Received the shipping notification and tracking number this morning. It's shipping from Asus Canada in Ontario via a company I've never heard of (PTSI), whose coverage area doesn't include BC, and whose website doesn't seem to have any tracking capability.
They also sent a packing list, with the notebook denoted as "AS G50V COP7450/3BG7/4G/US".
All up, while Asus hasn't broken any speed records dealing with my G1S, they certainly haven't dragged their heels either. Asus is shipping out the G50V two weeks to the day since I shipped out the G1S, and I could probably have reduced that interval by a couple of days if I'd been willing to pay an extra $20 for two-day shipping
I expect the G50V will arrive late this week or (more likely) early next week, and will provide impressions when it arrives. I don't know whether or not it's refurbished, but I expect it probably is.

It will most likely be refurb, which is fine. Some are done better than others, but I've heard good things. Everything but the stickers where shiny and new on mine.
You'll probably be really happy about the better cooling and video card, and pretty unhappy with the monitor. That's how I was anyway =p
good luck! -
Also I have a question for you about your overclock; do you use "ics9lpr604aglf"? -
nope, I'm using ics9lpr363dglf with setfsb
-
For me, ics9lpr363dglf gives me the right FSB, but wrong memory frequency, and the reverse is true with the ics9lpr604aglf. Anyone else have this issue? -
hmm i didn't notice that. check out clutch or tevs guide, it should have the right info. It's been OC'ing fine for me, but maybe I could get more if i switched to a more accurate one.
-
Well, that was quick. FedEx turned up to deliver the laptop today (same tracking number), but no-one was home, darn it. So I'll have to wait till Monday for my new G50VT.
To those who are having trouble getting Asus to acknowledge the issue, the only advice I can give is to make it clear that you know this is a widespread problem, and you know that others are being offered replacements. Be polite (always!), but don't let them put you off. -

All right. Last night was the first night spent in the company of my new G50VT-X5. Some early impressions:
- It's refurbished. I guess this one was dropped on its front right corner and replaced via the Accidental Damage Warranty, because the paint and metal on that corner (of the lower half) is dinged, and the metal is lifting slightly. Annoying, but I'll let it pass.
- The screen is OK from straight on, but is REALLY sensitive to vertical viewing angle. It looks pretty awful when viewed only slightly from above or below dead-center. Side-side viewing angles are OK.
- I installed Windows 7x64 and got all the non-ridiculous ASUS utilities running, so I have the OLED and the touch buttons functional. I like these a lot better than the G1S versions.
- The 768-pixel high screen makes for very cramped viewing of sites like Gmail and Google Reader. Windows doesn't allow you to reduce the base DPI size below 100%, which is irritating.
I haven't gotten around to any games or other performance checks, but apart from the ding and the screen, I'm otherwise satisfied with the replacement. -
Hey guys, when you have gotten your replacements, have you all had to deliver in your original G1Ss? I would expect so for them to have to "check what the problem is", even though it is pretty obvious by now what most G1Ss are falling apart from. If you call in telling them about your problem is, will they offer a replacement for $250 without seeing the laptop?
-
No, you'll need to send it in, so they can at least go through the motions of "diagnosis and repair". They may also want them back so they can strong-arm NVidia into helping them cover the costs of the defect which is, after all, a GPU failure. -
Damn, I was worried about that. The problem is, I am not currently living in the US. I can however have a friend bring it over after christmas. From what Ive heard customer support for ASUS is the best in the US. Odd question: Has anyone had experience with ASUS customer support (even for the G1S) in Norway or the Czech Republic?

Hi:
Asus replaced my "black screen" g2s motherboard one year ago and now I got the same problem. Unfortunately my laptop is out of warranty, but I told Asus they were fully aware of the 6800 problem when they repair it last time, so they intentionally gave me a defective problem during the warranty period.
I mentioned your case and they agreed to consider the case, but they are asking me for a copy of your original email offering the G50VT replacement. Could you please send it to me?
Thanks a lot!

No problem, but you need to send me a private message with your e-mail address. I tried to PM you, but apparently your account does not allow receipt of PMs.

Apparently my profile doesn't have privileges to access PM. I added you to my buddy list, enabled the vcard download and set my trash email address and msn messenger id. Thanks! -
reading such thread again scares the c**p out of me...my G1S still works fine... would I get a replacement out of my warranty out of US ? I bought mine from newegg 2 years ago, it says I have global warranty but it's over
-
OK, have forwarded the e-mail to your hotmail account. Let me know if it doesn't come through.

Thank you in advance. -
Hi all,
Its hard to read this post as my G1s died on me yesterday.
Symptoms?? black screen, sound fine, HDD fine.
After hooking up external screen all is the same, so most probably NV 8600m GT is gone. It lasted for 30 months (24 on warranty).....
So, since yesterday I have been in contact with ASUS service in UK and Poland. I also mentioned the case of exchanging g1s for a different model instead of repairing the GPU ( I could do it on my own anyway)
I will keep you posted and I would appreciate any help.
Thx -
sooo...
after extensive contacts with asus service in UK and PL bad news for me and my G1s.
They are only willing to provide post warranty repair with me covering all cost. Do you guys have any advice on where and for how much can I purchase a GF 8600m gt and if it is worth it?? I really cannot spend any $$ on a new lappy, not before the new year.
THX -
Phh, this sucks sooooo much! My G2S died a couple of weeks ago. 3 years old. Crappy ! I assume I won't have a chance to get it replaced or anything like that?
