I'm on the same boat. I sent my g1s recently. According to fedex it was delivered 3 days ago. My gpu wasnt dead yet but i decided to rma it before new semester starts. As a computer science student I need more reliable model. I hope i will get g50 replacement like most of people in this thread.
Temps on my gpu were as high as 111 C which is ridiculous. I'm out of warranty but it shouldnt be a problem since theres nothing wrong with my g1s other then inherently defective gpu. Plus the condition of my laptop is really good. It looks like new.
I sent it to Jeffersonville, IN
-
Yeah, those temps are way high. While doing everyday stuff (word processing, surfing web, nothing too GPU intensive), the GPU in my G50VT generally does not exceed 60 C, even without my Zalman cooler underneath it. Like I noted in a post above, I find it handy to use the GPU Monitor sidebar gadget in conjunction with RivaTuner. -
-
Once i noticed ridiculous temps like 110 C i knew something was wrong. First i was convinced its poor cooling design but after some research the issue became apparent. I gathered so much information about 8600m gt there no way i will let them replace it with another faulty chip. Even if it means talking with Asus ceo. -
I'm determined to to do whatever needs to be done in order to replace this "ticking bomb"with something more reliable before new semester starts. Cant deal with GPU failure in middle of some project.

Was just reading this thread when I came across this post.

One of the users quoted it before it was deleted. Interesting. I guess asus reps arent allowed to publicly admit to this issue. Looks like it slipped away.
I find it rather intriguing. -
As I said before - BYE BYE Asus.
The thing that defines an individual (or in this case - a company) is not whether or not they make mistakes; it's what they do AFTER the that fact that says everything you need to know about them!
.... ok Asus, so you got a bad GPU from nVidia, fine. Suck it up and don't leave the consumer (the ones that KEEP you in business) on the hook for YOUR self induced problems.
I WILL NOT EVER buy ASUS AGAIN! (Sorry Henry, your a good guy, but your company is screwing with your future too.)
I just ordered another SAGER! Their new NP5125 - Looking forward to testing it. Should be here in about a week or so.
I have run them before and they really are quite impressive. I highly recommend SAGER to all.
Asus may have packed in what appears to be value, but after you go through this - ASUS IS NOT WORTH IT AT ALL!!!!!
As I said before, if they actually resolve this situation, I'll retract what I have said - but I am not holding my breath.
BYE BYE ASUS. Taking My $$$ and All my recommendations elsewhere.
ASUS, you have lost MUCH MORE than One future sale with this cat!

RMA Number:
N-CAA1061908 -
Update: It has been 7 days since they got my laptop and its still not even in system. I called every other working day. So far nothing. Wonder how long its gonna take before they actually start working on it.

4 months after my warranty expired I went to turn it on and like the rest of you, no screen activity.
I sent an email to tech support and received this:
"Please test your laptop with an external monitor, if it works fine, it's probably the monitor connection is loose.
If it displays the same, first, please uninstall then reinstall Graphics Driver for a try. If still, it's probably your VGA card is damaged."
Well seeing as how the first one didn't and the second was out of the question in its current state I started the RMA process.
First call I made the guy I talked to just kept telling me, "Well your laptop is over 2 years old." When I brought up that this is a known issue he continually said he could locate no known issue in regards to this. No matter what I said that was the response I received and finally I asked to speak to a supervisor. He put me on hold for a minute or two and finally returned and said the supervisor was busy with another call and asked if he could call me back. So I said yes and of course received no call back.
The next day I called and talked to another rep and filled her in and said I could provide information stating this is a known issue. After a brief hold, she sent me an RMA number. I informed the representative that I would not be sending the unit in with the hard drive. She did not say it needed to be included to deal with this issue. I sent it in on Friday (8/13/2010) and received delivery confirmation on Tuesday (8/17/2010.) So now I guess it’s a waiting game to see when and what they are going to do with it. If the issue has been resolved with the GFX card I would rather get my old unit back.
If I had been informed previously that this was an issue that would result in my computer becoming unusable through normal use I would have returned it for repair under warranty. I hope this isn’t as trying of a process that some of you have had, I really have enjoyed ASUS and have purchased other products as well as recommended them to co-workers. However, my future involvement with them could hinge on how well this process goes. -

I'm in the US. I'm willing to do what I need to in order to get this done right. I just read this article:
Nvidia's GPU Material Defect Cost $475.9 Million
If they have shelled out that type of money to fix the problem chips, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that my computer should be fixed, whether I am in warranty or not.
I think I'll call tomorrow and see if they have an update to give me.
P. S. I shipped mine to the Jeffersonville, Indiana facility -
I had a HP computer, it was a dv6000 series laptop which had a defective Nvidia chip on it. I have a lot of experience with these computers and there is a way to fix it.
I would 1st try and get Asus to fix it for free. It took me a total of 3 months to get my DV6000 repair, it was 2 years out of warranty. My argument was, it came defective out of the factory since it had an Nvidia chipset.
I took it all the way up to corporate, I about it enough and walla, they fixed it for free.
I see no reason why Asus couldn't do the same, all you have to do is be patient and tell them they sold you a defective laptop.
or
You can fix it, there is a fix, it works 7 out of 10 laptops that have a defective Nvidia chip. But it requires taking out the motherboard, super heating the motherboard with a heatgun. Sounds hard but its really not, the fix should only take 6 minutes. I've done it on multiple laptops ranging from Nvidia 6150 to 8600 GPUs.
YouTube - HP DV2000 Video Card Repair! - HPLies.com -
Had the exact same problem, I switched out the hard drive, and now it works. Last hard drive was failing and kept on loosing data, and it happened something to do with Grub so I could no longer boot into either partition, so I did away with the spinning platter and got myself an SSD drive and did a clean Win 7 Ultimate install, works now.
P.S mine is a Asus G50vt-x1. -
I had to wait around a week before they even put my g1s is system.
Keep us posted ..lets see if they gonna threat both of us the same. Good luck. -
Just received email from asus saying that they are shipping my g1s back. I'm very disappointed. After half of dozen emails/calls they didnt even try to contact me at all. I provided them with all the necessary information and they failed to communicate with me. What kind of company is it? They dont communicate with customers at all. This is ridiculous. I will wait for my laptop to come back and seek legal advice. Good thing my brother is a lawyer. Action law suit here i come.
-
I just got off the phone with a rep and he said my status was updated to "in service" or a like. He said this phase takes 48 to 72 hours. So based on this I am getting a repair instead of a replacement. I just hope I don't get the same faulty board and GFX chip combo.
Let me know what route you decide to go in terms of a suit/ small claims filing, because if this comes back with the same problem then I see myself looking into similar action. -
Thats what they told me over the phone as well. Next thing they just gonna send your laptop back without any kind of communication and customer service wont be able to provide you with any information in regards to what has been done to your comp.
Did your 8600m GT burn down or did you send it to prevent it from burning? I'm gonna have to wait for mt g1s before i start any action. Maybe they figured out a way to fix this and we are not aware of this. -
Mine was working fine one minute and then out the next. A couple of days hoping it would correct yielded no results.
I just checked my RMA number on the website and this popped up:
"System can't find records of your inquiry."
I would like to know what they did to "fix" it because if all they did was the process similar to YouTube videos of heating the board and card, it is a bandage on the problem and will fail again with use.
This whole process has kinda left me frustrated with ASUS. I still feel they offer a superior product, but now I find myself praying that it doesn't fail, because the repair process is less than streamlined. -
My guess is that they just got a shipment with G1s motherboards. I would expect them to do the same with your laptop. Not sure what to think yet. Need to see what kind of GPU is n this ,mobo and what temps they are on gpu under full load. -
I just got mine replaced with a G51. Don't even mention replacement to the phone support techs, they can't do anything, but once you get the quote hold your ground and you may be able to still get a replacement.
-
Which facility did you send it in? and did you have to pay 250$ for this replacement? -
Yes, I had to pay the $250 fee.
Mine went in to the Fremont facility, it was ~1 year out of warranty. I included in my note to the tech that I knew about the 8600's problems and that I'd dealt with them before, so maybe that was part of the reason she contacted me.

Hey guys.
SO i received my laptop back. There was no sheet attached to the box or anything inside. It looks like there was nothing done with my laptop at all. That would explain lack of any documentation.
I just tested my GPU temperatures using both GPU-Z.0.3.8 and Speedfan.
After 10 minutes of gaming GPU reached 110C. Idle temp on GPU is 85C.
From the looks of it. They didnt even bother to apply thermal paste. I really dont know what to say. It took them a month to do completely NOTHING.
I was probably unlucky and got the worse tech ever. Two words.
Incompetence !
Disappointment !
I called rep the same moment i realized there was nothing done to my g1s. All he could do is to give me another RMA. This time in Fermont headquarters.
Oh man. Gotta love Asus Rma. -
After having my machine for a week and being told by a service rep that it was being fixed, I received this email:
"We apologize for the delay in service and the inconvenience this may have caused you. Due to the non-availability of the replacement parts and the unit being an end-of-life product, we would like to return the unit unrepaired. To date, no estimated time of arrival for the replacement part and due to storage related issues, we cannot hold the unit for a longer period of time. Thank you for patience and understanding.
Thank you for choosing ASUS products."
Needless to say I am not happy. Anyone have thoughts or ideas on where to go from here? Has anyone gone the small-claims route? -
At least tech dealing with you had the balls to write you an email. What you should do is ask politely for G50 replacement. If that doesnt work send it to Fermont.
-
Has anyone here taken Asus to Small Claims court? The guys with the HP laptops (check hplies.com) do it with HP and the Nvidia defect all the time...and HP usually comes back with an out of court settlement. Why would the case be different against ASUS?
-
... I can't believe that I'm having the same issue like this... almost exactly 1 year out of warranty, my g1s-a1 decided to take a sh!t... I contacted Asus and said if it is the nvidia GPU, they want 320 to repair it... I said no, I'm going ot contact a lawyer and the class action lawsuit going on with nvidia and bring Asus into the courtroom if they can't justify this problem.
I found a link where you can contact the lawyers for the nvidia lawsuit.
NVIDIA Class Action | Milberg LLP
just join up and tell them you have problems and its an Asus.
I am awaiting replies from both sides, lets hope this will be good. Hate spending money for a lemon. -
I just received words that since it is out of warranty, Asus wants $350 to repair the motherboard (if it is the GPU problem)... Quite frankly, I believe nVidia should be paying for this, not me.
Any further advice guys? -
For those out of warranty :
Not much in the way of advice, but if your laptop uses the ASUS reversed MXM format, you can upgrade to other cards, such as the 9650M GT 1GB or better (once the appear on ebay). I use a 9650M GT (1GB) on my old A8JS (replaced Go 7700), and it works fine!
I am over at bios-mods.com (check the 'option mods requests' page), or just send me a PM, and I may well be able to help with the BIOS mods needed for upgrades. Otherwise, search for your GPU on ebay, you should get one cheaper than ASUS quote. and get good thermal paste (I use arctic silver 5), and my GPU idles at 33-39 degrees C, maxes out at 60-62 degrees! -
I just don't get Asus. I tell them the problem, I am willing to work something out if they want to trade for another unit because i dont want the same defective unit. I ask to see if I can contact nVidia and have them pay for the repairs and all I get is "your laptop is out of warranty .. blah blah blah.."
If Asus G1s-A1 are dealt with case-by-case, shouldn't the defective GPU kinda void that warranty status anyway because they sold me a defecive unit?
Just wondering... I might move this up to small claims court, but I don't even know its even worth it..
All I know is with all the Asus products I have here, this laptop sure seals the deal of not buying any more crap from Asus. Customer satisfaction definitely not satisfied. -
nvidia settled a class action for faulty 8600m chips. Here is the site The NVIDIA GPU Litigation - Home Page, BUT Asus is not on the list.
Also Asus seems to have TOTALLY removed the notebook forum from their site.
Coincidence?, mavbe, maybe not.
You have to commend asus for being a "fine" up standing corporate citizen. -
i live in canada, my g1s was out of warranty. I called the service center to get it fixed on their dime, they said it was not their problem. after mailing a letter threatening to sue, i got a call the next day saying that they would fix it for free. they would not budge about giving a replacement lappy or another type of mobo. they say it is a "redesigned" mobo and will work fine and that they used it in more than 1000 asus g1s laptops. i just got it back today ( i sent it in last week). i will run some tests. but i talked to someone with the same issue and the same replacement mobo, he claims it is way cooler and running fine 6 months in. hope this helps someone. i do not blame asus for the defect however i do blame them for the poor service in response to the problem. i hope someone does sue them.
regards -
I have a G1s with the Nvidia defect GPU 8600m GT and I went after ASUS and finally got them to give me a replacement laptop. (G50V-X1). Most of my info is on the nvidiadefect forum.
The Nvidia Defect Forum • View topic - G1s failed 8600m gt replacement board
It also has a picture of the "new reworked gpu" however no one is coming forth to say what exactly was done to make this better.
Keep after them. Be patient, fare, and honest in pursuing them and you should get some satisfaction.

I too own a Asus G1s, I did not realize the problem was so prelevant among it's owners. I've had mine close to launch so it's definately out of warranty. I'm located in Canada. Whats the first step to claiming a new replacement laptop (i don't want another g1s)
edit: I should know my retailer is now out of business (small local guy) So pursuing him is not an option. -
Contact asus, tell them you've got one of their faulty laptops. Take it from there.

My G1S-B1's video started fritzing out six weeks ago. First it spat out garbage characters- then grey screen of death. I was exactly one year past my two year warranty.
Asus Jeffersonville (Indiana) replaced the M/B at no charge. Turnaround was about two weeks from the RMA issue. Yes, the replacement still has the G84M (Nvidia 8600m GT) that's prone to failure. But if I get another two years I'll be satisfied. I buy notebooks at five year intervals.
But I was really surprised that they fixed it at n/c. Will keep thread posted of the replacement's longevity. (this is the second M/B replacement- first was for faulty audio) -

Backstory:
I bought an ASUS G1S from Best Buy in October of 2007, it died by late October 2008. ASUS would do nothing for me since the warranty at Best Buy was only a 1 year warranty to push replacement plans on customers while all other dealers came with a 2 year warranty.
Currently:
I recently bought a new motherboard for the unit for about $350. I am thinking of filing a claim in small claims here for the amount, my skilled labor in replacing it and the cost of filing the claim. -
Glad to see that this thread is still somewhat active. I hate to say this but I thought my G1S would be one of those that escaped the curse of the dreaded black screen...until this morning. I called ASUS support today and am waiting for my RMA to be issued. My laptop is about 2 years past the warranty period and from what I can tell in these recent posts that ASUS has been replacing the motherboards at no charge or offering up a replacement laptop. Is ASUS still doing this or do you think I would have to shell out some money to get it fixed? I would REALLY hate to spend a lot of money just to get the same defective product.
-
My G1S just died...after 3-4 years of running fine (after I made it a custom fan for the GPU). It was running fine until this morning when it just went black screen, after restart just stays gray, no bios or w/e image on the screen.
Anyone could sum these 34 pages, is it possible to RMA or should I buy a new mobo ?
Btw, I'm in Bulgaria and bought my Asus from US back in 2008, there's no way I can send it in US ;(
Edit: Nevermind, I just fixed it, working like a charm now. Here is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJI9mSEe-1U
Hot air (soldering station or hot air pistol) 200C for 1 minute, 300-340C for about 2 minutes, wait to cool down, repeat one more time the same procedure. -
Hardwarejunkie -- Don't expect anything from ASUS.
After a long fight with them the best that came of it was them replacing the motherboard with the same defective crap - AT MY COST.
Yep, I had to cover it myself even after the fact that they knew they had a problem due to the solder that was used and they had been compensated by nvidia for it, and didn't pass that on to the people that keep them in business . . . US.
Since then, I have purchased 6 Sager Machines (both personal and business) and have given at least 2-3 other recommendations AGAINST using ASUS.
ASUS has lost a lot of business from me because of their refusal to accept responsibility for their mistakes and I will continue to warn people away.
ARE YOU LISTENING ASUS? My RMA Number was N-CAA1061908
If they ever do decide to accept responsibility for a crappy design then I shall update you here.
I've said my piece - you have been warned.
If anyone is curious, I have been running Sager:
NP5125's
NP5135's
NP8150's (my current favorite)
and NP5796's
Outstanding machines.
AGAIN, AVOID ASUS UNTIL THEY LEARN TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE TECHNOLOGICAL BLUNDERS THAT THEY GET COMPENSATED FOR BUT DON'T PASS ON TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.
Here it is again ASUS My RMA Number was N-CAA1061908
If you (Asus) fix this, I'll make sure that I let the world knows here, and then - AND ONLY THEN will I consider your product again . . . and I purchase a LOT of machines! -
I am a late comer to this thread, (it is now 2015 & the last post was 2012) but was happy to see the info, I've had a G1S-B1 with the 8600M GT video card since 2007. Bought it from NewEgg for my son to go to college with. He began having issues in 2010-11, that I thought was the hard drive. The machine has ran hot for a long time. I replaced the original 200 gig with a 500 Seagate. That appeared to fail a year or two ago, so I put in a Seagate Momentus 750 hybrid drive. For the past year it has worked well with that, I've made sure to keep it on a laptop cooler. Well its starting to flake out on me like it did before when I replaced the previous 2 hard drives. Like before, no video & the fan blowing hot as hell. My suspicions turned to the GPU, I checked the Device Manager and Windows confirmed a problem with it. Don't think I had that before in device manager but maybe i never noticed or when it went haywire before I couldn't access device mgr. to see it. From what I have read about the class action suit against Nvidia and everyone else's experience with the G1S I'm guessing that was the core problem all along. I paid too much for this in 2007 which is why I have fiddled with it it for so long. Is there such a thing as an eGPU / express card video card that might work with this, and wondering what the cost for that would be.
-
It's completely obsolete.. it's plain stupid to throw any more money at this.. get a new laptop..
