ;).

ps: here's a small guide on how to do so, if you wanne give it a go.

HI, nice system u have BTW. You can always disable page file by going to computer>properties>advanced system settings>performance settings.
8gb is more than enough, so what you are thinking is very smart!
    GOOD LUCK!

Set it to a fixed ammount, do not disable it entirely. Even though 8GB ram is enough for most daily operations, there are certain programs/windows programs that require the existance of pagefile.

Pagefile disabled on a total of 6 systems (2 xp, 4 W7) You can turn off:

Pagefile, Hibernation & System restore. Also remove Windows components you don't need

Move the pagefile to your 500 GB HDD...

That would cause some slowdowns compared to putting it on the SSD

Just make it 1-2GB fixed size. Some programs require it to run efficiently or at all (Photoshop is the only example I can think of other than Virtual Machines).

    Wow great input here :D

    @frosty
Its funny, I changed the numbers to 1gb-2gb when I posted this thread to see what effect it had on my system :p

One more thing, do you guys think it has any effect to make it a static amount like 2GB instead of variable between 1 and 2GB?

Make it static to, let's say, 1GB
If you get errors like "virtual memory too low" you will know that you have to increase that value.
Also, if you activate hibernate, you will "lose" another 8GB of precious ssd space
or whatever quantity of memory you may have in the system

Yah, disableing the hibernation is one of the tweaks for the ssd. Thanks however for reminding us ;).

PLF is SPOT on! Did this on mine and do have not heard the 500 Gb HDD spin up during normal usage (gaming, surfing, email etc). The only time I hear it is when I access files i have stored on D.

That lifehacker article was absolutely correct. The average user should NEVER EVER EVER change the default settings of windows. If you can't troubleshoot it, or can't fix it when it breaks, DON'T MESS WITH IT!

The other thing to note is that, by itself, you probably won't see much if any performance increase JUST by disabling the pagefile. If you go through and super-tune windows [disabling as many "not relevant" services as you can, performance tweaking registry, etc] There ARE performance gains to be had, but for most people it's really not worth the trouble for the gain.

Unless, of course, you're OCD about scavenging every last ounce of resource from your machine .. not that *I* know anyone like that. . .

If you want to save more then try running this command to set the shadow copy service to only use 6GB, enough for half a dozen or so system restore points:

    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=6GB
