Hi all, as stated, I currently (still) use an ASUS G1S, with a 8600M GT card. I've read a lot about the GPU dying for people with G1S and I've experienced somewhat similar problems when it comes to booting up the laptop.

I do get a black screen at start up, but I still get the opening kaboom and I've been able to boot up fully after many repeated tries of holding power off and on.

I'm always still able to play computer games like World of Warcraft without any obvious graphics defect.

However, when I booted up my G1S again today, after 3 tries, it doesn't detect my 8600M GT card and so all my graphics settings are at the lowest.

So its lead me to wonder if my problem is with the GPU like many others or maybe its something less severe, which I hope for :( since I don't have the funds to replace my laptop.

An 8600M GT :) amazing it is still working at all. The problem with the 8600 and 8700 (which I had) was the poor solder that was used on the GPU. This meant that problems occured similar to what you are seeing when it got hot and then cooled down it would crack and so it would only work every now and then and eventually die. To make sure it is the GPU do try it on an external screen before replacing it. You could also try baking the card however I cannot advise you on that but it is done to reheat the solder and fix the problem temporarily.

Sadly your only option might be to replace it unless you can find a cheap 8600 about, you will certainly see the benefit compared to that old card by upgrading to a newer model :D

Oh I found out the real problem. Seems it was something to do with my GPU or the MOBO. Had to reset the bios holding down the start button and now everything's working fine again :D Such a relief that I won't have to replace the whole laptop and yeah its also quite amazing that my 8600 lasted as long as it did since I bought it in early 2008.
