Heres my story ;) Bought a Asus G1S a little over two years ago in GA. I paid roughly 1600$ for the notebook. Computer is great and has been my main work computer. I run an online commerce store from home and the computer has been great. About two months ago I was browsing the web and my screen went black. Tried every thing in the book and couldnt get the screen to come back on. Did some research and the G1S had a manufacturing flaw with the 8600m nvidia chips over heating and prematurely dying.

I RMAd the computer to ASUS and they confirmed it was the gpu and replaced the motherboard with ANOTHER G1S board with a 8600m at no cost even tho i am out of warranty. I didnt really like this but the techs on the phone assured me that the replaced motherboard was an "upgraded" model and did not share the manufacturing flaw that plagued these computers. I agreed to take it back and they sent it back to me.

When i got the computer back i had 4 keys falling off the keypad and the battery would not stay locked in place. I was told to RMA it again. I didnt RMA it for those issues and fixed them myself. Two weeks later i was processing some orders on the computer and the screen goes black. Again. Computer boots up and i hear windows starting sound but the screen is pure black. Back light is on but the GPU is dead.

I ship the Computer back to Asus with a letter stating i do not want another faulty G1S motherboard placed in my computer and i expect a non-faulty motherboard or a refurbished replacement laptop. At first the tech on the phone states that since i am out of warranty that any repairs will have to be paid for. I mention consumer protection laws and the faulty Nvidia chips and he reverses and states any repairs will be covered by Asus.

At this point im waiting for Asus to check the computer in and give me an update on my computer. I am going to refuse any replacement parts that contain a 8600m chip. Its great they didn't charge me on the first RMA but they replaced it with another faulty chip that died in a couple of weeks and in my mind that is a bad business practice.

What else can i do to assure that i get a replacement that will not randomly die and ill have to RMA again? I read that people get replacement motherboards that dont contain a faulty chip or they get a replacement refurbished laptop. What can i do to be one of these lucky people?

Not sure since it's such an old issue. But you may be able to get a refund, and then buy a similar laptop, like maybe a G50 with GTX 260M. If you spend just a few minutes you can find a thread about this. Look for the G1 replacement GPU threads.

I know Nvidia recently settled and paid Asus for this debacle since this was Nvidia's fault.

Check out the nvidia defect forums. I have an ongoing thread there and on the asus gpu forums. The guys are nvidia defect are great. Ive spent about 5 hours on the phone so far with Asus tech support. They are doing their best to try and replace my 2nd faulty gpu with another faulty 8600 gpu.

Rat. I would contact Asus for a RMA number. If you are out of warranty which i am assuming every G1S owner is they should repair it for free. The thing is they will repair it with another 8600 with will ultimately fail again. If it be 6 days like mine or another year. It will fail.

If you pursue it enough it is possible to get a replacement notebook that is not faulty. Many people have gotten replacements. If you dont push hard enough they will keep telling you all they can do is repair it with the original parts. Again check out nvidia defect forums if you are serious about trying to get a replacement.

Im to the point where i have contacted an attorney to see what my rights are as a consumer. I have contacted multiple asus departments and multiple
supervisors. I am on my last resort now with a sup putting in a request for replacement but he states its highly unlikely. I have sent legal and notice of action papers to Asus HQ in Cali. Good luck. I hope we both get what we want. A working computer. =-p

I am right there with you. I know of the problem, as I am a D_ll Tech Support Specialist. D_ll has replaced so many Motherboards for NVIDIA failures, that there is a special column in the service request form for it. They were part of the massive class-action lawsuit against NVIDIA, and won in December.

My G1s-a was great for 2 years and 5 months, then black screen of death, no warnings, just dead. No video on internal monitor or external monitor. I could hear the splash screen but nothing else. It just shut down after that. I sent it back and they replaced the Motherboard without charge (I paid shipping there though). That fix last all of 4.5 months and now I have another dead screen no boot paperweight. I have called today and get the royal runaround, and a supposed escalation callback (that probably won't happen), and I am a bit P1$$ed.

I did find a guy on Ebay that will repair the MB and install a copper heatsink below the GPU to dissipate the excessive heat (which was an original bad comment of the system from all reviews prior to buying). After the repair is made he only guarantees for 30 days, so that's not much consolation for a $165 repair.

NVIDIA made the defective chips and sold them to the world as the latest greatest thing, and I am stuck like so many others with an unusable piece of plastic. The ironic thing is, I purchase this great laptop upon reviews from a software manufacturer of 3D jewelry design that this was a great system, with fully upgradeable video processor. How wrong they were. The Dell Precision Workstations do have removable & replaceable graphics cards on the top of the line systems. Someday I'll get one of those; but never again an ASUS or NVIDIA product.

Tomorrow I go into high gear and escalate to the Tennessee State Attorney's General with a complaint.

I even call Newegg, who I purchased from and they declined to help. I cannot blame them. They just sold what I bought; ASUS manufactured the laptop, and NVIDIA supplied the defective chip. I know D_ll has offered anyone who has the defective MB's a replacement as need be (but they are refurbs and not equipped with newer versions of the GPU).
